Extractions: Sergei Rachmaninoff was one of the finest pianists who ever lived. He was helped, no doubt by his pair of huge hands. He was born in Oneg (near Novgorod) on April 1, 1873 and he died in Beverly Hills on March 28, 1943. Until the death of his friend Scriabin, Rachmaninoff had only played his own music in recitals. After Scriabin died in 1915, Rachmaninoff played his friend's music at a series of recitals, but in a completely different style from Scriabin. Many were outraged, but a young Prokofiev came backstage and told Rachmaninoff that he played very well. Rachmaninoff asked: "And you thought I'd play badly?" After that Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev didn't speak for years. Rachmaninoff was an early wunderkind - he entered the Moscow conservatory when he was 14. He won medals for his piano playing, and he was very serious about composition early in his life. During preparations for performance of the students' final projects, the professor in charge freely cut and altered the students' compositions, but Rachaminoff not only refused to make any changes, he even had the nerve to point out the errors in the professor's conducting. In 1892 he wrote the famous Prelude in C-sharp minor. There is a story that the reason this prelude became so popular is because Rachmaninoff forgot to copywright it, so all the publishers had a field day with it. His first symphony, on the other hand, was very badly received. Afterwards he could not write any music for three years. He was treated by a hypnotic specialist, Dr. Nikolai Dahl, who repeated over and over: "You will write your concerto... You will write your concerto... You will work with great facility... The concerto will be of excellent quality." Rachmaninoff did write a concerto, finishing it in 1901, and it became his most popular work. In the years before World War I Rachmaninoff wrote many excellent songs, including Vocalise, and extremely challenging piano piece, "tailored to his own spectacular hands."

Extractions: Sergei Rachmaninoff, 1873-1943. Concerto No.2 in C Minor for Piano and Orchestra, Op.18. Completed 1901, first performance October 27, 1901, in Moscow. Scored for 2 each flutes, oboes, clarinets, and bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, tympani, cymbals, bass drum, solo piano, and strings. Ever since the success of the Academy-Award-winning movie Shine in 1996, the so-called ``Rach 3'' has been indelibly engraved in the public mind as ``the'' Rachmaninoff piano concerto. Yet for nearly a century it had been an earlier work, the Second, that consistently won accolades and enthralled audiences, and the composer's struggle to complete that concerto is surely as fascinating as that of David Helfgott, the pianist at the center of Shine , to master the Third. Prelude in C sharp Minor , so that it was reproduced indiscriminately in Britain and the U.S.without proper payment. Things finally came to a head in January of 1900, when the composer visited Leo Tolstoy. Rachmaninoff played the piano for the legendary writer, who reacted by saying, ``Tell me, is such music needed by anybody?... I must tell you how I dislike it all!... Beethoven is nonsense, Pushkin and Lermontov also.'' ``It was awful,'' recalled Rachmaninoff. Later in the evening, Tolstoy apologized. ``Please excuse me,'' he said. ``I am an old man. I did not mean to hurt you.'' Rachmaninoff's rejoinder was quick. ``How could I be hurt on my own account, if I was not hurt on Beethoven's?'' Nevertheless, he went into a deep depression and stopped composing altogether.

It was there, while recovering from the motorcycle accident that left his right arm broken in eight places, that pianist Martin Berkofsky listened to Sergei Rachmaninoff's own recording of his fourth piano concerto over and over again. Though Mr. Berkofsky had never played a note of the piece, he "got it in his mind" that he would perform it. As soon as he could get to a telephone, he called the music director of Iceland Radio and announced, "When I get out of here, I want to play Rachmaninoff's Fourth Concerto with you." And indeed, a little more than a year after Mr. Berkofsky left the hospital, he played the piece with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra for broadcast on Iceland Radio. This is a recording of that performance. It was Mr. Berkofsky's first recording after the accident which he thought would mean the end of a career that began when he was eight years old and that included: performances in more than 25 countries; nearly 150 radio and television broadcasts; and recordings with both the London and Berlin Symphonies. As such, it marked the beginning of his second career, one dedicated to producing concerts and recordings to help others.

Classical Pianist Dimitris Sgouros Biography Classical pianist Dimitris Sgouros. Touring Schedule, biography he performedSergei rachmaninoff s 3rd Piano Concerto with tremendous success. http://www.sgouros-pianist.com/biography.htm
Extractions: email info@sgouros-pianist.com Biography photos Arthur Rubinstein exclaimed: I thank God for keeping me alive so that I would be able to hear with my own ears Sgouros play. He is the best pianist I have ever heard, including myself. He then took off his gold watch and put it on Dimitris Sgouros' wrist as if passing on the torch. Two months later he was dead. Born in Athens, Greece in 1969, Dimitris Sgouros began his career as an 8 year old prodigy at the Athens Conservatory, where by the time he completed his studies he had received every award given. He then continued his studies at the University of Maryland and the Royal Music of Academy of London, from which he graduated with 98% - the highest mark ever granted by the Academy. In 1982 at the age of 12, Sgouros made his Carnegie Hall debut with the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington D.C., under the direction of Mstislav Rostropovich, performing Rachmaninoffs Piano Concerto No. 3. He has recorded 10 albums which are sold in many countries, with compositions for solo piano by Schumann, Brahms, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt and Mozart and also Rachmaninoffs Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Tchaikovsky's 1st Piano Concerto and Tchaikovskys Fantasia with the London Philharmonic, and Liszts Concerto No. 2 with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Slovenia, to name a few as well as the 1st and 2nd Piano Concertos by J. Brahms with the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra.

Extractions: After study at the St. Petersburg and Moscow Conservatories, Sergey Rachmaninov embarked on a career in Russia as a composer, pianist and conductor. Exile from his own country after the Communist Revolution of 1917 forced an increased concentration on performance, as one of the most distinguished pianists of the day, activity that enabled him to support his family but left less time for his work as a composer. For practical reasons he eventually based himself in the United States, while keeping a villa in Switzerland. He died in Beverly Hills in 1943. Orchestral Music The second of Rachmaninov's four piano concertos holds an unchallenged position among romantic works in this form, its popularity closely rivalled by the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, for piano and orchestra. While the Symphonic Dances of 1940 enjoy some popularity, as well as the symphonic poem The Rock and the dark-hued Isle of the Dead, with its recurrent motif from the Latin Requiem Mass, the second of his three numbered symphonies is still more familiar. Greg Sandow -- Rachmaninoff 3d Comparisons RealAduio comparisons of six recordings of the rachmaninoff 3d Piano Concerto. You can hear six pianists play the same passage. http://www.gregsandow.com/rach3.htm
Extractions: This all started with a "Consumer Guide" I wrote for the Village Voice, New York's big alternative weekly. I listened to 17 recordings of this suddenly popular concerto, and wrote 17 quick paragraphs, with a grade attached to each one. Poor David Helfgott got an F; Vladimir Horowitz got an A, for his version with Fritz Reiner conducting. (Though a later Horowitz release, a live performance with Eugene Ormandy, only got C+.) You can read this adventure, right here on this site. Much later and by a happy coincidence I was asked to write about the concerto once again, this time for the Los Angeles Times. In fact, I was asked to defend it against critical attacks, which I was happy to do. The more I listened to it, for my Voice consumer guide, the more I loved it. And I enlisted two very articulate pianists to help me defend it Alexander Toradze, and Byron Janis. This piece, too, is available here But you want to hear the music my comparisons of six pianists playing the same Rach 3 excerpt. Click the RA icons below to hear the pianist of your choice, and if you have RealAudio 3.0 or higher installed on your computer you'll hear the excerpts "streaming" down the Internet in real time.
