Glenn and I have had many adventures together, including sometimes dating the same people. Maestro Iloh Yung , Mr. Jacoby and Franz Krager's former conducting student, invited him to conduct the staged opera Rigoletto by Verdi. Jacoby was the first American conductor to lead an orchestra in this theatre. He also conducted the students' symphony orchestra of the Astrakhan State Conservatory in their first time performance of the th "Romantic" Symphony by Bruckner. Timothy Jones soloed with the Wichita Symphony in Mozart's Requiem, the New Mexico Symphony in Hindemith's When Lilacs Last in the Door-yard Bloom'd and at Smith College in Vaughan Williams' A Sea Symphony . These performances took place March 13-27 th Phi Kappa Phi honor society inducted Lorne Dechtenberg (composition major) on Sunday, March 28th. The society recognized Mr. Dechtenberg's perfect (4.0) grade point average, the best in the senior class.

Extractions: Thus did the unusual organism called the New York City Ballet Orchestra become a fundamental part of the whole operation. It has the most demanding job of any ballet orchestra in the world, and perhaps the most important. With the arrival this summer of Andrea Quinn as its new full-time music director, the orchestra begins a new phase in its remarkable, sometimes rocky, history. If her performance in several guest appearances most recently, last week in "The Four Temperaments" is any indication, Quinn's effect on the orchestra, and, in turn, its effect on the company it serves, could be enormous. The orchestra's recent troubles are well known. Its two major strikes, in 1976 and 1999, caused an uproar in the company and the artistic community. In 1976 the debate was over salary increases. In 1999 it had to do with the much more questionable demand that members should regularly be able to send substitutes to rehearsals and performances. As music critic Anthony Tommasini reported in the New York Times, on the night that strike began "22 of the 62 musicians in the pit would have been substitutes." Needless to say, the quality of the orchestra's playing had suffered tremendously as a result of this practice. They stopped playing altogether on November 23, 1999: the opening night gala performance was cancelled, and for a few weeks the company performed "The Nutcracker" to taped music.
