Extractions: Denver Post, 19 November 1997 Despite the Three Tenors and the emergence of a bevy of fine mezzo-sopranos, we certainly do not live in a Golden Age of singing. More accurately, we're in the midst of a plastic-coated aluminum age of the Golden Reissue. There's never been a time when more dead singers and musicians could be heard in your living room. Why is it happening? CDs are cheap to produce, but living artists require fees and royalties. Dead ones don't, and their arias and sonatas sit in the archives awaiting resurrection. So every major label is turning to reissues, from Deutsche Grammophon's complete 87-disc Beethoven Edition to Pearl's 12-CD Covent Garden on Record and RCA's 65-album Heifetz Collection. In most cases, reissues involve the digital remastering of 78 rpm recordings dating back as far as 1900 with tin-pan sonics and scratchy surface noise.

"Putting together an audience and performance is like orchestrating a successful banquet." As a one-time professional chef, Randall should know. But with more than 200 events a year to schedule in Alexander and Taplin auditoriums, he scarcely has time to crack a cookbook these days. Out of a white-siding building tucked behind a service station on Alexander Street, he manages the Friends of Music at Princeton and Princeton University Concerts, as well as parceling out space to other groupsfrom on campus and off, and not always musical. Randall just completed arrangements for the 2000-'01 concert season, and he and the program committee have already begun work on engaging artists for 2001-'02. When he started doing the job in 1988, there were 10 University concerts and "about 15 Friends of Music concerts," Randall recalls. Since then, "the University Concerts has added jazz and world music to its formerly all-classical mix, as well as the Richardson Chamber Players, for some 16 programs a year. And with the inauguration of the Music Department's Certificate Program in Musical Performance, the number of Friends concerts has grown to more than 50."

Polish Music Journal 4.1.01 - Paderewski: Tempo Rubato by Ignacy jan paderewski. Chapter 28 in Success in Music and How it is Won by by Moriz Rosenthal, ignaz Friedman, and ignaz jan paderewski, (DMA thesis, http://www.usc.edu/dept/polish_music/PMJ/issue/4.1.01/paderewskirubato.html
Extractions: Editor's Introduction: The subject of tempo rubato was particularly dear to Ignacy Jan Paderewski and he discussed it in a number of speeches. Two texts about tempo rubato appeared during his life-time. The essay reprinted here was first published in Henry T. Finck, Success in Music and How it is Won (New York: Charles Scribner's Sons , 1909; reprinted in 1927). The title page advertised that the chapter on tempo rubato was written by Paderewski; it is chapter 28, entitled "Paderewski on Tempo Rubato" and found on pp. 454-461. Another version of Paderewski's lecture on tempo rubato appeared in 1910 in S³owo polskie (vol. 15 no. 491). Scottish composer, Ronald Stevenson, previously edited this chapter for publication as "Tempo rubato: The Best Way to Study the Piano," in The Paderewski Paradox/Le paradoxe Paderewski (Lincoln: Klavar Music Foundation, 1992: 25-32); the text appears in English and French translation in this bi-lingual volume. Stevenson also wrote a preface for this article (pp. 19-24) and a general note on Paderewski's rubato, "The Paderewski Paradox" (3-18). Other studies of Paderewski's
Extractions: DDD "This is another superb disc in Nimbus' Grand Piano series, compiled with breathtaking skill from piano-rolls. The central item is Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. I heard this artist play the work at the Royal Albert Hall in those palmy days when pianists were not ashamed to be personalities with something personal to say. Sometimes the results were idiosyncratic, but on this disc the performances have fidelity, tonal glory and just that touch of individuality which should always mark a true musician. Above all, the playing has unremitting grandeur. This is big treatment of a programme that shows the great man at his best ... this is a golden record of a golden age. Buy it all costs." Extractions: This batch of player piano roll scan files once again benefits from the Law of Unforeseen Consequences in a very positive way. Again, to my continuing surprise, more people have contacted me quite unexpectedly and kindly offered rolls for scanning, either as an outright gift, or on loan. These gift rolls are included within this batch. Special thanks go to Larry Fletcher (again), Eli Shahur, and Ben Roth for rolls they have contributed to this preservation project. All very much appreciated. Within this batch can be found a group of roll scans from another roll scanner built by Kevin Keymer. Slowly but surely, the word is spreading and more people are becoming interested in building roll scanners. The need to preserve their content is becoming recognized on a broader scale. Within a year, I perceive several additional roll scanners will be in operation and this library will grow even larger. If by chance there are others out there inclined to contribute piano rolls to this preservation project, they would be most welcome. It matters not that these rolls might have torn or missing leaders, may have broken or missing spool ends, may have ragged edges, may not have their original boxes or labels, etc. The only real concern is about rolls whose leaders are missing into the music perforations, at which point they have little or no value to anybody. I would ask that you contact me personally at smythe@shaw.ca
