Extractions: @import url(/resources/css/mu/styles_new.css); home print Events Behind the Scenes Broadcast Sites Partner Sites BIOGRAPHIES Kathryn Stott Kathryn Stott is one of Britain's most versatile and respected musicians. As a pianist, whether performing a new commission, making music with like- minded friends, recording unusual works or exploring repertoire beyond the normal Western classical piano tradition, she is committed to sharing her enthusiasm with as wide an audience as possible. Engagements as a concerto soloist with orchestras throughout Britain and Europe, the Far East and Australia, are combined with recital and chamber music activities with a refreshingly varied circle of collaborators, taking her to major music centres throughout the world. Current and forthcoming engagements include a recital tour of Europe and the Far East with her longtime friend and colleague, Yo-Yo Ma; appearances with the Lindsays, Janine Jansen and Christian Poltera in the UK and Europe, besides tours of Japan with Noriko Ogawa and the USA with Truls Mørk. The critically acclaimed premiere of Graham Fitkin's Circuit for two pianos, with the BBC Philharmonic, is a highlight of her piano duo partnership with Noriko Ogawa. In July 2004 they gave the Japanese premiere with the Tokyo Philharmonic and Myung-Whun Chung in Suntory Hall. As a result of Kathryn Stott's interest in contemporary music several composers have written for her, including most recently Julian Josephs and a commission by the Concertgebouw for a piano trio by Graham Fitkin. She has given the first performances of new works by many of today's leading composers: Michael Nyman's Piano Concerto, Maxwell Davies's Piano Concerto, and Marc Yeats's The Round and Square Art of Memory, as well as the British premiere of The Four Parables by Paul Schoenfield.

Extractions: Notes: This is a real curiosity. There have been many piano arrangements of Beethoven Symphonies, most notably those by the master of the piano reduction, Franz Liszt. But while Liszt's arrangement of the 'Choral Symphony' is for piano alone, here we have a version of the Ninth executed by the teenage Richard Wagner with the orchestra reduced to solo piano but the vocal forces left intact. Pianist Noriko Ogawa makes the most of youthful Wagner's fanciful recreation in the first three movements. She is then joined by an effective and well-balanced team of soloists who are, in turn, backed by Masaaki Suzuki and his wonderful Bach Collegium Japan Chorus. The Collegium is renowned for their Bach Cantata recordings, and here they light the fires of a one-of-a-kind "Ode to Joy."

Later in the same month he returned to the Lot Valley in France for master classes and recitals there (similar to his July 2003 trip). Many more reviews and articles have appeared, notably in the International Piano Quarterly and Piano Magazine. This new disc was recorded in Decemeber 2003 and features most of the music McLachlan performed at his critically acclaimed Wigmore Hall debut on 4 January 2004. The central work is the massive 39 minute Chisholm Sonata, written in 1939 and sub-titled 'An Riobain Dearg'. Both this work and the much shorter Ronald Stevenson 'Threepenny Sonatina' ,after themes from Weill's opera, receive world premieres on this disc. Also included are performances of Ferruccio Busoni's monumental 'Fantasia Contrappuntistica', Sorabji's contrasted 'Fantasiettina sul nome illustdell'Egregio poeta Hugh MacDiarmid ossia Christopher Grieve MCMLXI' and 'With Drums and Pipes' from Bela Bartok's 'Out of doors' Suite. All in all, a veritable 'phonorama' of Erik Chisholm and his extraordinary circle.

Extractions: Sometimes its a privilege to be in a place where music is made. Not always of course; its easy to become blasé, sitting in a concert hall or at a gig, your mind drifting around every subject except the music until we all applaud politely and leave. But today Tasmin Little played Bachs 2 nd Partita for solo violin, and God was in the house. There was nothing in that room but the music; I wasnt there, neither were any other members of the audience, neither was the artist or the composer, just the music. Someone said they had timed the performance at 40 minutes, but time wasnt there either it had slipped from the room. When it rushed back in again at the end, the applause was stunned and muted; one woman gave a quiet and brief standing ovation, but the natural reaction was awe. I was speechless and close to tears, and I cant explain why. Being an English audience of course, we chatted afterwards about how she is able to play without a score, and how tired she must be, the duration of the performance and whether there was an interval or not. There was, and I needed all twenty minutes of it to collect myself together again.
