Extractions: The QEH has, mercifully, abandoned its experiment with video 'enhancement' trained onto the keyboard, but even if your seats were not at the preferred keyboard side (where the sound of a piano is often inferior!) there was no problem about 'seeing the hands' of this pianist. Olli Mustonen offered a visual show of unique self-indulgence - one wondered if a choreographer should have been listed in his CV credits. For a quiet note, his right hand may descend from above head height; describe arabesques in the air, and sometimes he flutters his fingers. Significant moments are brought to our attention by attacking the keyboard from the back of his head, at others from a bizarre gesture at the back of his neck, as if he had to brush away an irritating insect. One could only guess that all this was based upon some alternative-medicine notion of relaxation, a world away from the unostentatious poise of Sokolov for whom such antics would be anathema.

Extractions: 'There's some real magic in this disc. His brilliant, glittering, delicate playing adds an icy edge of enchantment and clarity to pieces that are already enchanting in their own right...One feels that Mustonen understands Sibelius' imagination from the inside; outside, his touch gleams with the otherworldly incandescence of frost patterns in the sunlight'.

Decca Music Group - New Release olli mustonen piano Steven Isserlis cello In the music for violin and pianoby Prokofiev Joshua Bell is partnered by Finnish pianist olli mustonen. http://www.deccaclassics.com/newsandnewreleases/april2005/4756712.html
Extractions: Prokofiev's music for violin is presented in this set of discs and includes both of his Violin Sonatas and the two Violin Concertos. In addition the set of miniatures simply entitled is included. Prokofiev's two Violin Concertos are among the great violin concertos of the twentieth century even if the First Concerto (first performed in Paris in October 1923) was not an immediate success - largely due to the lyrical mood which dominates the work at a time when "modernism" was much to the fore. The Second Concerto was written when Prokofiev had been in self-imposed exile in the West for almost 20 years. The work was a reult of a commission from French violinist Robert Soëtans in 1935 and even though the composer himself stated he wanted to write something different after the First Concerto the new work is still an essentially melodic outpouring.

Extractions: It is another Year of the Piano at the Ford Centre for the Performing Arts, with several piano series bringing many of the worlds classical keyboard titans to Toronto. The season-long festival of great piano playing will be memorable for music-lovers, particularly piano-philes. Furthermore, the Hamburg and New York Steinway D concert grand pianos that make their home in the Ford Centre add to the total musical experience. Four superlative pianists, Emanual Ax, Fou Tsong, Yefim Bronfman and Olli Mustonen are the recitalists in the series called Master Pianists. The four-part Master Pianists series is reviewed in this article, of which the last one is scheduled for March 24th 1999 , featuring the exciting, imaginative and controversial Finnish pianist, Olli Mustonen. He makes his Ford Centre debut with a program of Preludes and Fugues by J.S. Bach and Shostakovich. The Master Pianists series was launched on Nov 17th ,1998 with the first Ford Centre solo recital by Emanual Ax highlighting Haydns Sonata in A-flat major. His diverse repertoire for the evening also included works by John Corigliano, Claude Debussy, and Franz Schubert. Emanual Axs rendering of the Haydn sonata is characterized with piquant harmonies, varying textures and phrasing. The first movement has a recurring three-bar long melodic idea embedded beneath a cascade of rippling passages and decorative trills. While most of the finger work is carried out by the right hand, it is the left hand that sets the momentum and harmonic changes.

Extractions: first published in The Cincinnati Post March 15, 2004) The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestras 2004-05 Music Hall season is being called a "Season of Discovery," with no less than 68 artists making their CSO debuts. Fifty-eight of them are members of the Estonian National Male Choir, who will open the season Sept. 17 and 18 with music director Paavo Järvi and the CSO in the CSO premiere of Sibelius epic "Kullervo" Symphony. The opening concert will have added luster since Jarvi won a 2004 Grammy for best choral performance with the Estonian National Male Choir ("Sibelius Cantatas" for Virgin Classics). "Its something that I really cant wait to do," said Jarvi, speaking by phone from London Saturday. Other artists debuting during the season include guest conductors Olari Elts (also Estonian and winner of the 2000 Sibelius International Conductors Competition), Houston Symphony music director Hans Graf and Brazilian Roberto Minczuk, associate conductor of the New York Philharmonic.
