Extractions: 2004-2005 Concert Season In 2003-2004, the Institute for Advanced Study's Artist-in-Residence Program launched Recent Pasts 20/21 , a four-year initiative of chamber music concerts and lectures. Hosted by Institute Artist-in-Residence, composer Jon Magnussen, the series is designed to explore the wide variety of aesthetic perspectives in western art music of the 20th and early 21st centuries. This year's series features nationally and internationally known artists with performances by Bruce Brubaker, piano; Judith Bettina, soprano, with James Goldsworthy, piano; Blair McMillen, piano; and the New York-based ensemble, Continuum Speakers in the series include composers Milton Babbitt, Philip Glass, Andrew Imbrie, Paul Lansky and pianist/scholar Joel Sachs. Each Institute concert series includes a concert talk with the musicians hosted by Magnussen. Tickets are free for these popular concerts, and the Institute makes available as many tickets as possible for distribution beyond the Institute community. As a jazz musician he has performed with many of the all time greats, including Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Tony Bennett, Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, Gil Evans, Buddy Rich, Ron Carter, Sonny Fortune, and more. She has a particular interest in new music, having premiered many new Australian works for Contemporary Menu, Musicus Novus, and with her own ensemble Newbridge whose novel performances of Pierrot Lunaire, in which all the musicians were directed and choreographed, received rave reviews in the Melbourne Age. She has also premiered new works for MATA in New York. Last year she played principal flute with the Philip Glass Ensemble on their tour of Greece and Italy. She and her husband Andrew expect their son, Ravi, to arrive on February 1st.
