Extractions: BIOGRAPHY DISCOGRAPHY REPERTOIRE Previous Page Ivo POGORELICH Ivo Pogorelich initially gained international attention as a pianist of rare gift and unique talent when he won the First Prize in the International Competition in Montreal, Canada, in 1980, having won previously First Prizes in several national events in the former Yugoslavia and the First Prize in the Alessandro Casagrande International Piano Competition in Terni, Italy, in 1978. But, it was the political controversy surrounding his elimination from the finals of the 1980 Warsaw International Competition and the resultant proclamation of Martha Argerich one of the jurors and herself the winner in 1965 "This man is a genius" that catapulted him to instant recognition and world frame. Since his recital debut in New York's Carnegie Hall in 1981, Ivo Pogorelich has made triumphant appearances in all the major concert halls throughout the USA, Canada, Europe, Australasia, Japan, South America and Israel, performing with the world's leading orchestras such as Berlin Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Vienna Philharmonic, Philadelphia, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Tonhalle Philharmonic, London Symphony and many others. He is one of the very few classical musicians today to sell out at virtually every concert venue.

Extractions: In 1975, the victory by Krystian Zimerman, the first Polish winner in 20 years, saw the entire country erupt in celebration. Vietnamese Dang Thai Son became the first pianist from an Asian country to win the Competition X in 1980. That year's Competition was also brought to fame by the incident in which Martha Argerich, who was one of the judges, stood down from the panel in a protest over the elimination of Yugoslav Ivo Pogorelich in the third preliminary. 1985 saw the victory return to Europe, with 19-year-old Stanislav Bunin from Moscow taking out the honours. His performance was such that the whole of Japan was overtaken by the Bunin sensation. With a history of turning out such great talent, the Competition witnessed an unusual turn of events when, in both 1990 and 1995, a first prize was not awarded-further proof that this Competition recognises only the absolute top level pianists in the world. The elusive first prize saw a comeback in 2000, going to Yundi Li of China, the first top prize winner in the fifteen years after that of Stanislav Bunin.

Extractions: Pianophiles are particularly excited about the return of the 48-year old Sokolov. As a youngster, Sokolov intended to become a conductor, then switched to piano. "When I was four I had my own little podium, a baton, and records and I used to 'conduct'," he told one interviewer. He started piano studies at 5, and at 16 he won the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competitions first prize and Gold Medal. His mentor at that time was Soviet pianist Emil Gilels, and his idols included Scriabins son-in-law Sofronitsky, Sergei Rachmaninov, Glenn Gould, Solomon, Dinu Lipatti, and Vladimir Horowitz. Despite many LP recordings on the Russian Melodiya label and a busy touring schedule, Sokolov remained a largely Soviet secret until the fall of the Iron Curtain. Sokolovs highly personal interpretations reveal an original thinker, who is also a perfectionist. Sokolov disapproves of music lovers who go to concerts merely to relax. "A concert should be strong, hard, psychological work for both the performer and the audience," he asserts. Sokolov specializes in the romantics - Brahms, Chopin, and Beethoven - whom he considers to be his contemporaries. "Contemporary music is music that's alive now. Byrd and Bach are contemporary, but something written yesterday could be dead today." Join Sokolov at the Ladies Morning Musical Club, Pollack Hall, 555 Sherbrooke Street West, March 21, 15H30. Tel. Chopin's works are interpreted by known and renowned pianists, as well as by young artists who are now entering into the world of great art. This year we are celebrating the creation, 75 years ago, of the first Chopin Committee, which organized the Festivals between 1931 and 1936, and also the 25 th edition of the Valldemossa Chopin Festival, which was revived by our Association in 1981. After a quarter of a century of performances by great pianists of international renown as well as new talents, and of exhibitions by contemporary artists, the Festival has become one of the most appealing gatherings of piano music and art.

Extractions: Biography, albums, concert review Ivo Pogorelich was born in Belgrade in 1958. He received his first piano lessons at the age of seven, and went to Moscow at the age of twelve to study at the Central Music School and then at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory. In 1976 he began intensive studies with the renowned pianist and teacher Aliza Kezeradze with whom he was married from 1980 until her premature death in 1996. Ivo Pogorelich won the Casagrande Competition in Terni (Italy) in 1978 and the Montreal International Music Competition in 1980; but it was the prize he failed to win that made him world-famous. In 1980 he entered the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw where his elimination in the third round sparked a fierce controversy which drew the attention of the whole musical world to the pianist. Martha Argerich called him a genius and left the jury in protest. Ivo Pogorelich gave his debut recital in New York's Carnegie Hall in 1981. Pogorelich supports young musicians. In 1986 he established a foundation in Croatia to raise funds for scholarships for young artists to further their studies abroad. Since 1989 the annual Ivo Pogorelich Festival has the aim of supporting promising young musicians at the beginning of their careers by giving them the opportunity to perform together with renowned artists. In 1994 the pianist set up a foundation in Sarajevo to raise money to build a hospital and to provide medical support for the people of Sarajevo. With this aim in mind, numerous concerts are planned for the forthcoming year under the auspices of UNESCO. Ivo Pogorelich also gives many charity concerts in support of, for example, the Red Cross, the rebuilding of Sarajevo, or the fight against illnesses such as cancer and multiple sclerosis. In 1988 he was named an "Ambassador of Goodwill" by UNESCO.
