Extractions: contacts Nottingham Evening Post William Ruff Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano Concerto. Pianist -Noriko Ogawa I remember the days when you had to be given permission from the vicar just to applaud in church. On Saturday night the audience had no inhibitions about standing and cheering - not surprising when the playing of Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano Concerto was as electric as Noriko Ogawa's. Despite her eminence and celebrity she has remained loyal to St. Mary's over many years, and in her hands this most popular of concertos seemed new-minted. With both power and poetry she inflected one theme after another with a yearning, bitterwseet intensity. From the opening chords to the rapturous maestoso ending this was a performance which rekindled a sense of wonder at the work's power to excite and move. As one would expect from a concert conducted by (and celebrating) John Keys, nothing about it could be called 'ordinary'. The concerto unusually stood alone in the second half of a programme which had already demonstrated the versitility of the orchestra - equally convincing in some sprightly Handel as they were in their fresh, vital playing of Elgar's Seranade.
Extractions: Amazon recommendations This disc heralds the beginning of a project to record the complete piano music of Debussy, one of the great challenges for a pianist. And Noriko Ogawa most assuredly sets her standard here, which places her as a leading exponent of this music, surely the greatest piano music of the 20th century. It is a remarkable achievement, not least because she is so young. But by every standard of Debussy playing - subtlety, atmosphere, phrasing, shading, precision - she is excellent. Her attention to the composer's carefully expressed instructions resounds to the music's details with due care and attention, with the result that the performances achieve a special insight. The very opening of the programme reflects these particular strengths, and is really compelling.
Extractions: Acclaimed in Paris, London, Sydney and Tokyo since 1993, Cassard's musical feat has stood out not only for his prodigious technique and sheer stamina but also because of his musical imagination. With each of the four recitals planned thematically, Cassard has also included the works of four other composers who influenced Debussy in the programme - Rameau, Wagner, Chopin and Faure - to provide a broader understanding of Debussy's music. Born in 1962, Cassard studied with Dominique Merlet, Genevieve Joy-Dutilleux, Hans Graf and the legendary Nikita Magaloff. A first prizewinner of the GPA Dublin International Piano Competition and artistic director of two French festivals, Cassard's third of his four-volume recording of Debussy's complete piano works was awarded the prestigious Grand Prix Du Disque.

He also held the position of Associate Leader and Director of the Academy of St. Martin's in the Fields for some years, and has led or directed the English Chamber Orchestra, the London Mozart Players, the London Sinfonietta and many other leading chamber orchestras. As a pianist, whether performing a new commission, making music with like-minded friends, recording unusual works or exploring repertoire beyond the normal Western classical piano tradition, she is committed to sharing her enthusiasm with as wide an audience as possible. The critically acclaimed premiere of Graham Fitkin's Circuit for two pianos, with the BBC Philharmonic, is a highlight of her piano duo partnership with Noriko Ogawa. In July 2004 they gave the Japanese premiere with the Tokyo Philharmonic and Myung- Whun Chung in Suntory Hall. As a result of Kathryn Stott's interest in contemporary music several composers have written for her, including most recently Julian Josephs and a commission by the Concertgebouw for a piano trio by Graham Fitkin. She has given the first performances of new works by many of today's leading composers: Michael Nyman's Piano Concerto, Maxwell Davies's Piano Concerto, and Marc Yeats's The Round and Square Art of Memory, as well as the British premiere of The Four Parables by Paul Schoenfield.

Extractions: Brahms - Sonata No.2 in Eb major, Op.120 An auspicious start to a new season of Blackheath Sundays , under the Halls' new artistic director Jo Paton , given to a sold-out audience in the Recital Room. These were two equally matched virtuosi in complete accord, Collins (one-time winner of the BBC Young Musician competition) giving a display of the power and refinement possible with the clarinet from bravura ff to ppp refinement. Ogawa is a forthright pianist, a concerto pianist in the Weber, a display piece for two soloists, and a whole orchestra in the less straightforward Brahms piano parts. One point worth considering for these concerts, especially when they are sold-out or nearly so. Michael Collins and Noriko Ogawa are big artists, and would have sounded more satisfactory downstairs in the more generous acoustic of the Great Hall; and its Fazioli might have suited Ogawa's playing better? [q.v. my review of Andreas Boyde's Brahms ] - excerpt below: It will be interesting to see how Boyde's Brahms is developing when he returns with further recitals next year; there is the makings of a fine cycle - a great one, we will see? Perhaps Andreas Boyde should consider the possibility of trying the

Extractions: The prolific and long-lived composer Alexander Tcherepnin (1899-1977) is pictured here shortly before he composed his 2nd piano concerto (I chose it for illustration in preference to the grinning publicity photos of pianist and conductor, which reminded me of one's childhood agony when exhorted to 'smile for the picture'!). Prokofiev was a pupil of Tcherepnin's father, and there are clear affinities. The concerto, 'based essentially upon a leap of a fourth', is sparky and optimistic music, typical of (for me) a favourite decade of the last century. A motoric development subsides to introduce a wide ranging set of variations 'bursting with original technical, contrapuntal and rhythmic finesse'. It is deftly orchestrated and played with verve and charm by

Extractions: Nov. 1 Joan Baez, presented by Carolina Union Performing Arts Series, Hill Hall, UNC-CH. The first lady of the '60s folk revival is still going strong at 63. Given that her Chapel Hill show happens the day before the election, you can count on an emotionally charged evening with lots of political commentary. Baez also might give a nod to the Triangle setting, given that she covered Raleigh singer-songwriter Caitlin Cary's "Rosemary Moore" on her last album, "Dark Chords on a Big Guitar" (Koch Records). Nov. 2 "The Producers," presented by Broadway Series South, Memorial Auditorium, BTI Center, Raleigh. Through Nov. 7. Broadway's hottest ticket of 2001 reaches Raleigh, and it's likely to be a sellout here, too. We won't get Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick in Mel Brooks' stage adaptation of his1968 satirical film. But the touring stars Alan Ruck and Lewis J. Stadlen have strong creds, too. Stadlen was a replacement in Lane's role of Max Bialystock in "The Producers," and Ruck's movie roles include "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" (hi, Cameron) and last year's "Cheaper by the Dozen" remake.

Extractions: Its no surprise that the Japanese pianist Noriko Ogawa features on BISs Top 30 edition. She has been one of Robert von Bahrs most fruitful signings, both for the quality of her playing and for the breadth of her repertoire. The first volume of her Debussy intégrale is by any standards distinguished pianism. Her Images challenges Giesekings classic 1953 recording, while Ogawas subtle colouring of the many piano dynamics of Pagodes (from Estampes) marks her out as a rather special Debussy pianist. A particular feature of these performances is her close observance of Debussys many expression marks; youd be surprised how many pianists play fast and loose with Debussys explicit instructions. Excellent sound. Reviewed by Sandy Matheson
