Though the name of Copland is one that will appear if you ask any average group of music lovers for a quick list of American composers he features here in unfamiliar guise. As for Creston he is no household name and Mark Zuckerman is a complete unknown. Elements of atonality skim through or propel most of this music. Let's take the Copland Fantasy first. This is one unbroken span of almost half an hour's duration. While fantasy form allows the composer more scope than strict sonata it is still an uphill task to sustain interest over such a reach. Copland's language is dodecaphonic - a road he set down first with his Piano Quartet (1950). Why such a step-change? Copland seems rather to have been driven into this line by his terror of repeating himself. When Schuman asked in 1951 for a major work for the Juilliard's 50th celebrations Copland set to with this work. A collegiate inspiration was the pianism of William Kapell and the two impetuses flowed together. In 1953 Kapell was killed in an air crash and the

Extractions: Phoenix USA PHCD149 Total time: 74:31 Summary for the Busy Executive : Terrific explorations of terrae incognitae I've praised Peter Vinograde's playing and musicianship before when I reviewed a CD of music by Nicolas Flagello ( Albany 234 ). Here, he tackles two acknowledged masterpieces, both by Copland, and three unknown works. I'll tackle the Creston and Zuckerman first. Creston's Seven Theses will probably shock those who know items like the marimba concertino or the Symphony #2. The work lies far closer, at least in its harmonic thought, to American Modernism (say, Copland's music of the Twenties) than to what we might expect from familiar Creston - diatonic chords leavened with major sevenths and ninths. The work - a series of short mood studies - stems from 1933, and it shows Creston in the process of finding his composing self. It's apparently a more conscious act than people realize. The muse may descend, but she tends to do so to people who are already working their behinds off. It will take Creston a few years to hit on his characteristic sound, but he does hit it. Metamorphoses , a variation set, comes from the early Sixties, after Creston's music had begun to sink into oblivion. Part of it was the times. Young composers had once again symbolically killed their musical fathers to pursue mainly Webern's brand of serialism. Creston was by no means alone: a lot of wonderful music got crammed into a dark, forgotten corner of the closet, along with the 16mm family films. Composers like Creston were caught between a rock and a hard place. Their music was anathema to the zealots on both sides of the aisle - the terminally traditional and the terminally cool. If anyone was going to do Creston, it was going to be the new-music crowd, but those guys were essentially distracted by bright shiny objects. In
Classical Net Review - Flagello - Credendum, Piano Concerti, Etc. The Albany disc misses this very high mark only slightly, mostly due to pianistPeter vinograde, a pianist of great intelligence and fiery temperament. http://66.39.27.242/music/recs/reviews/a/alb00234a.html
Extractions: Albany Records TROY234 Flagello spent almost all his career at the Manhattan School of Music, and the Albany disc represents somewhat of a tribute from his colleagues there. Both Nagata and Vinograde currently serve on the faculty. As to the Vox performers, David Amos has done yeoman's work reviving music by American neo-Romantics and traditionalist mavericks, and I'm happy to see a star like Oliveira taking an interest in music he'll probably make no money from (although he too connects to Flagello through his studies at the Manhattan School). However, the prime mover of these discs seems to be their producer, Walter Simmons, a long-time Flagello champion and whose advocacy I first encountered in the early Seventies, a particularly inhospitable time to put forward conservative, tonal composers. The conservative vs. radical fight, usually expressed as tonality vs. 12-tone serialism, produced half-truths on both sides that, despite history, common sense, and the willingness to hear, continue to be put forward. As with most polemics, the object is to win and to stake out turf, not really to arrive at a truthful or a just appreciation. It turned out that the fight was largely irrelevant to the future, just like the 19
