Extractions: Mr. Antoscas computer music compositions have been performed throughout the United States and he was a guest composer at the Southeastern Composers League 1997 Festival of New Music and at Radford Universitys New Horizons 2002 Festival. He has been a fellow at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. His work shadowland appears in the MIT publication The Csound Book. In 2001, Mr. Antosca produced the Exploring the American Piano concert for the Smithsonians Piano 300 Exhibition. He premiered his work invisible landscape for piano and conducted electronics, which was regarded by the Washington Post as the highlight of the evening. He has received numerous grants for the creation of new compositions and for teaching technology. He has been an Artist-in-Residence with the Music Department at the Ellington School, working with young musicians interested in incorporating technology in their music. Recent commissions include a composition for dance, computer processed audio and text premiered in September 2002 at the Kennedy Center as part of their Local Dance Commissioning Project and a commission for pianist Laurie Hudicek for a new work, traces of spirit whispers, for piano and real-time computer processed audio, performed at the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage in September of 2003.

Extractions: Take two esteemed Kansas City jazz veterans (bassist Gerald Spaits and drummer Tommy Ruskin), a relatively new, and very welcome addition to the area jazz scene (pianist and transplanted upstate New Yorker Paul Hofmann), put them together in one of KC's finest studios (Soundtrek) with a gifted engineer (Ron Ubel) running the board...and what do you get? A swinging, rock-solid date, just out on CD, entitled Things Are Looking Up!, Paul Hofmann's third release on his own MHR label. The fare here is acoustic trio-playing at its finest (plus some tasty solo piano and one piano/drums duo). Whether it be recognizable standards ("Doxy," "Seven Steps To Heaven," "When I Fall In Love") played to near perfection, or a healthy batch of Hofmann originals (8 of the disc's 12 cuts), this project represents a combination of charts and musicians predestined to work some genuine magic in the studio. What a pleasure it must have been for Ron Ubel to simply sit back and enjoy. Especially noteworthy is the trio's treatment of the album's title tune (and first track), "Things Are Looking Up!," a relatively obscure Gershwin brothers song composed a year before George Gershwin's death in 1937. It sets the mood perfectly for what follows: inventive and technically masterful piano choruses, in-the-pocket, Gibraltar-like bass lines (and solos), and the precision drumming of one of the area's most respected and recognizable stickmen.

Extractions: A native of Detroit Michigan, jazz bassist Mark Simon 's family moved to Colorado in 1971 where he began playing string bass and bass guitar. Mr. Simon has performed and recorded locally and throughout Colorado for more than 20 years. He was the bassist with Carmen McRae's trio in the late 80's early 90's touring Europe, Japan and the U.S. He has been a sideman with many of the biggest names in music, including Dizzy Gillespie, Rosemary Clooney, James Moody, Benny Carter, Joe Farrell, Robben Ford, Dave Grusin, Mose Allison and Kenny Rankin, to name just a few. Mark is a faculty member at the Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts, is a mentor for the Douglas County Schools, and teaches privately. His playing and compositions can be heard on many Capri jazz label recordings including the sextet Convergences' latest, " Modern Man".
