Classical CD Reissues Pt. 2, 5/04 AUDIOPHILE AUDITION Romanian pianist radu lupu (b. 1945) came to international prominence at the 1966 Van Cliburn Competition; then again at the Georges Enesco Competition, http://www.audaud.com/audaud/MAY04/reissues/recds2.html
Extractions: Inscriptions from November 1957 reissued from the Decca originals, featuring the late Jean Martinon (1910-1976), the able composer-conductor whose estimate in France was under-rated, but whose repute in Britain and the United States was high, especially in French music and in modern works. Martinon took his cue from Charles Munch, his mentor and professional guide, but Martinon's touch and colors were slightly more classical than Munch's penchant for colossal, romantic intensity. Martinon reminds me more of the classical chastity I hear in Roger Desormiere, whose sensibilities almost match Martinon's exactly. Both traverse modernism with elements of the classical ballet, qualities apparant in the Prokofiev C# Minor Symphony, the composer's swan-song that here, in this pristine rendition, might be an homage to Tchaikovsky.

Extractions: Beethoven once said that if Napoleon knew as much about war as he knew about music, he wanted to show the French Emperor who the master really was. Beethoven's Piano Concerto No.5 in E flat opus 73: The Emperor fully reflects the composer's aspiration to be the King of Music. A short study of the historical background of any composition often eases my involvement with the musical passages and I was listening to a captivating performance of Romanian pianist Radu Lupu on his 1973 Decca recording via the Zanden 2000 premium transport alongside its matching 5000 Signature DAC at the time of this writing.

Extractions: By Classical Voice February, 2004 Tue, Feb 10 N ot often do you find a classical concert venue packed to the rafters on a Tuesday night. Even more remarkably, at only 23, violinist Hilary Hahn displayed a prodigious musicality and technique that all but bowled over her fans and skeptics alike in the audience (including my next-seat neighbor, a retired assistant concertmaster of the L.A. Phil). And she did all that with the ease and naturalness of an evening stroll in the park amidst the moonlit gardens of Mozart and J.S. Bach. The program started and ended with Mozart sonatas (K.301 and K.526). Hahn's playing was ingratiatingly free of mannerism and showing a surprising depth of emotion in the K.526 andante. Natalie Zhu 's piano playing, while generally excellent, was somewhat on the heavy side and did not match Hahn's scrupulous refinement and elegance.

Extractions: Piano Concerto No.1 in D minor An Inktroduction by Johann D'Souza Jump to Recommended Recordings Very few piano concertos begin with a marking like "Maestoso". One which comes to mind is Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto , which is marked "Moderato". I point this out because commonly there is normally an "Allegro" (fast) first, followed by a slow movement and then ending with a relatively fast movement. Brahms on the other hand opts for "Maestoso-poco piu moderato" (majestically, a "little more moderato" - whatever that means...) and an Adagio second movement followed by another relatively moderate third movement Rondo (Allegro non troppo-piu animato-Tempo I) It is the marking of "Maestoso" in the first movement that I feel Brahms must have carefully picked to express his feelings of grief. The interplay of the woodwind against a backdrop of syncopated strings with sudden, fortissimo tutti entries strengthen this impression at this tempo, compared to a faster pace. Brahms wrote two piano concertos: the first in D minor and the second in B-flat major. Both are rather lengthy, like a symphony - roughly in the region of 50 minutes apiece. His Second Concerto is equally interesting with a distinct solo passage in the third movement played by cello and accompanied by the piano, something seldom seen. Written originally as a sonata for two pianos it was then turned into a symphony which finally found itself becoming a concerto. It begins with a very strong tutti reminiscent like that of an orchestral tutti . Its premiere was met with mixed feelings because of its size and the intensity needed to pull it off. The work was dubbed a "symphony with piano obligato" by the critics at the first performance.

Extractions: default BOSTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Conducted by Stanislaw Skrowaczewski. Radu Lupu, piano soloist. All-Beethoven program. January 12, Symphony Hall. By DEBBY LEVINSON AN ALL-BEETHOVEN PROGRAM is always a treat, but the BSO's selection of Romanian pianist Radu Lupu as soloist made a special afternoon even more spectacular. Lupu's technique was flawless, and he brought a sensitive touch to the glissandi and trills of the "Allegro con brio" of the Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor . His touch was never overbearing or ponderous, even in the lower range, and his notes in the higher range sparkled. His performance of the concerto's cadenza was brilliant; Lupu drew out both the passage's storminess and its gentle lyricism. The third piece of the afternoon, the Symphony No. 3 in E flat , "Eroica," at first lacked the polish of the Piano Concerto there were some overly loud horn notes that bordered on the harsh but when the orchestra settled down, the piece regained its glorious, thunderous character. The second movement, "Marcia funebre; Adagio assai," was appropriately dark but dragged occasionally. The BSO's joyful, spirited rendition of the brisk-tempoed third movement was a welcome change from the moody, depressing atmosphere of the "Marcia funebre." The "Leonore" Overture No. 3
Extractions: The Beethoven Piano Concerto Festival began this past week with pianist Radu Lupu performing Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, Op. 58 . Mr. Lupu, one of the finest pianists performing these days, gave us a beautiful but greatly understated performance of this great concerto. The opening movement contained an exquisite piano solo by Mr. Lupu. The understated play may have been most profound in the sublime second movement with its infamous call and response between the orchestra strings and piano. Mr. Lupus response to the aggressive play of the orchestra strings was defiantly passive. Even the finale, the rondo: vivace, which often leaps off the stage sort of strolled through the concertos conclusion. Franz Welser-Most made a fine partner with Mr. Lupus interpretation keeping a tight control on the orchestras dynamics. The concerto was performed with almost a sense of insignificance though the music itself prevents that from happening. The evening continued with Franz Schuberts Symphony in B minor, D. 759
