Microsuoni: Morton Feldman Performed by marilyn nonken, recorded 2003. The place Triadic Memories takes us is Performed by marilyn nonken. The DVDAudio version is presented in http://www.microsuoni.com/artists/feldman.morton.html
Extractions: When Feldman met Cage in the winter of 1949, they quickly established a friendship based upon a similarity of intent and a mutual respect for the work each was doing. Soon thereafter, Feldman showed a string quartet he had been writing to Cage. Cage's enthusiasm for this work, and delight in Feldman's being unable to explain "how" he had written it, gave Feldman an all important "permission" to follow his intuition. This period of time marks the beginning of Feldman's "graph music", so named because it was written on graph paper, but also because it is part of a larger movement in 20th century music during which music notation departed from the traditional staff notation and began to incorporate a great deal of graphic symbols.

Articles Written For AUFBAU By Leonard J. Lehrman Old Sources Of sung with noble perseverance by soprano Cheryl Marshall, accompanied by pianistMarilyn nonken, and dedicated by the composer to his family I never met http://artists-in-residence.com/ljlehrman/articles/aufbau54.html
Extractions: April 5, 1998 "Dead nations never rise again." These are the concluding words of the long poem, "The Jewish Cemetery at Newport" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882). At a Merkin Hall concert by the Washington Square Contemporary Music Society (founded 1975), Bruce J. Taub's musical setting of it received its world premiere, sung with noble perseverance by soprano Cheryl Marshall, accompanied by pianist Marilyn Nonken, and dedicated by the composer to his "family I never met who were shot and buried in a mass grave when the Nazis invaded Husiyatin, Poland on July 6, 1941." Most of the setting is straight, quick, syllabic, and square [(in 4/4 time)]. The words of the last line, however, receive five different melodic treatments, ending with a final repetition of the hindsightfully redolent words, "never... again." The verbal manipulation is a gimmick, but one that could work, especially with a little pruning of the 60 lines of text. Ms. Marshall and Ms. Nonken were joined by violinist Deborah Wong and cellist Gregory Hesselink in another world premiere of a more texturally varied, at times quasi-impressionistic setting by Robert Carl (b. 1954) of an even older text, in French, by the philosopher Blaise Pascal (1623-1662), based on his Pensees. Unfortunately, only the first half of the text was printed in the program, so it was hard to follow the last four or so of the eight(?) movements. The use of cello tremolandi and pianistic explosions were, however, particularly effective in the early sections.
Brian Sacawa Yet I ve seen some great performances where the pianist played with the scoreMarilynNonken s recital of the complete Boulez piano sonatas stands out. http://www.sequenza21.com/2005_03_13_bsarchive.html
Extractions: One fact from Mr. De Mare's concert that they both mention, was that Mr. De Mare needed to go off stage to retrieve the score for Mr. Rzewski's work after failing to be able to perform it from memory. That took a lot of guts. And I'm glad that neither Mr. Tommasini or Mr. Oteri castigated Mr. De Mare for doing so. Rather, both give him credit for a wonderful reading of the work with the score. So this makes me wonder, who cares if you play with music in front of you? Does it matter that much? A great performance of a work will transcend the score. When I play a concert, I've internalized the score to a point where I don't really need itin a way I'm playing from memory. But it's nice to have it there as a reference, especially if the music is extremely difficult and complex. (I do play Stockhausen's In Freudschaft from memory, but that's because he specifies that it needs to be played from memory in the score. There is so much choreography that reading a score during performance would be impossible anyway.) It's pretty easy to tell if a performer "owns" the piece or is using the music as a crutch.
Meet The Composer - THE WORKS Commissioned in 1997 (Commissioning Music/USA) by Ensemble 21 for pianist MarilynNonken, Milton Babbit s Allegro Penseroso was performed by pianist John http://www.meetthecomposer.org/works.html
Extractions: In 1982, when the Orchestra Residencies program was developed, a funding phenomena at Meet The Composer began. Since then, the last twenty-one years have seen Meet The Composer fund composers from Adams to Zorn, resulting in a sum of over 700 commissions, at last count. This grand tally provided MTC the ammunition for last summer's (2002) marathon concert, appropriately titled, The Works , in Minnesota. The noon to midnight event not only turned the spotlight on what has been the mission of MTC since its inception, supporting the creators of new music, but the broad and diverse program also served another purpose: to keep music alive by contributing it to the world's repertoire. To those who enjoyed The Works from morning to night at Minneapolis' Southern Theater, and there were many, the event was a treat for the ears; 12 hours of the best MTC has to offer.
TRISTAN MURAIL - Complete Piano Music La Mandragore (1993) CD2 (Total 3919) Les travaux et les Jours (2003) MarilynNonken piano. Murail MSV CD92097(a+b) FP http://www.metierrecords.co.uk/text/97.htm
Extractions: Tristan Murail (b. 1947) explores the piano itself, finding within its resonance, and bringing inescapably to our ears, harmonics and microtones - notes to hear although they have not been played - the supposed unavailability of which compounds the instrument's reputation as an equal-tempered anachronism, little changed since its heyday in the 19th Century. Murail does not epouse the modern fashionable 'tortures' of the precious instrument; clusters (Cowell) preparations (Cage) using the piano's case and pianist's body for their percussive possibilities (Rzewski) electrical distortion (Stockhausen), nor does Nonken have to delve into its innards to 'scrape and pinch' the strings; how ungainly pianists often look doing so! Whilst I don't despise the results of any of those innovations, Tristan Murail (aided essentially by a silent environment and superb studio recording) shows us through the fingers and pedalling of Marilyn Nonken that the equal-tempered instrument remains 'a vast reverberating chamber' with sonorities 'rich and complex, bursting with harmonics, and naturally untempered'.
