Extractions: Something tasted funny in the middle of "Belshazzar's Feast." In a performance of William Walton's oratorio with the Boston Symphony last spring, a soprano jumped the gun at a key entrance. Afterward, a few singers said, in pass-the-buck style, "Well, the cue wasn't very clear." Grant Llewellyn, who had just been named music director of the N.C. Symphony, was the conductor, and when the same tricky spot arrived at the next performance, he crouched, covered his baton in his sleeves and smiled at the chorus as if to say, "Watch me! Come in early this time, and no one can say it was my fault!" It takes presence of mind to make a joke in the middle of a performance, especially a joke that is gently self-deprecating, and still be effective. But Llewellyn isn't like other conductors. His style is a lively mixture of wit and point. (Who would have wanted to see the look on the face of the great maestro Arturo Toscanini at the same moment? It would have been all point.) The incident suggests a few fundamental things about the art of conducting: It's unpredictable, it's visible, it's a mystery. We audience members are in the dark about most of what goes on between the orchestra and the man or woman leading them. We don't sit in when the conductor studies the score and decides on tempo or dynamics or accent. We're not there in rehearsal, when the real work goes on. And during performances, we see only the broad gestures, from the back.

Extractions: or browse by year Increase story text size Decrease story text size Print story Frederick Delius: Arrangement for Piano 4 Hands by Peter Warlock. Noriko Ogawa and Kathryn Stott. BIS CD-1347. Born of German parentage in Bradford, Yorkshire, Frederick Delius was to become one of the great English composers. He spent much of his adult life abroad. He grew oranges in Florida, USA and studied in Virginia, but, wanting to make music the appeal of faming didn't last for long and in 1886, at the age of 24, he won approval from his father to study music in Leipzig. Delius was not a great composer of music for the piano. Indeed, he only wrote a handful of pieces and used the instrument sparingly in his other works. The man who helped make Delius and the piano a pair was Philip Heseltine, who worked under the name of Peter Warlock.
