Classical Music - The UK Magazine For The Music Professional In our centrepiece, we mark Stephen Hough s triumph at the Classical Brit Awards Brian Priestley catches up with the brilliant young jazz pianist Gwilym http://www.rhinegold.co.uk/magazines/pi/pi-editorial.cfm
Extractions: 'Nothing succeeds like success,' says the old saw. But success can also provoke hostility, envy and misinformation. In his lifetime, Felix Mendelssohn was the man who had everything. Born rich, he was both brilliant and charming, not only a great musician, a great genius indeed, but a man of many talents and accomplishments, who consorted with the highest in the land (in many lands), while seemingly having time for everyone, whatever their background or attainment. In the world of classical music, he was the ultimate celebrity â particularly in German-speaking lands and in England, where he was all but worshipped. Unlike many distinguished men, his reputation survived him. Towards the end of the 19th century, however, he fell from grace. His importance was deemed increasingly negligible, and even well into the 20th century, his claims to greatness as a composer were held by many to be spurious. On no account, in many quarters, was his name to be mentioned in the same breath as those of his contemporaries Chopin, Liszt and Schumann, let alone Brahms, later on. Today, however, his star is once more in the ascendant as his importance is being reaffirmed. But it's not all Mendelssohn and things Mendelssohnian. In Unsung Heroes, Murray McLachlan explores the music of Boris Tchaikovsky, Leslie Howard talks about his indefatigable journey into the nether reaches of Lisztiana, Alyn Shipton meets Ray Bryant, and John York, as ever, catches up on the latest music publications.

GEMINI PIANO TRIO - Reviews3 The liner notes by Benjamin myers and HsiuHui Wang provide some As Goucherfaculty, Hsiu-Hui and Ben have definitely made their mark and are upholding http://www.geminipianotrio.com/reviews3/
Extractions: The Gemini Trio functions comparably to a living cell, and the individual instruments its organelles. For a cell to sustain and thrive, its constituent parts must work cooperatively, make compromises and be totally aware of what is transpiring around it. Pianist, cellist, and violinist play together in such a finely tuned balance that each minute sonic alteration made by one is immediately detected by the others. On the cover is a tastefully manipulated, purple-tinted leaf covered with dew. This attractive photograph is complemented by a large, white, intellectual typeface. The liner notes by Benjamin Myers and Hsiu-Hui Wang provide some fascinatingly original insights into the Ravel and Shostakovich trios. The Gemini Trio turns each opus into a story and realizes a latent program derived from overall structure, melodic turns, and subtle variations in mood and harmony. Music department chair Dr. Lisa Weiss has heard the Gemini Trio play live on several occasions. When interviewed about her thoughts on the piano trio and their standing in the department, Dr. Weiss remarked: "I am so delighted to have both Hsiu-Hui and Ben on our faculty. They are both musicians of the highest caliber and are also excellent teachers.
