Classical Net - Beethoven Piano Sonatas: Overview Of Recordings He was the first pianist to record all 32 sonatas, back in the 1930s. murray perahia s new Sony recording of Beethoven s first three sonatas (Opus 2) http://www.classical.net/music/comp.lst/articles/beethoven/psonatas.html
Extractions: Piano Sonatas: An Overview of Selected Recordings By Ron Drummond [The following survey of Beethoven sonata recordings, written in 1996, was never intended to be comprehensive. It was meant as a survey of selected recordings. There were numerous famous recordings that I deliberately chose not to include, some because they were already known quantities and others because at the time I was not yet sufficiently familiar with them to comment. The recordings I did survey struck me then, and still strike me now, as being important and significant and worthy of your consideration. Ron Drummond, 9/23/04] Any complete recording of a cycle as diverse as Beethoven's is going to be uneven, period. You will not find a be-all end-all. Nevertheless, I do think it's useful to have a complete recording by one artist, for the insights a single, refined sensibility can bring to Beethoven across the full range of his sonatas. But one should also consider supplementing a complete recording with additional recordings of individual sonatas by various performers. Of complete sets, I highly recommend Richard Goode on Elektra/Nonesuch. Goode has been praised in almost all quarters as perhaps the finest surveyor of Beethoven's sonatas since Schnabel. He has all the chops and a wealth of feeling and insight to convey. The recording is state of the art. Though superb throughout, Goode is at his best in Sonatas 12-18.

Extractions: Murray Perahia (born April 19 ) is a distinguished American concert pianist of Sephardic origin. He is also a respected conductor Murray Perahia Awards and Recognitions ... edit edit Perahia was born in New York City , and began playing the piano at four (he claims he didn't start practising seriously until the age of 15). At the age of seventeen, he attended Mannes College , where he studied keyboard, conducting, and composition with his teacher and mentor MieczysÅaw Horszowski . During the summer, he also attended Marlboro , where he studied with Rudolf Serkin , and Pablo Casals , amongst others. In , he won the fourth Leeds Piano Competition , helping to cement its reputation for advancing the careers of young pianistic talent. Dr. Fanny Waterman recalls anecdotally (in Wendy Thompson's book Piano Competition: The Story of the Leeds ) that Horszowski had phoned her prior to the competition, announcing that he would enter the winner. Other American contestants had apparently withdrawn their applications upon hearing that Perahia would be competing. In he worked with Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears at the Aldeburgh Festival . He became co-artistic director in , stepping down in Perahia famously held a close acquaintance with an elder Vladimir Horowitz , who had a defining influence on his pianism.

Extractions: Yet, although satisfied, I was never moved by Perahia's versions. I felt that I'd heard it all before. As an example, hearing the beginning of the 2nd English Suite, my mind wandered to the Woody Allen movie, Crimes and Misdemeanors. Sometimes, I thought of Schiff's recordings on London. I simply did not find anything truely distinctive or unique.
Extractions: As an obsessive audiophile with a reverence for Beethoven, one of the most troubling aspects was a lack of consistency when drifting from one Concerto to another. When presented with a complete collection by a masterful artist (at a most affordable price) I was easily tempted to purchase the CD set. Consistency is the key here. Tone, timbre, touch, all consistent. Murray Perahia has an extraordinary touch - expressive, gentle, forceful, in all the right places. His reputation as one of Beethoven's best interpreters is well-earned. He shines, and with each note the listener is elated, teary-eyed, lost in revelry or simply going along for a wonderful ride.
