Extractions: IN 1991, MURRAY PERAHIA WAS HAILED as the "poet priest" of the piano. He seemed on his way into the ranks of the Great Pianists and then he got a paper cut. He ignored R at first. But his thumb swelled up, triggering four years of misdiagnoses, failed operations and aborted comebacks. Perahia couldn't sleep, much less play. He fen into depression. "The pain was enormous, even when I wasn't playing," he says. "Even when I was just normal-just sitting down-I was always in pain." Absurd rumors abounded in classical-music circles. He'd had a nervous breakdown. No, he'd hurt himself opening a jar of pickles. No, it was all Horowitz's fault. He'd made Perahia, a traditionalist, venture into riskier repertoire that must have caused the injury- a Mozartian felled by Liszt.

Extractions: Full Review Over the past thirty years, there has been a revival of interest in the keyboard works of Handel and Scarlatti. Bearing in mind that most people knew Handel and Scarlatti's works only through a few pieces and not as a whole, this new renaissance has truly rewarded those of us who have wanted to hear more works than the usual ones that are played in recital all over the world. Murray Perahia has been a pianist for whom I have a great deal of respect and admiration. He has recorded much of the classical repertoire including the complete piano concertos of Mozart and most of the keyboard music of Chopin. He is a pianist who commands both a great deal of lyricism and a tremendous amount of virtuosity. In a certain sense, he manages to combine both fire and ice in his playing to produce recordings and concerts that are treasured by listeners and classical music lovers all over the world.

Extractions: On the particular piece 'Improvisations on la Folia' is said at the same page: We have no surviving 16th-century choreography for the Folia melody, which was widely known and popular for almost three centuries. Dancers may improvise, as musicians love to do, to the haunting little strain or simply to its bass. You do not have to be a musicologist or a great analyser of 16th Century dances to recognize instantly in 'improvisations on la Folia' the later Folia-theme which was introduced (ok, i make an exception for Falconieri ) by Lully in 1672. The subtitle 'flowers of the 16th Century Italian Dance Music' is absolutely incorrect. I wonder what kind of dance is picked for this Baroque music pur sang and clearly intended for a listening audience the delicate way it is played. However the Folia theme (a nice blending of the Gallot and Ruiz de Ribayaz ) sounds great on the Chitaronne.

The advice he received was to add two movements to make the work into a concerto. Schumann evidently didnt take immediately to the advice, because it took him four years finally to add the two movements. Chopin in performance JOHN RINK discusses aspects of Chopin interpretation with the international concert-pianist Murray Perahia MY FIRST CONVERSATION with the concert-pianist Murray Perahia took place many years ago; the most recent occurred at his London home on 3 July 2000. This article presents excerpts from our discussion that day. It was unplanned and unscripted, although an intrinsic logic seems to have prevailed. We started by considering Chopin editions and sources, period instruments, and musical content. We then turned to matters of form and sound and their role in building an interpretation. This led to a discussion at the piano about two movements from Chopin's Sonata in B minor op.58 and Scherzo op.31, both of which had featured in Perahia's concert programmes that season. Topics ranging from tempo to musical narration were broached in this fascinating recital of ideas by one of the world's leading pianists.)
