BluesTone "Jelly Roll Morton" Rolls 137199 Sweet Man (Pinkard) played by Jelly roll Morton $11 Robbie theorizesthat the editor for the instrumental rolls was not even a pianist, http://www.bluesrolls.com/Blues.Morton.html
Extractions: Click here to see the entire article . Courtesy of Mike Montgomery These Jelly Roll Morton rolls are (not even arguably?) the most significant body of jazz recordings ever issued on music rolls no other jazz artist of this significance made as many quality rolls that not only stand on their own as great piano rolls, but stand out as significant additions to the body of recordings the composer left for us. As James Dapogny states in his masterpiece folio published for the Smithsonian Institution Jelly Roll Morton: Collected Piano Music (pg. 58): "By improvising more variations Morton was able to expand a performance when making a piano roll. He did this on several rolls..." These rolls have probably been reissued more times than those by any other artist, and justifiably so (I've even issued two of these already). The difference this time is that Robbie Rhodes and I have gone over each of these rolls with a fine-toothed comb and corrected all the rhythmic irregularities and other mistakes which occured in the originals. Two titles in particular have benefitted most from this effort: London Blues and Stratford Hunch . All word rolls are now available with the original lyrics. And when you include the last two rolls on my last list (137199 was Sweet Man and 137200 was Shreveport Stomp ) this list marks the first time in a long time that all 12 known Jelly Roll Morton rolls have been available at one time in one place! Even that is less impressive than the fine job that Robbie has done at correcting the glaring errors which appeared in the original rolls. After his corrections were made I layed the draft copies of each roll on top of Mike Montgomery's original and marked each and every note which had changed, then played both versions and approved every correction that appears on these production copies.

Extractions: 1977 - To Date Album Samples Contact Al Odds and Ends ... Awards Washboard Guitar 1977 to Date The "Rebels" lasted only a few short months, before I was approached to join a new band, this time as pianist. Zoot Moneys Big Roll Band (the name was thought up in my mothers living room, when we misheard a line from Chuck Berrys "Johnny B. Goode"), aimed to reverse the trend of the previous couple of years and take rock music back to its rocknroll roots. The bandleader, Roger Collis, had originally intended Zoot to handle the piano as well as vocals, but - at least in those days - my technique was better. (If it had been organ and not piano, Id never have got the job) Zoot Moneys Big Roll Band went on to become a cult attraction on the London rhythm and blues scene, but by then Id left, as usual refusing to turn pro, though I remain friends with Zoot to this day. The history of the band after it left Bournemouth is well documented, but one by-product of its earlier years is always ignored. We introduced what was probably the first version of line-dancing in the UK. The Hully Gully was a minor hit for The Olympics at the end of 1959, but the dance of the same name made no impact whatever in the jive-mad UK. The song had a nice feel about it, and Zoot added it to our list of numbers. During one of our first performances of it, Zoot began doing the dance steps of the "Southampton" jive - three steps to the side, and a gentle little kick - and the audience gradually followed suit, until they were all facing the stage in lines, mirroring his movements. We were now gigging across most of Southern England, and the dance quickly became a craze, though not always done to The Olympics song.

Roll History Page (also known as the Billings Piano roll Co.) in Milwaukee. Muth is listed inmusician union directories of the period as a professional pianist. http://www.player-care.com/rollhist.html
Extractions: Hi Robbie, I noted your comment to a letter by Mr. Forcier yesterday, remarking that you felt Armand Muth might have been a pseudonym for Rudy Erlebach. I wanted to clarify that this is absolutely not the case. Here is some information and thoughts on these two very talented roll arrangers. Armand Muth was a real person, not a pseudonym. He made rolls for only two companies; US Music Roll Co. in Chicago, and Staffnote Music Roll Co. (also known as the Billings Piano Roll Co.) in Milwaukee. His first rolls are on US and date from about 1918-19, including WW1 songs such as "Madelon." When the Billings Roll Co. was started in the early 20s (by two brothers, if memory serves, one of whom was Robert Billings, a prolific US roll artist), Armand Muth became their principal roll artist. He continued to make most of their rolls (in Milwaukee) until they folded sometime around 1931 or '32. Billings-manufactured rolls were issued on the following labels: Playrite, Staffnote, Hitz, and (rarely) Browne. Muth is listed in musician union directories of the period as a professional pianist. I believe Mike Montgomery has a Detroit musician's union list which shows him as being active throughout the 30s and later.

In the 1970's Bob Crosby formed a "set" group of musicians who toured the USA. at times fronted by such well known leaders as Freddie Martin, Bob Crosby, Frankie Carle and Art Mooney and Buddy. In 1974, Buddy led the revived Glenn Miller Orch. (Ray McKinley had led the band for 10 years and then retired. In the quiet, well-lit environment of the Coolidge Auditorium, housed within the United States Library of Congress, a lone man sits at the piano, comping as he tells his life story. It is the story of a hustler, pool player, cardsharp, fight promoter, pimp, and musician, and it is peppered with outrageous claims , ribald tales, and remembrances of events that stretch the credulity of even the most generous listener. Periodically he punctuates his stories with full-fledged songs, the piano ringing out with knuckle-busting stomps, joined by high-spirited vocals singing often-bawdy lyrics. The recording machine that runs continuously, tended by the only other person present in the auditorium, captures all of this. The performer is Jelly Roll Morton, once one of America's most popular performers and songwriters, down on his luck and mostly forgotten. Now, as a desperate act, he performs the songs he's written over the years and tells the tales he remembers for the tape recorder of Alan Lomax at the Library of Congress, a document that will become the most comprehensive record of Morton's contribution to music.
