Extractions: 'Nothing succeeds like success,' says the old saw. But success can also provoke hostility, envy and misinformation. In his lifetime, Felix Mendelssohn was the man who had everything. Born rich, he was both brilliant and charming, not only a great musician, a great genius indeed, but a man of many talents and accomplishments, who consorted with the highest in the land (in many lands), while seemingly having time for everyone, whatever their background or attainment. In the world of classical music, he was the ultimate celebrity â particularly in German-speaking lands and in England, where he was all but worshipped. Unlike many distinguished men, his reputation survived him. Towards the end of the 19th century, however, he fell from grace. His importance was deemed increasingly negligible, and even well into the 20th century, his claims to greatness as a composer were held by many to be spurious. On no account, in many quarters, was his name to be mentioned in the same breath as those of his contemporaries Chopin, Liszt and Schumann, let alone Brahms, later on. Today, however, his star is once more in the ascendant as his importance is being reaffirmed. But it's not all Mendelssohn and things Mendelssohnian. In Unsung Heroes, Murray McLachlan explores the music of Boris Tchaikovsky, Leslie Howard talks about his indefatigable journey into the nether reaches of Lisztiana, Alyn Shipton meets Ray Bryant, and John York, as ever, catches up on the latest music publications.

Spectrum book 2 has the easiest pieces, thirty of them, each by a different UK composer (I believe intended to be around Grades 1-4). Book 1 has 20 more difficult pieces (I believe intended to be around Grades 5-8) again each by a different UK composer, and book 3 is an international collection, with 25 pieces each by a composer from a different country.

Extractions: A 20 th Century Tower of Babel This lecture by 's founder and Emeritus Editor, given as part of the Inte rnational Composers Master Class and Music Week at Bilbao , is a reflection not only of Dr Peter Woolf's personal interest in contemporary music but of his international standing as a critic on the subject. Through many years of music going, both in the UK and abroad, PGW has been at the forefront of introducing UK audiences to new and unfamiliar composers, most notably by conceiving and launching in summer 1999. At a time when many music journalists both in the mainstream press and in the newer forum of Internet journalism have been hardened against contemporary composers PGW fought hard to give these new composers the recognition they deserved. Under his editorship, covered festivals ignored by all but the most radical print sources - and in many cases the international festivals reviewed by him remain the only English language reviews available. Many of those festivals are referred to below with specific links to the composers he talks about in this lecture (the URLs are retained in full for the interest of readers unused to using the resource of internet links). was one of the first review sites to focus primarily on live classical music on the Internet. Extractions: The Associated Board (ABRSM) is forging ahead with their ground breaking Spectrum series, initiated by Thalia Myers . The latest volume moves away from the piano and addresses the needs of young and old cellists, with an exploration of the sound worlds of 16 composers born or resident in UK, in miniature pieces of a minute and a half or so. They are intended to appeal to amateurs and professionals, and are arranged progressively to cover Grade 1 to Grade 8. William Bruce has compiled the book and plays them on the included CD with Thalia Myers, a pleasant half hour's listening quite apart from its pedagogical value.

Extractions: For this recording, Sharman re-orchestrated and reworked the second version, now accompanying the bassoon with string orchestra, harp, and timpani. This third incarnation of the work reclaims some of the lushness and colour of the full-orchestra original while preserving the intimacy of the bassoon and piano version. Composed in a Modernist idiom, Sharman's work explores an atonal sound world devoid of any reference to pre-20th-century compositional or stylist traditions. The miracle of modernist works such as At Dusk is that they are able, without referencing music before their time (that is, on their own terms), to conjure something as ephemeral as the special quality of the light and air just after sunset. Rodney Sharman Composer-in-Residence of National Youth Orchestra of Canada Rodney Sharman has been appointed Composer-in-Residence of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. The orchestra meets for the first time this summer in Victoria, BC. Sharman's duties include lecturing, private teaching and the composition of "Mirrors, Echoes" written expressly for the 2004 NYOC. The National Youth Orchestra of Canada consists of some 96 players selected by audition from all regions of Canada. Music Director this year is Maestro Kazuyoshi Akiyama. UBC Composer Stephen Chatman has also been appointed Composer-in-Residence for Summer, 2004. The NYOC will play his work, "Tara's Dream".
