A virtual unknown on Russian soil, he was soon to be the favourite going into the finals. Traditionally it's a piano program because Bachauer was a pianist, natch, and a memorial endowment was made by friends to present a piano artist every season. In fact it's a split deal because we got Rossini's evergreen Overture to La Gazza Ladra and the Symphony No. 4 of Johannes Brahms (oh boy, a chance to sleep!) in the first half. At intermission, the W-P Auditorium stage was reset for Sergei Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, with Jon Nakamatsu at the piano. Then, of course, we had all day to watch/hear David Effron at work and catalogue all the funny conducting movements unique to this outstanding musician. His presence is perhaps one of the most intriguing aspects of any large ensemble on the series, and it is becoming increasingly obvious that waving the stick may not be his strength. I hate Brahms.

Worth in June, 1997, Nakamatsu''s career has exploded. His award also included two years of career management, international engagements, a recital at Carnegie Hall and a recording contract with Harmonia Mundi. I'm looking forward to it," said Nakamatsu. Nakamatsu, best known for his win at the 1997 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, is also locally remembered as a Stanford University alumnus and former Saint Francis High School German teacher. Although Nakamatsu now tours nationwide with 60-80 concerts a year, he still makes regular stops in the Bay Area. "Playing for the hometown crowd is really fun. This unassuming budding pianist, whose talent was little known, has brought pride to the area that nurtured him. Jon's switch from low to high key came after years of patient perseverence. Piano competitions were played under enormous odds, as he vied against pupils who had studied with famous teachers in renowned conservatories. Since he began piano lessons as young boy, Jon has been under the tutelage of Marina Derryberry, who is still his mentor. An early note of recognition was played by music critic Paul Hertelendy (San Jose Mercuiy News) who wrote glowingly about him in 1995 after Jon won the Chopin Piano Competition in Miami, Fla. That win resulted in piano recitals at New York Lincoln Center and Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The recent Van Cliburn International Piano Competition win assures Jon of many concert appearances in the United States and, undoubtedly, Europe.
