Extractions: The Wonder of the Duo-Art This is the first in a series of articles on the Duo-Art piano. Later issues of this magazine will contain articles by Ignaz Jan Paderewski, Josef Hofmann and others who will discuss the Duo-Art from an educational and cultural standpoint. The article this month was written by Mr. Deems Taylor, music critic of the New York World, and originally appeared in a recent Sunday edition of that paper. This 4-page article indicates the magazine is about the same size as National Geographic, similarly bound with two staples, published on a pale peach colored paper of high quality. The article has no header, footer, nor page number to verify that it did indeed come from Harper's New Monthly. While the article does contain a text advertisement at its end, it does appear to have been a featured series, 1 per month. Doug Henderson recalls the article and believes it may have been as many as 8 parts over 8 months. I'm trying to gather the other parts of this article, number unknown. I've been poking around on the 'Net for sources and/or discussion about this kind of ephemera, but have found nothing so far.
HYPERION The Romantic Piano Concerto Ignacy jan paderewski (18601941) Piano Concerto in A minor Op. 17 (1888) ignaz BRÜLL (1846-19 07) Piano Concerto No.1 in F Op.10 (first recording) http://www.musicweb-international.com/Themed_releases/Hyperion_piano/Roamantic_P
Extractions: Since 1991, Hyperion has been releasing Piano Concerto recordings of lesser known composers. Most issues have more that one work on them, and in some cases, works by different composers have been produced. They have collectiviely been released in "The Romantic Piano Concerto Series" and the latest issue is Volume 25. In most of the items so far released, the Hyperion issue is the only way you will have of buying these somewhat obscure, but nevertheless interesting works. Where there is an alternative version available, you will not lose out by purchasing the Hyperion version as all of them are extremely good performances, usually better than the competition, offer high value for money, and will give the listener much pleasure.

Pauline Lightstone Donalda - Biographies - The Virtual Gramophone Along with musicians like Enrico Caruso, pianist and composer ignaz jan Paderewskiand violinist Mischa Elman, Donalda performed in the homes of http://www.collectionscanada.ca/gramophone/m2-1055.2-e.html
Extractions: Source In 1904, Pauline Donalda debuted in the title role of Jules Massenet's Manon , at the Casino Municipal in Nice After two years of study, Donalda had an opportunity to audition for her first opera role. It was the title role for Jules Massenet's opera . Those present at the audition, including Massenet, were greatly impressed by Donalda's performance, but they were reluctant to cast an unknown singer in a lead role. Accordingly, they offered her 7000 francs to be the understudy. Determined to accept only leading roles, Donalda rejected their offer. Soon after, she was approached by the same group and offered the title role in Manon . Massenet, himself, coached Donalda for this production. At the age of 22, Pauline Donalda made her operatic debut as Manon at the Casino Municipal in Nice. A review in Le Phare du littoral described Donalda's first professional endeavour on the operatic stage. "Pauline Donalda dared to appear for the first time before the public in the role of Manon. On a stage where so many Manons have been applauded and feted. On a stage where mediocrity is unknown and where good enough is considered not enough. Only Pauline Donalda could have had that boldness and succeed. She possesses an unusually exquisite physique; a strong, brilliant, flexible and wide-ranged voice; a finesse and intelligence underlined by remarkable acting and sparkling eyes that open to life or are full of love."

Jim Webb composed the song and actor Richard Harris recorded it as part of "A Tramp Shining," an album consisting solely of Webb songs in January 1968. Released as a single of over seven minutes playing time, "MacArthur Park" became a massive international hit. It was awarded a Grammy for Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s) of 1968. Elvis sang a few lines of "MacArthur Park" during the taping of the 1968 NBC TV Special. Though not officially released, this extract can be heard on an unofficial recording.
