World's greatest Hot Tune Writer " Jelly Roll Morton's business card "Jelly Roll" Morton (Ferdinand Joseph LeMothe Mouton) seems to have been born in New Orleans in 1890. In his youth he worked mainly as a solo pianist in New Orleans and cities of the Gulf Coast. He traveled widely in North America in the 1910s as a vaudevillian, musician, entertainer, nightclub owner, and other non-musical pursuits. In Chicago in the early 1920s, jazz had become a commercial proposition. Morton published his compositions, both old and new. In 1923 he began recording, at first mostly as a piano soloist, and some with pick up groups and sitting in with other bands. His talent as an orchestrator became fully revealed when he had a chance to record for Victor with a well rehearsed band. The "Jelly Roll Morton's Red Hot Peppers" sides made in Chicago in 1926-1927 are some of the most highly regarded records in jazz history.

Enough fantasizing on Café Casablanca...this is a CD Review. Michael Feinstein (left) celebrates the music of George and Ira Gershwin who together ruled an entire generation of American music with their wonderful songs; with such "whistle-able" melodies and witty lyrics, that still has audiences tapping their toes and singing along today. George, whose symphonic works were considered "amateurish" until

The monumental works are well known, indeed the Fantasia Contrappuntistica (1910) has spawned an entire sub-genre of all-encompassing compositions such as Kaikhosru Sorabji's Opus Clavicembalisticum and Roland Stevenson's Passacaglia on DSCH . Equally impressive, if less influential, is Busoni's gigantic Piano Concerto (1904) which was recently recorded by Marc-André Hamelin on Hyperion These works, important as they are, give a false impression of Busoni's achievement. He was a skilled performer, remarkable even in an era rich in great pianists. He produced important editions of the music of Bach and Liszt. He was the teacher of such varied talents as Kurt Weill, Oscar Luening, and Edgar Varèse. He was an inspiration to the composers of the Second Viennese School. He was an important theorist, his classic work, Outline of a New Aesthetic of Music (1907), remains in print to this day. His operas

His father ran a second-hand bookstore, which inspired a six-year-old Irving to compose his first poem. Caesar studied at the Chappaqua Mountain Institute and graduated from Townsend Harris High School in New York. Once there, Caesar answered a newspaper ad and joined âHenry Fordâs Peace Shipââan unsuccessful effort to bring home the American forces fighting in Europe during the First World Warâas a secretary. Extractions: Here's the Plan ... Periodically over the next several months we will be surveying the piano bar scene in the various clubs around town. A successful piano bar can oftentimes pay the bills that will keep a club's cabaret room open. Many of these clubs have singing bartenders and waiters/waitresses who could sing circles around a very high percentage of the folks who put on shows in cabaret rooms. When it comes to learning how to grab and hold an audience, performing at a piano bar is to singing what working on a soap opera is to an up-and-coming actor: it's a great place to make a living and learn your craft at the same time. It's also a place where you can make a reputation. We should first explain that piano bars have different staffs on different nights. One staff might concentrate on pop music. Another might do more show tunes. Each evening is also driven by the pianist; he or she chooses the music that will be played, calls up the hired talent (the waiters and waitresses) to sing, and controls the access to the open mike. It's the pianist, therefore, who provides the spark of personality to any piano bar evening. This survey is more about the people who work in piano bars rather than the random folks who take advantage of a piano bar's open mike opportunities. The point is, there is an amazing array of talent that can be seen for the price of a beer and we'd like to tell you where, when, and how to find that talent. And our first stop on our tour will be the Friday night crew that works the piano bar at Helen's in Chelsea ...

James Taranto, at OpinionJournal.com the other day, had a great catch. Washington Post reporter Dana Milbank had written, Democrats . . . assailed Boltons knack for making enemies and disparaging the very organization he would serve. I believe that Bolton will be confirmed, in large part because Bush is the kind of president to stick by a Bolton. If anything, Democratic behavior has made Bush more pro-Bolton than ever, I wager. Years ago, I often said about Bush 41, No matter what you think of his presidency, he must be hailed for two things: the Gulf War and sticking by Clarence Thomas. I once said this in the presence of several men who had worked in the Bush (41) administration. They said, No, no: Dont credit Bush with the Thomas victory. He was ready to bail, but Thomas stood tall and immovable, in effect saving himself. Oh, well.

Extractions: BY BOB GULLA Willie Myette, John Funkhouser, and Mike Connors have the kind of jazz and rock pedigree that lends itself to extraordinary and unexpected results. Local pianist Myette proved he had a flair for melody and arranging on his recent solo outing, This Is Jazz . Funkhouser, whose name couldnt be more appropriate for a bass player, also leads his own band FunkHouse and has toured the US, Asia, and elsewhere in pursuit of the perfect groove. Drummer Mike Connors has played with the likes of Joe Hunt and Alan Dawson, as well as erstwhile local neo-loungers Combustible Edison. Their adventurous debut together as Katahdins Edge is a lot like nothing youve heard before. Step Away brings drama and depth and forward movement to what can often be a pretty pat jazz formula. The title cut begins with an almost acid-jazz rhythm track running under everything like a rushing current, while Myette swims atop it with his fleet and beautiful piano hooks. The piece demands the listeners attention, and keeps it for the entire disc, through cinematic tunes like "Enigma" and the Guaraldi-esque "Zargonic Effect." Throughout the album, the performances often extend into the sublime.

Lets dissect what makes this a winning album.
