Top 10 Pianists Of The 20th Century He is much faster than Sviatoslav Richter, Jorge Bolet, dimitris sgouros, Horowitz was, for me, the greatest pianist in the 20th century. http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/Strasse/8618/pianists.html
Extractions: Join Recent updates: 6 April 2003: Added a new Horowitz CD recently released by Naxos 19 January 2003: Polished the writing a bit, everywhere 2 September 2002: Added links to discography pages that I could find, and re-wrote part of the introduction. 3 June 2002: Demoted Wilhelm Backhaus and Rudolf Serkin to the second-tier page, enabling me to rename this page as "Top 10" instead of the awkward-sounding "Top 12". Here is my "Top 10" list of the 20th century's greatest pianists. Interestingly, all of them died before the end of the century, which means that none of them will reappear in the Top 10 list for the 21st century. Let me emphasize five things. First, please don't be pissed if your favorite pianists aren't mentioned here. You may find some of them on two other pages that I wrote, namely, Great pianists besides the "Top 10" , where I discuss quite a few other pianists who are in my opinion nearly as great as the ten listed here, and Other pianists, good and bad

Disky - Royal Classics Here, the pianist is put through even more strenuous virtuoso sections, but theConcerto as a dimitris sgouros, Piano. Rachmaninov, Sergei, Op.30, 1983 http://www.toccata.nu/cd-label/disky/ROY6459.html
Extractions: Royal Classics Disc No: Price: It may be only a mischievous rumour, but the story goes that Tchaikovsky was not responsible for the whole of his world-famous Piano Concerto No 1. He worked on it during 1874-5 and sought advice from his friend Nikolai Rubinstein as to its quality. Rubinstein suggested putting it out with the other rubbish. Horrorstruck at such a suggestion from a man whom he considered a friend, Tchaikovsky vowed to stand by his new work and not change a single note. But it seems that he did turn to others for their opinion, and the tremendously effective opening paragraph may have been the work of the French-born pianist-composer Edward Dannreither (1844-1905). Rachmaninov's piano concerti are direct descendants of Tchaikovsky's: Big, Romantic, and designed to move the soul of the listener while testing the hero of the hour - the pianist - with challenging difficulties, The intended hero of No 3 was its dedicatee, Josef Hofmann, but the work was written for Rachmaninov's first American tour in 1909 and the composer himself gave its first performance in New York that November. The almost immediate entry of the piano sets the mood of dark Romanticism and it is not long before the soloist displays his virtuosity amid broad and dreamy themes. The central Adagio, opening with lush woodwind and leading to sweeping string melodies, is virtually a set of variations, while the brightly-coloured finale has melodic links with the first movement. Here, the pianist is put through even more strenuous virtuoso sections, but the Concerto as a whole is no mere display piece. It is one of the composer's most skilfully structured works.

Extractions: ANOTHER GLORIOUS FESTIVAL CELEBRATION IN BUDAPEST With an overall budget of HUF 500 million, a humble number by international standards but still a considerable amount in Hungary, the Festival presents the current state of Hungarian art and culture interwoven with performances by some of the worlds most celebrated artists and musicians. "Our main target is to penetrate the overseas market but our own efforts are not enough," said Zsófia Zimányi, managing director at the Budapest Festival Center, the company that has been organizing the Festival for the last five years. Tourists flock to Budapest during the Spring Festival, however, the majority come from neighboring Austria and Germany. Only 16% of all visitors arrive from North America and 4% from Japan. Ticket prices, which bring in approximately 22% of the Festivals total income, have always constituted a problem for organizers, as they have to keep the fragile balance between setting prices based on the Hungarian market and keeping their tight budget in mind. "Prices have been on a steady increase over the past five years and the differences are substantial sometimes," Zimányi said. Highest category tickets range between HUF 6,500-8,000, which compared to the HUF 60,000 average monthly income in Hungary makes it prohibitive for many families to participate. Despite the generally high ticket costs, attendance at the Festival is as high as 97%-110% and the number is increasing on a yearly basis.
