Extractions: Zygmunt who?, you may ask. If, like me, you had never even heard of Zygmunt Stojowski prior to the appearance of this disc it may be helpful if I begin with a biographical outline (for which I am indebted to Joseph Herters excellent liner notes). Stojowski was born in the Russian sector of Poland. At the age of 18, following studies in Cracow, he moved to Paris where his teachers included Delibes (for composition). He attracted considerable attention both as a virtuoso pianist and as a composer (his Symphony in D minor, Op. 21 was included in the inaugural concert of the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra in 1901.) In 1905 he went to America to head the piano department of the new Institute of Musical Art (a forerunner of the Juilliard School of Music) and thereafter he made his home in New York. From around the period of the First World War he effectively ceased to compose and devoted himself to teaching and performance.

Extractions: Stojowski, with handwritten music quotation, ca. 1910. Thanks to the generosity of Henry Stojowski and his family, the has been donated to the Polish Music Center at USC. Having battled delays in its travels across the U.S, the Collection finally arrived safe and sound on 27 December 2004. The Collection includes manuscripts and personal papers of the great Polish romantic composer, Sigismond Stojowski (1870-1946). The Polish Music Center welcomes the opportunity to popularize this beautiful but little known music. To learn more about this fascinating composer, visit our Polish Music Journal of Winter 2002, vol. 5, no. 2 PMHS VOL 8 NOW AVAILABLE! A Well-researched Study of a Long-forgotten Composer Among the list of Polish composers of the inter-war era, the name Józef Koffler does not readily come to mind. Yet, during the late 1920s and the 1930s, his music was well known and frequently performed throughout Poland and Europe. Koffler's historic significance lies in the fact that he was the first Polish composer to apply Schoenberg's twelve-note technique in his opus and to do so in a strikingly original way, successfully combining folk elements and neo-classical forms throughout his small but fascinating catalogue of compositions.

Extractions: Zygmunt (Sigismond or Sigismund; other names: Denis Antoni de Jourdan) Stojowski was a Polish composer, pianist, teacher, music critic active in Poland, France and the U.S. He was born in Strzelce, on 4 May 1870 (though the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians lists a wrong date of birth) and died in New York, on 5 November 1946. Stojowski studied composition with ¯eleñski in Kraków and, after leaving Poland at the age of 17, became a student of piano (Lou Diémer) and Leo Delibes (composition) at the Paris Conservatoire. He belongs to a small group of piano students of Paderewski, with whom he was linked by a life-long friendship. In 1905, he moved to the U.S. to concertize and teach piano performance (New York Institute of Musical Art, Von Ende School of Music, Juilliard School of Music, Stojowski Studios). Stojowski composed numerous pieces for piano, chamber and orchestral music. His best-known compositions are: a symphony (in D minor, awarded a prize at a Paderewski Competition in 1898, premiered at the first concert of the Warsaw Philharmonic), cantata Spring (played at the Buckingam palace), two piano concerti, a violin concerto, two sonatas each for violin and cello with piano, and

Naxos) ****: Having been unfamiliar with the playing of Cuban virtuoso Juana Zayas, I had no prejudices when I auditioned yet another traversal of Schubert's last sonata (1828) and his popular 1827 set of impromptus. Both facile and intimate, these are masterful renditions that seem tailor-made for the salon experience, those contemporary Schubertiads that persist among music lovers. Zayas pays particular attention to the number of Schubert's pianissimo indications to a remarkable degree, and she can speed up in gradations of fluid tempo without increasing dynamic pressure. Those raised on the heaven-storming renditions a la Richter will find in Zayas more of Schnabel's tender spirit. In fact, I cannot recall hearing such an Apollinian approach, especially to the long, singing figures in the last movement, since I heard Lorin Hollander play this great work at SUNY Binghamton back in 1971. The Impromptus balance the lyrical elements and the sense of an evolving form, an improvised engagement between player and instrument, this a Hamburg Steinway captured in 2002. Piano sound reproduction is quite strong, with none of the obtrusive ping I often find in piano recordings. Good midrange, quite poignant in the 'cello' melody of the A-flat Impromptu. The C Minor has an especial lilt that may sell the disc by itself. While I am not going to abandon my Artur Schnabel, Eduard Erdmann, or Edwin Fischer versions of these works, I am going to recommend Zayas as a sensitive, conscientious artist of first rank.
