Miller Theatre utterances of Takemitsu and Messiaen. chitose okashiro, a stunning young pianist, will bring her command of color to these very inward, intimate works. http://www.millertheater.com/list.html
Extractions: Miller Theatre opens its season with a major celebration of composer Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990). Perhaps the most important American musician of the 20th century, Bernstein's legacy as a conductor and Broadway composer continues to expand. Fourteen years after his death, many of his serious concert hall works are still little-known and underappreciated. The force of Bernstein's musical personality was such that he could write in many styles with the ease of a native speaker, and yet never lose his singular voice. From his early violin concerto Serenade to the late opera A Quiet Place (which has until now never been performed in New York!), this celebratory evening offers a chance to give a fresh hearing to one of America's greatest composers.

Extractions: Francine Kay Named Recitalist for the Pro Piano New York Recital Series 2000! Seemingly incapable of playing a single "ugly" note, Canadian Pianist Francine Kay has been named recitalist for The Pro Piano (www.propiano.com) New York Recital Series 2000. The blind jury (standard procedure at The Pro Piano Auditions) was mesmerized and awestruck by Miss Kay's vastly beautiful tone structures and her color-laden chordal balances that seemed resplendent with miraculous creative powers. It is fair to say that the jurors dreaded the end of Miss Kay's audition...so wonderfully engaging and captivating in nature was the musical trance she created. In the seven years since the innovative and extremely unorthodox competition's inception, the blind jury has heard but two other pianists who demonstrated such musically startling profundity: Chitose Okashiro (I993,) and J.Y. Soniz (I994.) Francine Kay will appear in recital at the Carnegie Recital Hall on November 7, 2000. The blind jury (standard procedure at The Pro Piano Auditions) will of course be in attendance at said recital. If the jury continues to be aptly impressed, Miss Kay will then be named Pro Piano 2000 Artist of the Year, and will be signed to a recording contract with Pro Piano Records...the de facto home of classical piano recording.

SoundStage! Chitose Okashiro - Wagner Piano Transcriptions chitose okashiro succeeds quite nicely, thank you. Playing the transcriptions of Kocsis Pro Piano and chitose okashiro have created a winner here. http://www.soundstage.com/music/reviews/rev355.htm
Extractions: johnc@soundstage.com Musical Performance Recording Quality Overall Enjoyment Chitose Okashiro succeeds quite nicely, thank you. Playing the transcriptions of Kocsis ("Einleitung" from Tristan and Islode ), Moszkowski ("Isoldens Tad" from Tristan ... and "Der Venusberg" from Tannhauser ) and Brassin ("Der Ritt der Walkuren," "Feuerzauber" and "Sigmunds Liebesgesang" from Der Ring des Nibelungen ), Ms. Okashiro infuses these pieces with all the passion and expression that Wagner must have had in mind when he wrote them. Despite the fact that this recording is of solo piano, one can almost close one's eyes and see the action on the stage. Ms. Okashiro uses all of the piano's expressiveness, power and delicacy to bring these pieces to life. For example, "Isoldens Tod" ("Isolde's Death") may very well be one of, if not the, most well-known pieces in the Wagnerian opus. Ms. Okashiro's playing of the Moskowski transcription neither eviscerates the piece nor over-embellishes it. Its obvious that she understands the work completely. But her familiarity with Wagner is only one of this disc's qualities that commands our attention. The other is the sound. Nonetheless, both musically and sonically, this is a disc that can hold its own in the exalted company of original recordings of full orchestral versions of the pieces. Pro Piano and Chitose Okashiro have created a winner here.
