Extractions: but a lifetime is not enough for music Sergei Rachmaninoff was born on April 1, 1873, on a large estate near the ancient city of Novgorod, Russia. His father was an army officer and his mother was a wealthy heiress. His father gambled, drank, and squandered his wife's money. He deserted his family when Sergei was nine years old. By all accounts Young Sergei was a problem child, but had an extraordinary talent at the piano. At age nine he entered the College of Music in St. Petersburg. Because of his natural gift, Sergei did not bother to study. To solve his discipline problem Rachmaninoff moved to Moscow to live with Nikolai Zvereff of the Moscow Conservatory. Zvereff was one of the leading music teachers in Russia at the time. In 1892, Rachmaninoff graduated from the conservatory with high honors. In 1909, Rachmaninoff made his first visit to the United States, receiving an enthusiastic welcome. Afterwards, he visited America once every season. Rachmaninoff died on March 28, 1943, only a few weeks after attaining his American citizenship, and five days before his seventieth birthday. During his career Rachmaninoff wrote 145 compositions, including piano concertos and symphonies. If you are aware of books, movies, databases, web sites or other information sources about

Extractions: Brilliant composer, talented pianist, and control-demanding conductor, Sergei Rachmaninoff was born on a family estate near Novgorod, Russia. His father and grandfather were already very good amateur pianists, thus Sergei followed in their footsteps, as he began piano lessons at a very young age. Although he was born with that musical exposure, he was expected to go on to military school for a career there. At the age of nine, Rachmaninoff traveled to St. Petersburg due to his father's ill judgement with money, as he lost the family fortune. There, Sergei entered as a scholarship student at the conservatory. However, Rachmaninoff was not a good student, as he often cut class and wandered about the grand city, sometimes even spending his time at the skating rink. His grandmother always took him to church services, where he admired the singing and the tolling of the bells. Even though he deeply enjoyed music, his teachers foresaw no such relation for him with music. Later, however, when he entered the Moscow conservatory at fifteen, he discovered new horizons when he added composition to his piano playing. At Moscow, Rachmaninoff lived at the home of his teacher, the great Nicolai Zverev, who supervised every detail of his students' lives. There, Rachmaninoff met and played for many giant figures of Russia, including Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky , who became his musical idol.

Extractions: Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff , also Sergey Rachmaninov or Serge Rakhmaninov April 1 March 28 ) was a Russian composer pianist , and conductor Born in Semyonovo , near Novgorod into a wealthy family with a strong military background, Rachmaninoff had his first piano lessons with his mother at the family estate at Oneg . After a decline in their fortunes, the family moved to Saint Petersburg where Rachmaninoff studied at the conservatory , before going on to Moscow , where he studied piano with Nikolay Zverev and Alexander Siloti (a student of Franz Liszt and Rachmaninoff's cousin). He also studied harmony with Anton Arensky and counterpoint with Sergei Taneyev . While still a student he wrote a one act opera Aleko , and a set of piano pieces, Op. 3, which contains the popular and famous Prelude in C sharp minor, a piece he came to detest through 40 years of audiences demanding it as an encore at his piano recitals. Already in his early years he showed great composing skills. His first serious pieces for the piano were composed and performed when he was thirteen years old during his stay as student at Zverev's. In 1892, at an age of 19, he completed his first piano concerto. The Concerto was later revised in 1917.

Extractions: Joshua Pierce, piano Sergei Vassileivitch Rachmaninoff was born on April 2, 1873 at Oneg, Novgorod, Russia. He died in Beverly Hills, California, March 28, 1943. All during his life, and for many decades after his passing, Sergei Rachmaninoff was regarded as - at best - an anomoly, a throwback to the 19th century, as his music always expressed itself through an unabashedly Romantic language: At times haunting, morose and forboding; at others, gentle, passionate and con molte dolce. But always, all these conflicting pathos would recede as the finales of his greatest works - such as the Symphony No. 2, the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini and the valedictory Symphonic Dances - would give way to beautiful resolutions of triumph. If listening to Rachamaninoff seemed to some a futile exercise in depression and an exploration of the depths of sorrow, this was because of the complexity of the composer himself. Almost all of Rachmaninoff's major works were undergirded by the Roman Catholic Dies Irae. But that was only half of the story; for the listener will have found himself transported from the inevitability of death, to rise above the despair and exalt in the life-affirming, powerful finales for which the composer was so well-known. Only in Die Toteninsel (after Arnold Boecklin's painting) is death the final arbiter.

Rachmaninoff was born on April 1, 1873, near Novgorod. In Moscow his piano teachers included the stringent disciplinarian Nikolay Zverov and Rachmaninoff's cousin Aleksandr Siloti, who gave him the heritage of his own teacher, the Hungarian pianist-composer Franz Liszt. There also, Rachmaninoff studied with three eminent Russian composers Anton Arensky, Sergey Taneyev, and his most important musical mentor, Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky. Rachmaninoff's Prelude in C-sharp Minor (1892), for piano and orchestra, and his opera Aleko (1893) established his reputation as a composer. Also written in 1893 was his Trio élégiaque, in memory of Tchaikovsky. In 1897 his Symphony No. 1 in D Minor was performed. Its disastrous reception caused him to stop composing, and for three years he worked solely as a pianist and conductor. His Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor (1900)

Extractions: Misery Loves Company I'm too happy to enjoy Rachmaninoff as much as I used to. When I was a suffering, insufferable teenager, he was my favorite composer. During my first semester in college, I wallowed in my misery to the tear-jerking melodies of this latter-day (1873-1943) romantic. Here was my soul-mate: a composer who shared my depressions, insecurities, and longings for acceptance and love. My roommate at the time - a vulgar, tasteless, oil tycoon's son from Wichita, Kansas - referred to this world-class composer, pianist and conductor as "Rocky." I almost killed him, but he dropped out of school, and my life, before I had the chance. I shall always love Rachmaninoff, but I doubt that I shall ever relate to his music quite as much as I did back then. Misery loves company, and Rachmaninoff kept me company, record after record, day after day. Starting with his most famous works - the Piano Concerto No. 2, the Symphony No. 2 , and the Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini - I expanded my record collection to include every Rachmaninoff composition that had ever been issued. I even learned to play his most famous piano piece, the Prelude in C-Sharp Minor, myself - no small feat for someone who rarely attempted any work which wasn't in C major. The Second Symphony, like the Second Piano Concerto, is one of Rachmaninoff's indisputable masterpieces, even though he himself didn't realize this. "I give my solemn word," he said after finishing it, "no more symphonies!" Nevertheless, he broke his promise - only once - some 30 years later.

His performances are truly magnificent. They sound impossible! You can't believe that there are no other pianists playing at the same time! In fact, sometimes it's hard to believe that there isn't an entire orchestra there, the sound is so full and lush! Lewenthal brings out the best in these compositions, which is very good indeed. And the remastering is excellent, too. Even the program notes, which are by Lewenthal himself, are fascinating and extremely well written. Also on this disc is the most interesting group composition, Hexameron , by Liszt, Thalberg, Pixis, Herz, Czerny and Chopin. Bach: 5 Versionen der Passacaglia BWV 582 (Signum SIG X93-00) This is a great idea, well executed: a CD with five versions of the famous "Passacaglia" by J.S. Bach. The first version is performed on a period organ by Christian Rieger. The second, a piano version by Eugene d'Albert (1864-1932) is performed by Ernst Breidenbach. Next comes a version for romantic organ by Franz Liszt (1811-1886) and Johann Gottlob Topfer (1791-1870). The fourth version is for piano, four hands, by Max Reger (1873-1916). The pianists are Oliver Kolb and Ernst Breidenbach. And, finally, Leopold Stokowski's (1882-1977) orchestral transcription performed by the Frankfurt State Orchestra conducted by Nikos Athinaos.

Extractions: Sergei Rachmaninoff: Quotes from Books Rachmaninoff sees a hypnotist Fate decided otherwise. Actually, the second Pianoforte Concerto in C minor (so far, the best known here of his four works in that form for pianoforte and orchestra) was not completed until the spring of 1901, and it was Basil Sapellnikoff, not the composer, who was soloist in it at its initial performance in this country by the Philharmonic Society in London that winter. But this is anticipatory. The delay in writing the new (second) piano concerto was due to a recurrence of his creative dullness and physical inertia, when he returned to Moscow, to live again with his aunt, Madame Satina, and her family. A spaniel dog Levko, he then owned, was more agreeable company than the society of human beings, a condition that worried his aunt and cousins very much, for they were fond of him, and he seemed to be drifting into a kind of melancholia. Among the plans they tried to arouse him from his indifference to his surroundings was a visit to Count Leo Tolstoy, who had promised to talk with him and try to induce him to shake off this lethargy that was hampering his career. But Rachmaninoff remained unimpressed. Thus existence dragged through for him (and his cousins and aunt!) all through 1899 until the year waned, when a psycho-analyst named Dr. N. Dahl, created a considerable stir in Moscow by the success of his cures of various nervous troubles by means of hypnotic suggestion. The Satins induced Rachmaninoff to consult him. From the beginning of January 1900 until April, he went daily to Dr. Dahl to receive treatment while lying in an hypnotic doze in an easy chair in the doctor's apartment. This treatment consisted of the almost ceaseless repetition to him of the words: "You will begin to write you concerto... You will work with great facility... The concerto will be of an excellent quality..."
