JOE LOCKE BIOGRAPHY ON MILESTONE RECORDS In the course of a long and varied career, vibraphonist Joe Locke has Joe hasbeen working on a new collaboration with pianist/coleader Dave Hazeltine, http://www.fantasyjazz.com/html/lockebio.html
Extractions: Catalog In the course of a long and varied career, vibraphonist Joe Locke has established an imposing track record for inspired musical interpretationas leader, sideman, and arranger. His third Milestone album Slander (And Other Love Songs) is the latest addition to the 39-year-old veteran's distinguished discography. Locke is joined by pianist Billy Childs and drummer Gene Jackson, who were on hand for Locke's 1995 Milestone debut Moment to Moment: The Music of Henry Mancini ; bassist Rufus Reid, heard (along with Childs and Jackson) on last year's Sound Tracks ; and guitarist Vic Juris (on five of the CD's nine cuts) in a program that showcases Locke's continued growth as composer and arranger. In addition to memorable originals like "Saturn's Child," "Cecil B. DeBop," and "Slander," Locke reworks such disparate pop gems as Stevie Wonder's "Tuesday Heartbreak," "I Can't Help Falling in Love with You," and Joni Mitchell's "Blue," performed as a duet with Childs. While he was in junior high and high school, Locke took advantage of the Eastman School's preparatory department and studied privately with bassist Steve Davis, pianists Phil Markowitz and Bill Dobbins, and others. "I think I got damn near the equivalent of a college education," he says. Within a week of graduating from high school, Locke deferred further pursuit of formal schooling and hit the road with a band that included Spider Martin and Steve Davis. Before long he was participating in recording dates with the likes of saxophonist Pepper Adams and drummer Billy Hart, and landing gigs alongside saxist Sal Nistico, organists Groove Holmes and Jack McDuff, and many others.

Extractions: 1992, 1997 by Thomas L Morgan Joe Jordan was a musical talent who, during the course of his long and productive life, helped to bring about several important changes in the entertainment world, and witnessed many more. He was not an actor, but his songs could turn an actor or actress into a star. And that is exactly what happened. Jordan was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1882 and studied music at the Lincoln Institute (now Lincoln University) in Jefferson City, Missouri. His name first came to light at the turn of the century when he played piano in St. Louis with Louis Chauvin and Sam Patterson. Chauvin was a brilliant ragtime pianist who favored the carefree life of a bawdyhouse piano player over a more structured and disciplined musical career, but Jordan was more ambitious. Under the guidance of Tom Turpin, a saloon owner whose piano playing was considered the best in the country at that time, Jordan formed a quartet that played in clubs and at church socials. The group was unique in that all four menJordan, Turpin, Chauvin, and Pattersonplayed piano at the same time.

The Red Mahogany Piano Joe Edwards Being a pianist of some ability myself, I was stunned by her virtuosity, Aren t you the man who sold my grandma a piano a long time ago? http://www.livinglifefully.com/flo/floredmahogany.htm
Extractions: Joe Edwards Many years ago, when I was a young man in my twenties, I worked as a salesman for a St. Louis piano company. We sold our pianos all over the state by advertising in small town newspapers and then, when we had received sufficient replies, we would load our little trucks, drive into the area and sell the pianos to those who had replied. Every time we would advertise in the cotton country of Southeast Missouri, we would receive a reply on a postcard that said, in effect, "Please bring me a new piano for my little granddaughter. It must be red mahogany. I can pay $10 a month with my egg money." The old lady scrawled on and on and on that postcard until she filled it up, then turned it over and even wrote on the front around and around the edges until there was barely room for the address. Of course, we could not sell a new piano for $10 a month. No finance company would carry a contract with payments that small, so we ignored her postcards. One day, however, I happened to be in that area calling on other replies, and out of curiosity I decided to look the old lady up. I found pretty much what I expected: The old lady lived in a one room sharecroppers cabin in the middle of a cotton field. The cabin had a dirt floor and there were chickens in the house. Obviously, the old lady could not have qualified to purchase anything on credit no car, no phone, no real job, nothing but a roof over her head and not a very good one at that. I could see daylight through it in several places. Her little granddaughter was about 10, barefoot and wearing a feedsack dress.

Extractions: DONNA LONG was born in Los Angeles, California. When she was five years old, she began taking piano lessons with her father; a jazz/classical pianist who instilled in Donna a love for music. In 1978, she moved to the Baltimore/Washington, DC area and heard fiddler, Brendan Mulvihill playing Irish music. He inspired her to pick up the fiddle and gave her a solid foundation in style and playing. She then began to accompany him on the piano and now Donna is considered one of the finest pianists playing Irish music. Along with Brendan Mulvihill, they recorded two duet albums together; The Steeplechase and The Morning Dew. Donna has now passed her music on to her son Jesse Smith and helped produce his first solo recording entitled "The Hurricane." She can also be heard as a guest artist on the motion picture soundtrack "Out of Ireland."

SongwriterUniverse Magazine - Joe Firstman Article his mother was an accomplished pianist and attempted to pass this talent onto Id love to write a song that sounds like The long and Winding Road, http://www.songwriteruniverse.com/firstman.htm
Extractions: By Jayne Moore For singer/songwriter Joe Firstman, who has just finished a tour opening for Sheryl Crow, released his first album on Atlantic Records, and co-written songs with his idol, Bernie Taupin, the decision to buy a one-way bus ticket from his home in North Carolina to Los Angeles has proven to be the right one. Joe Firstman With his music being compared to early Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Neil Young and the Black Crowes, Firstman (who is 23) laughs and says, that doesnt hurt my feelings a bit. If Im going to be compared to someone, I think Im in pretty good company. Raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, Firstmans first musical influence was his mother, a professional opera singer. I was never into opera, he said. I was too busy with baseball at that time, but it was pretty cool being dragged to those four-hour operas and seeing everyone stand up and applaud for my mom. Although Firstman never had any formal musical training, his mother was an accomplished pianist and attempted to pass this talent onto her son, who, at the time, was more interested in playing in the dirt. Later, Firstman taught himself to play a few songs to please his mother. Luckily, I figured out the ivories pretty quickly, he said. He picked up the guitar while in college, and while he says hes not the best guitar player, I seem to make it work. Firstman (who has signed a co-publishing deal with BMG Songs) found his songwriting inspiration in singer-songwriters of the 60s and 70s such as the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne and others. I grew up in an era where there just wasnt that much good music. It all just seemed like noise, said Firstman. I would go to the record stores and ask the cool guys working there what they would suggest as the top five best records to buy, and they would tell me stuff like
Extractions: Consider this long and important introduction as a prelude to three fine examples of South African jazz. Much of this is from a phone interview with David Love, President of the Heads Up jazz recording company. At the same time this series is honoring the historic ten-year anniversary of the end of apartheid! There is much for our music loving readers to meditate about. Think about the many wonderful artists that were never recognized. What a terrible fate for artists in any of the many fields of the arts. David has been and is continuing to introduce the best of these long neglected jazz artists to the listening public. At this time it is neither logical nor affordable to have a separate CD for each performer. Therefore the compilation albums, or often called sampler recordings, seemed to be the best way to let the listening public hear these jazz artists for the first time. This past year's recent release Smooth Africa II was the logical successor to Smooth Africa I where David Love tried some new settings and paired some of the performers together. The resulting CD has been well received. Love decided to repeat the basic premise of

For about one-quarter of the century, he was a bandleader and active arranger for major recording studios, where he backed leading singers such as Ella Fitzgerald; Mel Torme, and Frank Sinatra. Sonny formed his band while in Duke University. John Hammond, the music critic, encouraged him to bring the band to NYC, where they wound up in Roseland ballroom. Sonny handled the Vibes and then began arranging for the band. Sonny inherited the Sam Donahue orchestra when Gene Krupa took Sam Donahue away, but when San Donahue left Krupa, he asked for his old band back. The orchestra took a vote and Sam got the band back. Sonny left the band and started a very successful career as west coast studio and TV arranger/conductor, as well as being chief arranger for such bands as Jimmy Dorsey and Charles Spivak.

Big Joe Turner Turner s longtime pianist, Pete Johnson (b. Kansas City, 1904; d. 1967) becameone of the established giants of boogie woogie piano in the 30 s and 40 s. http://www.hoyhoy.com/bigjoe.htm
Extractions: Big Joe Turner (b. Kansas City, 1911; d. 1985) started out as a blues shouter in the pre-microphone days, and sang the blues during seven decades (1920's to 1980's). He took a job in hometown Kansas City in 1929 as a bartender, and while he was mixing drinks, he'd sing whenever the spirit moved him, loud enough to accompany boogie woogie pianist Pete Johnson from across a crowded nightclub. The two played together all through the 30's and 40's, a style of boogie which was presented to the world in the famous " From Spirituals To Swing " concert at Carnegie Hall in NYC, in 1938. This concert billed African-American music in all its various forms, from the spirituals of the slavery years, to swing, which was just becoming popular. Big Joe and Pete played at that concert, which was the Woodstock of the 1930's, because anybody who played it became a star. It was this concert that started the boogie woogie revival of the late 1930's. "Boss Of The Blues," Turner was the chief inspiration for Wynonie Harris and the "rocking blues" style of the mid-40's, but his own inspiration was Ethel Waters, "The only blues singer I truly adored." It should be remembered that Turner was mainly a blues singer, and his early boogie and rock and roll recordings were spread fairly thinly among his slower blues and ballads. Still, he is best remembered for doing the original version, in 1954, of "Shake, Rattle, and Roll," one of the first rock 'n' roll tunes to cross over into the mainstream. His greatest recordings were made in the mid-50's for Atlantic Records, these records are the cream of the crop of one of the all-time greatest singers of the blues. Big Joe Turner's recording career spanned from 1938 to 1983.
