Bees, now a WSU piano professor, was then a doctoral student at the University of Colorado. In the past few years Taylor has emerged as one of the nation’s foremost young musicians. Audiences and critics alike hail the intensity and artistry he brings to the works of masters ranging from Bach and Beethoven to Boulez and Bolcom. The Washington Post, for instance, deems Taylor "one of the most impressive young pianists on the horizon today." Last week in San Francisco, at the mere cost of an old email address (employed so that the publisher couldn't easily find my current one), I became the proud owner of The Pen Commandments: A Guide for the Beginning Writer . As Quill and Scroll says, Steven Frank has written a "highly readable book that entertains as it instructs. . . . Even veteran writers will find a new perspective on the whole writing venture. . . . Almost anyone will find the book a delightful, useful tool for writing well." Well, with such a pointedly elliptical recommendation, how could Styles resist: I mean, with so punny a take on a truly biblical theme, Frank's The Pen Commandments seemed even naturally to commend itself to me. "The breath, prayers and libido of the fingertips must somehow be transferred to the neutral indifference of the key," Sherman writes, in this astonishingly quotable book; every page drops a golden prose apple. Fingers arc like "a team of wild huskies." The thumb is "the black sheep who is forbidden to roam on the black keys." The piano offers "rare aphrodisiacs of sound." A renowned classical pianist who teaches at the New England Conservatory of Music, Sherman comes at these 88 keys from the vantage of both performer and instructor. The book lacks a conventional narrative, opting instead for a butterfly strategy of quick exploration, then moving on. Hence the "Pieces" of the title; five sections enfold alightings on everything from the specific (the anatomy and musculature of playing) to the overarching (how music unlocks our hearts). The reader soon realizes Sherman's pedagogical style is holistic a term he would sneer at, having tagged himself "an old and unregenerate crust." (He's 66.) Here's his idea of homework, for instance: "I have asked one student to prepare a short discourse on the subject of chiaroscuro. . . another to. . . write an essay on the (plant) cycle, another to work up a list of twenty-five similes for the image of a samovar." Such careening well-roundedness informs the text. The book cites everyone from Edward Steichen to Lenny Dykstra (the man's a big sports fan), Rilke to Ben Hogan, Gerard Manley Hopkins to Wayne Gretsky. "Life and music were full of sweet surprises and agreeable detours," as Sherman's own beloved teacher, Edward Steurmann, showed him. "The role and privilege of being a musician implied a life without gloom, without pedantry."

Extractions: BY LLOYD SCHWARTZ When Gianluca Cascioli played the Beethoven First Piano Concerto with the Boston Symphony Orchestra Thanksgiving weekend, he inaugurated a local run of Beethoven piano concertos. There were three during the next two weeks, and each one had something vital to say. The Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, under principal guest conductor Gunther Schuller, presented Beethovens Third with Russell Sherman, one of the most "thinking" (or "re-thinking") and "feeling" pianists around, and the first American to record all of Beethovens piano sonatas and concertos following in the footsteps of the greatest 20th-century Beethoven pianist, Artur Schnabel, who became, in the 1930s, the very first pianist ever to record them all (Shermans new three-CD Beethoven-concerto box has just been released on GM, Gunther Schullers record label see below). The Third Concerto, a dramatic piece in C minor, was obviously inspired by Mozarts heartbreaking Concerto in the same key (K.491, which Sherman will be playing with Emmanuel Musics Craig Smith on January 12). But from the moment the piano enters, you know youre dealing with a composer who is staking a claim to new musical territory. Shermans entrance began as an earth-shaking rumble welling up from some deep terrestrial core and erupting like the sacred river in Coleridges contemporaneous "Kubla Khan" ("And from this chasm, with ceaseless turmoil seething,/As if this earth in fast thick pants were breathing,/A mighty fountain momently was forced"). Immediately the pianist repeated the theme in his tenderest, most pained voice as he entered into dialogue with Schuller. His clear bright arpeggios seemed to lift right out of the orchestra. The cadenza became an Odyssey heroic and rangy (was the pianist just passing through Hungary?), and searching. Shermans ultra-pianissimo trills practically glowed in the dark.
