Mr. Beech is a retired computer scientist who lives in Monterey. He is a clarinetist and occasional pianist. His mother was a pianist who brought him up to revere the playing of Solomon. Other great pianists that he has heard and admired over the years include Cortot, Myra Hess, Arrau, Katchen, Curzon, Brendel, Lupu, Ashkenazy, Cherkassky, and Perahia.) After a 15-year absence, the pianist Ivo Pogorelich returned to Davies Symphony Hall, San Francisco, on Sunday, October 24 th , 2004, with new surprises up his sleeve. Although his program photograph still shows him with long Lisztian locks, he appeared on the platform with hair close-cropped, and immediately embarked on a kind of deconstruction of Beethovens F-sharp major Sonata, Op. 78. This two-movement work, one of Beethovens own favorites, normally seems quite short and flowing, but here the Allegro non troppo of the first movement barely exceeded the tempo of the one-line Adagio cantabile introduction that preceded it (apart from the fluttering interjections of sixteenths, which were fluently played at something like the usual tempo). It was as though the pianist was sharing his fascination with the work, picking out a few interesting bass notes for special emphasis, or hesitating as though in the act of composition at the keyboard. (However, that cannot explain the fatal loss of momentum in hesitating before the final chord of the movement.) The

Extractions: Ivo Pogorelich Ivo Pogorelich is perhaps the only great pianist who became an instant celebrity for the prize he didn't win. It was in 1980, when he was eliminated in the third round of the Warsaw Chopin Competition. A argument ensued among the jurors, and Martha Argerich, a member of the jury, resigned in protest, claiming "Pogorelich is a genius!" The scandal provoked by Argerich's reaction made him famous overnight. The eyes of the musical world were soon upon young Ivo Pogorelich, and they have yet to be disappointed. Born in Belgrade in 1958, Ivo Pogorelich celebrates his 40th birthday on October 20th. He began playing the piano at the age of seven. After his classical training at the Moscow Conservatory, he took master classes from Aliza Kezeradze, who passed on to him the tradition of the Liszt-Siloti school. In an interview with the German weekly newspaper "Die Zeit", Pogorelich once listed the four most important things he learned from Kezeradze: "First, technical perfection as something natural. Second, an insight into the development of the piano sound, as perfected by the pianist-composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, composers who understood the piano both as a human voice ... and as an orchestra with which they could produce a variety of colors. Third, the need to learn how to use every aspect of our new instruments, which are richer in sound. Fourth, the importance of differentiation."

Extractions: Ivo Pogorelich, piano October 24, 7:00 pm NOTES ON THE PROGRAM Piano Sonata in F-sharp Major, Opus 78 Ludwig van Beethoven Born December 16, 1770 , Bonn Died March 26, 1827 , Vienna The Piano Sonata in F-sharp Major dates from 1809Beethoven completed it in October, just as the French occupation was nearing an end. It had been four years since he wrote his last piano sonata, the dramatic Appassionata Sonata of 1805, and to mark his return to the form Beethoven composed a sonata that could hardly be more dissimilar. Everything about the Sonata in F-sharp Major is original: it is extremely brief (nine minutes long), it is in only two movements, and its gentle mood is far from the conflict that drives the Appassionata.
