Extractions: This disc is one of four releases on the budget-priced Eloquence label containing Radu Lupus 1970s recordings of all five Beethoven Piano Concertos. Lupus performances were widely acclaimed when they first appeared, and it is good to see them back in circulation. They were taped variously between 1971 (No 3) and 1980 (No 1, the only digital recording in the set) and, with the exception of No 3 (in which Lawrence Foster conducts the London Symphony Orchestra), featured the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Zubin Mehta. In fact Decca proudly proclaim these (with their prominent photo-logo of Mehta) to be part of their Zubin Mehta Edition, thereby attributing (by implication) the lions share of the honours to the conductor rather than the soloist!

Extractions: Look closely and you might see Paavo Järvi's heart on his sleeve as he opens the Cincinnati Symphony's first concert of the new year at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Music Hall. Järvi, who last conducted the orchestra in November, during their first tour of Europe together, has put together a thoroughly romantic program, beginning with the Interlude from "Sangen" ("The Song"), a 1921 symphonic cantata by Swedish composer Wilhelm Stenhammar. The four-minute orchestral work, a kind of early valentine with melting strings and glowing brass, is a CSO premiere. Guest artist is famed pianist Radu Lupu, who will perform Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1, a work of passion and depth composed when Brahms was only 28. Järvi will close with Richard Strauss' tone poem "Ein Heldenleben" ("A Hero's Life"), a portrait of the artist-as-hero with, of course, Strauss as the hero. There is bombast, battle and also romance, with CSO concertmaster Timothy Lees performing the violin solos, which represent Strauss' stormy, seductive wife, Pauline. Tickets are $17.50-$73, half-price for seniors, $10 for students. Call (513) 381-3300 or visit

New York Chronicle By Jay Nordlinger The Romanian pianist radu lupu comes from the Schnabel school. He is a worthyif sometimes eccentric and willfulplayer of Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms. http://www.newcriterion.com/archive/20/mar02/jay.htm
Extractions: by Jay Nordlinger L M ichelle DeYoung is a youngish American mezzo-soprano with a big and burgeoning career: concert dates, operatic roles, recordings, the works. So it was with some anticipation that I attended her recital in Weill Recital Hall (part of the larger Carnegie complex). It could be that DeYoung did not put her best foot forward that evening. Beginning the second half of the program were Six Songs on Poems by D. H. Lawrence Michelle DeYoung must have something on the ball for the vocal world to have responded as positively to her as it has. But these winning qualities were not to the fore in her recent recital. A after A t the end of January, the Orchestre de Paris visited Carnegie Hall, with its music director, Christoph Eschenbach, the German who is set to assume the leadership of the Philadelphia Orchestra. They brought with them the French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, who has received some of the most rapturous reviews of the recent period. What was all the fuss about? Was it truly for his pianism, or did it have to do with his steadfast devotion to new music (Aimard has long been a soldier in the army of Pierre Boulez)?
