"Paderewski: Portrait of a Musician" Exhibition is on display at Alfred Newman Recital Hall Gallery, USC, Los Angeles, from September 17, 2002 to January 24, 2003. Culled from the extensive collection of materials held at the Polish Music Center at the USC Thornton School of Music, this exhibition chronicles the life and career of Ignacy Jan Paderewski, the musician - statesman who received an honorary doctorate from USC in 1923. Throughout his musical career Paderewski was actively lobbying for Polish independence; he collected funds to benefit the country, its soldiers and the victims of the war. His campaign resulted in Poland returning to the map of Europe; he then became the first Prime Minister of Poland and the first Polish delegate to the League of Nations. Paderewski's compositions include songs and piano pieces, an opera, Manru (1901), and a

Premieres POLISH MUSIC HIGHLIGHTS OF 2002 Anniversaries Special programs were held in Poland to commemorate Karol Szymanowski's 120th birthday and 65th death anniversary. A gala event took place at the Jagiellonian University on 21 October highlighted by the presentation of the 4th and final volume of the Complete Correspondence of Szymanowski, which has been a life-long commitment by author Teresa Chylinska, who had collected 5,061 letters from 1903-1937 in various languages. The last two volumes were published with financial assistance from the Kosciuszko Foundation. A major event was held in Jan Kiepura's home town honoring his birth centennial. Henry Vars' 100th birthday and 25th anniversary of his death was remembered with an article by Yours Truly in November on the internet and in News of Polonia. Bass Bernard Ladysz celebrated his 80th birthday with a gala performance at the National Opera Teatr Wielki with several of his peers who performed with him. The 100th anniversary of the premiere of Paderewski's opera, "Manru" by the Metropolitan Opera company in February 1902 went unnoticed.

Extractions: The exhibit, which can be seen through May 28 on the ground floor of the Pusey Library, opened Wednesday afternoon with an informative reception. Circulating through the invited audience in order to chat about items were Fredric Woodbridge Wilson, head of the Harvard Theatre Collection and principal organizer of these Balanchine events, and Iris M. Fanger, dance critic and Wilson's co-curator for the exhibit. The photos, sketches, notations, communications and assorted artifacts on display were a selection from Harvard's Balanchine-relevant holdings and loans. Just a few examples may suffice to suggest the scope. From Balanchine's Russian life was a vivid brown-black-blue-yellow 1924 design by Alexander Golovin for a monster costume worn by Balanchine (then still known as Balanchivadze) in Fyodor Lopukov's Firebird at the Maryinsky. Shot in western Europe was a 1926 Man Ray photo that shows two bookend ballerinas, each with what seems like just a single skinny leg; the illusion is created by the modernist black/white costuming and make-up worn by dancers Felia Dubrovska and Lubov Tchernicheva in the Diaghilev Ballet Russe's production of Balanchine's
