The program contains three violin-piano sonatas by Grieg (1843—1907): "Sonata No. 1 in F Major," "Sonata No. 2 in G Major" and "Sonata No. 3 in C Minor." Grieg, one of the foremost lyrical composers of all time, utilizes folk elements of his Norwegian homeland in a romantic style that is both accessible and engaging. Owings is on the music faculty of Texas Christian University. The Owings-Gearhart Duo was formed in 1989, and their continuing musical collaboration recently produced a 1998 compact disc of the music of Quincy Porter on the Koch International Classics label.

He has performed as a pianist, conductor and choral singer, and has adjudicated several music competitions, most recently the Degrado Memorial Competition for the past 3 years. Extractions: The nationally-acclaimed KC Piano Ensemble is comprised of eight pianists who play keyboards that are capable of producing up to 600 different sounds. This allows the group to sound like a philharmonic orchestra, a jazz combo, or a "retro-rock" band. KC Piano Ensembles have performed at the National Piano Teachers Institute at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, the Texas Music Teachers' Convention in Corpus Christi, the Music Teacher's National Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah, the Henderson Women's Forum, and various "Red Hat Society" programs and conventions throughout the state. Mrs Siler has been invited to present an ensemble at the 2005 Music Teachers' National Convention in Seattle, Washington and the National Piano Pedagogy Conference in Chicago, Illinois. The Red Hat Keyboard Supreme's are a group of eight talented musicians who perform on keyboards capable of producing up to 200 different sounds-ranging from orchestral instruments such as strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion to non-traditional sounds such as barking dogs, gunshots, thunder claps, and much more! The group began in 1998 when Sandra Siler, Head of Piano Instruction at Kilgore College, offered area piano teachers the opportunity to come together weekly to play piano ensemble music. Two of the current group members, Jo Denson and Patsy Cato, were among that pioneer group. Members have come and gone, but after several successful public performances, Siler had to begin a waiting list. When the group became members of the "Red Hat Society" they decided to call themselves "Supreme's" because like the Supreme Court-they are members for life! The group rehearses weekly for two hours and performs often.

You stated also in the pre-interview that music has always been a part of your life. Could discuss what music was like for you at home while you were growing up? Owings: I guess it probably had more to do with going to church than anything else. My grandmother sang in her church choir, and so I would hear her choir, I would hear music at church. And then in the early days, without television and some of the other kinds of entertainment, a lot of churches gave concerts. Also at my church, a Methodist Church, we had what was called the Epworth League, which was an organization for young people. Catawba College Music Department Presents Free Piano Concert The Catawba College Music Department presents a free concert open to the public with Pianist Jesse Davis at 7 p.m. Saturday, February 5 at Keppel Auditorium in the Robertson College-Community Center. A native of North Carolina, Jesse Davis has performed with orchestras and given numerous solo recitals in the United States and Europe. He is the winner of the 2001 Vienna International Pianists Academy "Rosario Marciano Sonderpreis," the 1998 GMTA Competition, the 1995 NCSA "A. J. Fletcher Competition," the 1995 Raleigh Symphony Young Artist Competition, and the 1995 N.C. MTNA Yamaha Competition. He was awarded a Semifinalist Prize at the 2004 New Orleans International Piano Competition and holds prizes from the 1998 French Piano Institute and the 1991 Winston-Salem Symphony Young Artist Competition as well. Currently, he studies privately with Fabio Bidini and recently completed the International Certificate for Piano Artists 2003-2004 through the Ecole Normale de Musique "Alfred Cortot" in Paris, the Foundation Bell'arte in Brussels and the University of Florida, College of Fine Arts. Through this program Davis received personal training from Jerome Lowenthal, Boaz Sharon and Nelson Delle-Vigne, as well as masterclasses from Philippe Entremont and Lazar Berman.

Extractions: The Cleveland Competition is very difficult. The Robert Casadesus Society and the Cleveland Institute of Music founded this competition in 1975 to honor the memory of the great French pianist, Robert Casadesus who had close ties with George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra. A screening committee reviewed 220 audio tapes and documentation of pianists ages 19-32 from around the world. They invited 61 pianists to perform at the 1999 Cleveland International Competition. Antonio Pompa-Baldi became the prize winner after four rounds of playing which took place August 8 to August 14. At the end of the first round, only 16 advanced. Every subsequent round reduced the candidates by half. Phillippe Bianconi, a Van Cliburn Silver Medalist, who performed here in 1986, was a winner of the Cleveland Competition in 1981. Other finalists among the many who have had successful careers have included Sergei Babayan, Benedetto Lupo, Neil Rutman, Edward Newman, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Angela Hewitt, John Owings and Per Tengstrand of Sweden, the 1997 winner.

Extractions: Lauren Anderson is currently studying piano performance at the University of New Mexico with Professor Falko Steinbach. Since beginning her studies with Professor in 2001, she has traveled abroad (Germany and Italy) to participate in master classes and perform in concert. She received a musicianship scholarship. Ms. Anderson will represent the state of New Mexico in the Division Level of the Young Artists Music Teachers National Association Competition this coming January in Long Beach, California, as she did last year as well. He studied psychology, specializing in the effects of music on the mentally disturbed. He also studied photography and became an expert portrait photography. During WWII he help Jews in France escape the Nazis. After the fall of France, he joined the U. S. Army Air Corps and was sent to the South Pacific to work with the native islanders. Injured by a bomb blast he gradually lost his sight, becoming totally blind by 1947. During his blindness he wrote his two major novels The Devil Rides Outside and Nuni as well as numerous short stories. In 1951 he became a Roman Catholic. Much like the smell of apple pie baking reminds you of your mothers cooking, Conns songs cue the memory of things seemingly lost, but not forgotten. "If I Were King," is Conns political, philosophical, "If I dont say it soon, Im gonna scream," answer to the narrow-mindedness in the current entertainment/political landscape. "Somebody Gotta Make a Move," is a groove pocket, slow burn, funky grind that rolls into Memphis like the midnight blues express. "All The Kings Horses," tells a story of modern heartbreak wrapped in medieval images. "Down on Rigolette," is a gothic tale of family skeletons and dire consequences. "Comfort Me," evokes a haunting, bluesy, heart-achy, been there before one too many times , feeling. "Ive Got Your Dog," and "Polishing Chrome" are life lesson stories put to music, and "Beautiful," is the superbly recanted story about one womans dark struggle against her brutal relationship. All of Conns songs are well-crafted, intelligent and derived from a maturity and artistry that few writers attain. It is abundantly obvious that Conn is passionate about his craft. The backing musicians are some of Nashvilles finest: Kenny Vaughn (guitar), Dave Francis (bass), Bryan Owings (drums), and the lovely Carmella Ramsey (backing vocals). Longtime friend and guitar virtuoso Sonny Landreth adds his own style of soulful, burning slide guitar to round out the musical circle.
