Miller Theatre: Composer Portraits blair mcmillen, piano counter)induction Jeffrey Milarsky, conductor pianist Marilyn Nonkenan audience favorite at past Miller Theatre completeworks http://www.millertheater.com/series/composer.html
Extractions: The core of Miller Theatre's programming is its Composer Portraits series. These concerts investigate the work of a single composer by offering a prismatic view of their output. This season includes a focus on the work of several New York-based composers, as well as two performances in conjunction with the new city-wide Sounds French festival. Click on the links below to order single tickets online. A small surcharge applies to all online orders. 6-concert Spring Composer Portraits Passport Please note that artists and programs are subject to change. 7PM preconcert discussion with David Lang and Alan Pierson Provocative New York composer David Lang (b. 1957) approaches his classical craft with urban sensibility. The Passing Measures (which takes its name from a pair of dances for virginal by William Byrd) is a quasi-concerto for bass clarinet accompanied by chorus and amplified orchestra. The forty-minute work is a monumental musical environment, emotionally charged and meditative. The So-called Laws of Nature , written for the So Percussion Ensemble, is a rock 'n' roll romp on pieces of junk metal, wood planks, and drums, heard here in its entirety for the first time. Another new work, described by the composer as a showcase for Alarm Will Sound, fills out this evening of excitement.

Extractions: Mr. McMillens technique was outright formidable. Dazzling and virtuosic; he is at turns, all highly charged density and in the next instant, spiritually translucent and lucent, always with a sensitivity that brings illumination to the knottiest music at his fingertips. Scelsis Sonata No. 2, allowed Mr. McMillen to amply display his pedaling, most notable in his exemplary use of the sustain, and his complete command of repetition and silences, allowing him to portray the verve and energy of he outer movements in beautiful balance with the more contemplative inner movement. The Six Encores of Luciano Berio were broken up between the two segments of the program. Mr. McMillen programmed the three dealing with the elements of fire, water and earth first and brought the descriptively evocative nature of the works to the fore. Feuerklavier was dexterously fleet and capricious; Wasserklavier was translucent and rife with crystalline arpeggios; Erdenklavier was suitably apt and coloristically textured with more weightier tone and depth of feeling without being ponderous.

Extractions: At Maurice Ravel's desk, Montfort-l'Amaury, France "... Using Ravel and Couperin as a model, Mr. Hall's Le Tombeau de Honegger is essentially a neoclassic composition, in which only the pitch style differs from earlier composers, not the generally enjoyable rhythms and tempi. The third movement, Hornpipe , is analogous to Couperin's Rigadoun made memorable in Ravel's by now classic composition. It's delicious rhythm is irresistible..." Review from The New Music Connoisseur of Le Tombeau de Honegger , performed by Blair McMillen at the 2004 American Composers Alliance Festival of New American Music. "...the best of these (pieces) was Greg Hall's solo piano piece For Graham Fitkin , an earnestly pleasing study in textures that expertly navigates harmonies ranging from Roy Harris-style polytonality to jazzy upper tertian aggregates..." Review by David Cleary from The New Music Connoisseur of For Graham Fitkin , performed by the composer at the 2001 Ought-One NonPop festival.

SoundStage! Elliott Schwartz - Equinox The performances of violinist Renee Jolles, cellist Brent Samuel and pianistBlair mcmillen are precise and moving. Equinox is the only orchestral http://www.soundstage.com/music/reviews/rev311.htm
Extractions: david@soundstage.com Musical Performance Recording Quality Overall Enjoyment Elliott Schwartz is one of America's most prolific composers in the broad compositional style known as post-modernism. While he has experimented with synthesizers, tape, jazz and other trappings of the avant-garde, he has remained committed to composing concert music using traditional instruments. Equinox collects chamber and orchestral works which require that a committed listener accept a musical vocabulary of jagged melodies and sometimes murky harmonies. Yet, Schwartz's stirring music is also full of emotion and personality that sweep the listener along with them. "Phoenix," written for bassoon and piano, is a good example of Schwartz's eclectic style of chamber music. The composer explains that the piece is about hope, rebirth and flight and, in an attempt to evoke the image of the phoenix rising from the ashes, he playfully paraphrases sources as diverse as Stravinsky's Firebird and Jerome Kern's "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes." However, despite Schwartz's whimsical use of sources, this is a serious chamber work. While the bassoon plods along in lengthy and deliberate phrases, the piano alternately whoops, clangs and grumbles. In fact, there are times during the piece when the instruments seem to be playing two different compositions. It is clear that the piano is supplying the color and emotion while the bassoon remains the slow and methodical voice of reason.
