Extractions: Printer friendly version People : Industry/Music Biz You may know Naim as a UK-based hi-fi manufacturer, but they also own a record label, and apply the same esoteric standards to the records they release as they do to their audio equipment. Phil Ward investigates the label's obsession with sound and explains their recording and mastering techniques. It's remarkable that there is so little cross-fertilisation and cooperation between the hi-fi and recording industries, especially when you consider how badly they need each other in these days of ubiquitous lossy compression and on-line audio delivery. But then the relationship between the two industries has always been a touch frosty. Each side has historically seemed to view the other as a tolerable bunch of well-meaning amateurs at best and at worst as a hoard of dangerous loonies to be vilified at every opportunity. So it's a brave hi-fi company which becomes directly involved in the music recording process, thus deliberately putting itself in a position where it no longer has the excuse of "poor recording quality" to blame for any less-than-wonderful sounds which might emanate from its gear. It's particularly risky if the company has based its brand and business on a philosophy of putting the highest-possible sound quality first, second, and third.

Clark Tracey Mornington Lockett, julian Arguelles, Gerard Presencer, Alec Dankworth, an octet shared with pianist Dave Newton, Continental Drift an 11 piece http://www.jazzcds.co.uk/clarktracey/clarkpage.htm
Extractions: Clark Tracey Clark Tracey was born in London, England in 1961. From an early age Clark took to the piano and vibraphones and at the age of 13 he turned to the drums and gigged until the age of 17 when, in 1978, he turned professional by joining his illustrious father Stan Tracey's various groups of that time. In that context he has toured and recorded extensively to the present day. In 1981 he formed the first of his own various groups which featured Django Bates and Iain Ballamy. Later groups have included Guy Barker, Jamie Talbot, Nigel Hitchcock, Dave O'Higgins, Mark Nightingale, Mornington Lockett, Julian Arguelles, Gerard Presencer, Alec Dankworth, Arnie Somogyi and Steve Melling. Clark also composes and arranges and has received commissions for his own quintet, an octet shared with pianist Dave Newton, 'Continental Drift' - an 11 piece band co-composed with Stan Tracey commissioned by The Arts Council, and big band arrangements for the Berkshire Youth Jazz Orchestra and the Appleby Festival big band. In addition he has written string arrangements for Claire Martin and Tina May. As a freelance drummer he has performed at one time or another with virtually every important jazz artist in the UK and an ever expanding list of American and European visitors (see list below). Clark's sources of inspiration are as varied as the genres in which he finds himself, but his main influences are Roy Haynes, Philly Joe Jones, Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Art Blakey, Sam Woodyard and Frankie Dunlop. His achievements have been rewarded three times (1993, 1997 and 2002), from the British Jazz Awards 'Best Drums' category and he received endorsements from Zildjian Cymbals in 1998 and from Vic Firth Sticks and Remo Drumheads in 1999.

Biography - Joe Zawinul (Bio 856) While with Adderley, Zawinul evolved from a hard bop pianist to a soul/jazz julian Cannonball Adderley, Dizzy s Business , 1963, Milestone, CDR http://musicbase.h1.ru/PPB/ppb8/Bio_856.htm
Extractions: Joe Zawinul belongs in a category unto himself a European from the heartland of the classical music tradition (Vienna) who learned to swing as freely as any American jazzer, and whose appetite for growth and change remains insatiable. Zawinul's curiosity and openness to all kinds of sounds made him one of the driving forces behind the electronic jazz-rock revolution of the late '60s and '70s and later, he would be almost alone in exploring fusions between jazz-rock and ethnic music from all over the globe. He is one of a bare handful of synthesizer players who actually learned how to play the instrument, to make it an expressive, swinging part of his arsenal. Prior to the invention of the portable synthesizer, Zawinul's example helped bring the Wurlitzer and Fender-Rhodes electric pianos into the jazz mainstream. Zawinul also has become a significant composer, ranging (like his idol Duke Ellington ) from soulful hit tunes to large-scale symphonic-jazz canvases. Yet despite his classical background, he now prefers to improvise compositions spontaneously onto tape, not writing them out on paper.

Extractions: Another year has passed during which I've interviewed dozens of musical artists, mostly from the jazz world, and, as always, from these conversations, I've learned a great deal about how artists create their work and manage to survive, even flourish in the music industry. My last question during these interviews is usually this: What particular albums or CDs, or even just artists themselves, are you especially thankful for? I emphasized that this wasn't a question about "desert island" favorites or even necessarily an artist's best work, What I hoped to elicit were more thoughtful answers about what mattered most to these artists, what struck them, what, perhaps, they even felt was a gift from the cosmos. So, here for the third consecutive year in the Weekly (the length, so far, of my tenure at this esteemed journal) is a list of thanks from a wide range of musicians. Particular songs are noted in quotation while albums are in italics. And I've also included some of the more interesting comments about why these musicians picked the musicians they did. Biographical/Historical Sketch: In 1953, Mississippi Southern College (now the University of Southern Mississippi) Registrar Dr. O. N. Darby asked Brown to come and work for him. Darby was also an English major from Newton, Mississippi and former Superintendent of Schools there. Brown and her mother moved to Hattiesburg, where they were next door neighbors to Dr. and Mrs. Aubrey Lucas. Dr. Lucas, then Director of Admissions, would later become president of the University of Southern Mississippi. The Lucases and the Browns became very good friends, and Katherine rode to work every day with Dr. Lucas. Brown has received numerous honors during her life. In her youth, she won first place in a piano performance, first place in the state of Mississippi in English Literature, and received the Alpha Sigma Alpha award. Her career at the University of Southern Mississippi also garnered her many honors. The Bootstrappers’ Pen and Sword Fraternity established the Kathy Brown Scholarship in 1965, which is still providing financial assistance to qualified students. She was also named Outstanding Staff Member in 1973. However, possibly her greatest accomplishment was being the first recipient of the Hattiesburg Jaycees’ Boss of the Year award in 1974. She won this award because the Bootstrappers regarded her affectionately as their "boss. "

Hancock is one of jazz music's most important and influential pianists and composers. He embraced elements of rock funk , and soul while adopting freer stylistic elements from jazz As part of Miles Davis 's "second great quintet" Hancock helped redefine the role of a jazz rhythm section , and was later one of the first jazz musicians to embrace synthesizers and hip hop . Yet for all his restless experimentalism, Hancock's music is often melodic and accessible; he has had many songs "crossover" and achieve success among pop audiences.
