It is nowhere near being complete, but by browsing through this information you should be able to get a good idea of who some of the teachers were, and who some of their students were. I have not tried to go into any detail about methodology or technical approaches except in the broadest sense where appropriate. Liszt studied with Carl Czerny, a student of Beethoven. He concertized all over Europe, composed, and taught many pianists, including the Americans Amy Fay and William Mason. Students

Extractions: Arthur Rubinstein Pianist The splendid piano virtuoso Arthur Rubinstein enjoyed tremendous popularity from the time of his debut at the age of 12. Though born in Poland, Rubinstein lived for much of the time in Paris and Berlin when not touring the world. Rubinstein was one of the first pianists to use the then-new medium of electronic recording, committing nearly his entire repertoire to vinyl. His command of the musical literature was vast, and included Chopin, Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert and Schumann. Rubenstein continued to actively perform until age 90.

Extractions: So a composite video such as this one is for me a veritable treasure trove, a true legacy of a large proportion of the great piano playing of the 20 th th . The video available for purchase is narrated by John Tusa, but the same program as seen on PBS several months ago was narrated by John Rubinstein, son of Arthur. I was told by the producers that since the film involved many studios from many countries, the video exists with various narrations in different languages. The small booklet enclosed with the video has a text that follows to a large extent the line of the film; it has been translated into English from an article in French. There are also commentaries by a number of pianists, conductors and managers, including Piotr Anderszewski, Daniel Barenboim, and Colin Davis. Some of these are enormously sympathetic, such as Anderszewski, or very insightful, such as Daniel Barenboim, who describes each artist in a particularly characteristic way. Cortot, for example, he describes as follows: "I think Cortot looked for the opium in music. He looked for anything that was extraordinary; he always looked for something, not sickly, but something abnormal, totally removed from reality, and far from anything that could be construed as smelling of normality."

Szeryng's masterful performance has been recorded with the soloist very close, perhaps the choice of producer James Walker or, perhaps, the violinist. Surely famed engineer Kenneth Wilkinson would have preferred a more natural perspective, but aside from prominence of the soloist, the sound is an example of RCA's best of the time. JVC's remastering is ultra-clear, with every nuance of Szeryng's playing vividly clear. The Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2 was recorded February 8, 1958, and displays the Russian pianist in prime form relatively early in his career. His 1972 DGG recordings of both of the composer's piano concertos with Eugen Jochum and the Berlin Philharmonic is considered to be near-definitive (and an exciting live Amsterdam Jochum performance from the following year is available on TAHRA (
