In Quest of Spirit These insights sounded in the five works heard at the concert. The longest piece, Song Offerings Gitanjali . The instrumental parts glistened at the concert, but the impressive singing did not match the profundity of the texts in some parts. The soprano writing, which emphasizes very high notes as well as the passaggio transitional range, requires non-standard techniques of vibrato. Judith Bettina seemed to sacrifice details of vibrato (specified in the score) in favor of emotional projection (as didPenelope Walmsley-Clark in the Nimbus recording). Tombeau de Messiaen (1994), for piano and DAT tape, received a spirited performance by pianist Marilyn Nonken. The work blends the live (equal-tempered) piano with pre-recorded piano sounds tuned to twelve different harmonic series. Harvey works with the ambiguity of the two tunings through skillful transitions and overlapping. If I understand correctly, he sees ambiguity as a way of spiritually transcending duality. Extractions: ISAM Home Since my late teens, when I discovered the music of Schoenberg and the postwar moderns, Ive been fascinated by the twentieth-century repertoire. In college, I was fortunate to study with a pioneer of new music piano performance, David Burge, for whom many landmark works were written, including George Crumbs Makrokosmos I . As my tastes have developed over the past decade, my repertoire now includes a variety of composers, ranging from Alvin Lucier, Mario Davidovsky, Milton Babbitt, Salvatore Martirano, and Charles Wuorinen to younger voices such as Lee Hyla, Jason Eckardt, Jeff Nichols, and David Rakowski. I generally find myself drawn to atonal works that are rhythmically adventurous, conceptually unusual, and physically demanding, and to composers with distinct voices and strong musical personalities. As a performer, I mediate the delicate space between the work as written and the music as heard. Composition, writes the composer Chris Dench, is the making manifest of a particular vision

Extractions: When Feldman met Cage in the winter of 1949, they quickly established a friendship based upon a similarity of intent and a mutual respect for the work each was doing. Soon thereafter, Feldman showed a string quartet he had been writing to Cage. Cage's enthusiasm for this work, and delight in Feldman's being unable to explain "how" he had written it, gave Feldman an all important "permission" to follow his intuition. This period of time marks the beginning of Feldman's "graph music", so named because it was written on graph paper, but also because it is part of a larger movement in 20th century music during which music notation departed from the traditional staff notation and began to incorporate a great deal of graphic symbols.
