Extractions: Great Britain formally acquired possession of Malta in 1814. The island staunchly supported the UK through both World Wars and remained in the Commonwealth when it became independent in 1964. A decade later Malta became a republic. Since about the mid-1980s, the island has become a freight transshipment point, financial center, and tourist destination. Malta is scheduled to become an EU member in May 2004. Major resources are limestone, a favorable geographic location, and a productive labor force. Malta produces only about 20% of its food needs, has limited fresh water supplies, and has no domestic energy sources. The economy is dependent on foreign trade, manufacturing (especially electronics and textiles), and tourism. Malta is privatizing state-controlled firms and liberalizing markets in order to prepare for membership in the European Union. The island remains divided politically, however, over the question of joining the EU. Continued sluggishness in the global economy is holding back exports, tourism, and overall growth. 15th edition of Malta Journalism Awards launched

Extractions: Malta 1998 added 9th April Lyrics Details of National final Below is the line up ( click here to jump ) for the Maltese final which sees another try by 1996 Maltese representative in Oslo, Miriam Christine But we now have the winner! Here are the results from Malta from Victor Axiak: The one that I love - Chiara (left of picture with Debbie Scerri; picture from Deo Grech) Chiara deserved it because she has such a powerful voice! Victor Axiak wrote shortly after Chiara won: First reactions after the festival were not very favourable. The Maltese people clearly do not agree with the final results. My opinion is that while this song is inferior to last year's song "Let me Fly" it can go one better at the Eurovision since these type of songs tend to obtain high places. Definitely a Top 10 song.

He writes: Good discussion. Sometimes going at it with hammer and chisel is preferable, though. The Drudge Report stuff on John Kerry's supposed affair with an intern swelled to a national non-story before Drudge eventually backpedaled. Most of the time Drudge has it right, or at least he's in the ballpark. But none of us would want to be on the receiving end of an apparent fairytale Kerry "story"well, maybe Tim wouldand then have everybody say, "Oh, never mind. Sorry about that." That said, I'm in my autumnal Andy Rooney years, so seize the day if you will. Used to be gonzo myself back in the day, and I'm probably still considered a bandoleered renegade at the
