Extractions: by Jay Nordlinger W One thing that seems certain about young musicians is that they have little trouble getting recording contracts. The market is flooded with such recordings, and we will survey a few of them, beginning with that of a violinist, Alexander Sitkovetsky, born in Russia in 1983. He grew up under the eye of the late Lord Menuhin, and his new album is entitled Sasha EMI CD H Rococo Variations The Swan EMI Carnival of the Animals A G T Diabelli Variations VAI .) It has been some time since a single piano performance was so heavily marketed. Anderszewski, born in 1969, is the son of a Polish father and a Hungarian mother, and his career has for many years attracted attention. In 1990, he withdrew from the Leeds Competition, dissatisfied with his playing in the semifinal round. Many observers had figured he would win. Anderszewski is the type of musician thought psychologically interesting. Perhaps he is. The Diabelli Variations Thirty-three Variations on a Waltz by Diabelli A s for those in the singing trade, the world is bursting with them, and we have a particular abundance of new, or newish, mezzo-sopranos. One of them is the Finn Monica Groop, who has made her name in Baroque music. She happens to be a beauty, which will do no harm to her career; her record label, Finlandia, lays her out like a film star. The latest CD is Arie Amorose Giulio Cesare Alcina , should be spellbinding; from Groop, though, it is a bit stiff and unremarkable. Nevertheless, she imparts dignity and stateliness, which are recurrent qualities in her work.

Extractions: The first reunion will take place at the 47th Regular Concert, with the violinist Rainer Kussmaul. In the autumn of 1998, Kussmaul appeared at MCO as a soloist along with the pianist Andreas Steieir. Their performance of Mendelssohn's Concerto for Violin, Piano and Strings drew resounding applause. This time, he will parlay his brilliant career as the former concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic as he sits in the concertmaster's chair throughout the program, leading the MCO. Another piece in the program that is being much talked about is Beethoven's Triple Concerto for Piano, Violin and Cello, which features two string soloists that MCO is proud of Takumi Kubota on the violin and Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi on the cello together with one of the most exciting pianists of the younger generation, Olli Mustonen. These artists of remarkable talent, who have captured the attention of the world's music circles with their distinctly individual performances, will join forces with MCO to produce a thrilling moment. They will fulfill all your expectations.
ODE 9552 mustonen is as capable a pianist as he is a conductor. olli mustonen, bestknown for the edgy individualism of his piano playing, secures an excellent http://home.wanadoo.nl/ovar/sovrev/shchedrin/ODE552.htm
Extractions: Marko Ylönen (cello) This takes me back to 1998 when I first began reviewing for the site. BMG-Melodiya were good enough to support us at that time by allowing us review copies of some of their (still available) Shchedrin series. These included the first two symphonies and the three piano concertos (there are five now) with the Fifth premiered in Los Angeles in 1999 by Mustonen, its dedicatee. Mustonen is as capable a pianist as he is a conductor. Shchedrin is known for his Carmen ballet written for a supercharged vast string band and a battery of percussion. The ballet is an overwhelming work in virtuoso hands. The composer is a Muscovite who studied with Yakov Flier (piano) and composition with Yuri Shaporin. He refused to conform to Soviet norms and maintained links with exiled dissidents such as Rostropovich. He now divides his time between Munich and Russia. His Third Symphony (Sinfonia Concertante) has been written for Lorin Maazel and the Bayerische Rundfunk. The Seagull suite is made up of seven movements based on Chekhov's play. No movement is longer than 4.52. This is restless more demonstrative music but downbeat consistent with the gloom of the original. The mood is lightened (or perhaps intensified) by the flickering interludes which dance in rapid unrest like a collision between Kastchei's skittering Firebird, Tchaikovsky's Dance of the Flowers and a feral Prokofiev waltz.

A year later he made his first composition attempts, and from 1975 studied composition with Einoiuhani Rautavaara. Soon, Mustonen was much sought after, both as a conductor and as a concert pianist (studies with Eero Heinonen). Since 1989, Mustonen has been playing an active role in the musical scene of his home country; first, he became artistic director of the Korsholm Music Festival and from 1990-1992 of the Turku Music Festival as well. He is co-founder and director of the Helsinki Festival Orchestra, and since 2003 has been conducting the chamber orchestra Tapiola Sinfonietta. As a pianist, Mustonen has given concerts with numerous major international orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orkest, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonics, and others. In addition, he maintains close working relations with renowned conductors such as Daniel Barenboim, Pierre Boulez and Christoph Eschenbach. In 1999, he performed the world première of Rodion Shchedrins Piano Concerto No. 5, which is dedicated to him, with Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. For his recording of 24 Preludes and Fugues by Dmitri Shostakovich and 25 Preludes by Charles-Valentin Alkan, Mustonen received both the Edison Award and the Gramophone Award in 1992.
