Music director Gerard Schwarz has programmed three festivals for 2006: an "Amadeus" festival in January honoring the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth; a "Shostakovich Uncovered" festival in March/April; and a "Made in America" festival of contemporary American music in May. The Russian-accented 2005-06 season begins with an all-Russian opening-night gala with pianist Van Cliburn. He'll play his signature piece (with which he won the Tchaikovsky Competition in 1958), the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1. Schwarz conducts the program, which includes Tchaikovsky's "1812" Overture. He also leads the orchestra's second big gala on New Year's Eve, celebrating the arrival of 2006 with pianist Jon Kimura Parker.

Extractions: T. Nikolaeva's concert activities, having begun even before the pianist's victory at the Bach International Competition, in 1950, have continued for more than 40 years. All this time the artist's tours in more than 35 countries have been an invariable success. Nikolaeva's discs enjoy a well-deserved, world-wide popularity today just as they have for decades. She is one of the few truly immortal performers. On May 7, 1986 at the New Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, there took place the first concert of pianist Nikolai Lugansky. Shortly before that, the young musician marked his 14th birthday. The large, complex program of the concert, technically perfect, full of youthful exuberance and inspiration, demonstrated the pianist's mature sense of style and deep insight of each work. His success enabled him to occupy an important place among the world's most well-known musicians.

There I noted his immense technical fluency and innate musical quality while finding some of his playing oddly detached. The same qualities emerge in these fleet, exceptionally well-mannered performances of the Third and Fourth Concertos, set within Ivan Shpillers polite, even anodyne, partnership (try the one moment of orchestral glory, the introduction to the Third Concertos central Intermezzo) and Vanguard Classics gentle, soft-focus sound. Such an approach may be temporarily fashionable (recent discs by Andsnes and Thibaudet come to mind) but Rachmaninovs regenerative glamour and urgency surely require at least as much recognition as his inherently aristocratic nature.
