Iwan Llewelyn Jones On this evidence, Mr llewelynjones is a pianist who gives great thought to his Wigmore Hall recital by the young Welsh pianist, iwan llewelyn-jones. http://www.iwanpiano.com/reviews.html
Extractions: Reviews Geoffrey Norris, Daily Telegraph, July 1987 In his London debut recital at the Wigmore Hall on Tuesday night, Iwan Llewelyn-Jones revealed a lively, imaginative, artistic temperament which lent itself naturally to the Romantic repertory. Aside from a Mozart sonata, his programme was drawn from the period spanning Chopin and Ravel, with Scriabin and Franck in between (and with Debussy's "La fille aux cheveux de lin" played as an encore, in a thoroughly captivating way that touched in the music's sense of wistful languor and caught its quiet, unassuming expressiveness ideally). On this evidence, Mr Llewelyn-Jones is a pianist who gives great thought to his interpretations, He is able to take his technique for granted (or so it seems), and he builds from this firm basis readings of wide and sensitive scope which never lose sight of the particular idiom of the music or seek to impose on it anything extraneous. Thus, his playing of Ravel's "Le tombeau de Couperin" had a crystal clarity, a classical simplicity in which each note was carefully articulated and found its place in a well-reasoned, nicely shaped and characterful performance. In Franck's "Chorale, Prelude and Fugue", too, his playing had breadth and power and succeeded in bringing to the contrapuntal arguments (which can often sound routine) a flair and a sense of instinctively realised keyboard colour which reinforced both the music's strength and its detailed effect.

Extractions: The renowned pianist, Iwan Llewelyn-Jones, who works in London but is originally from Amlwch, Anglesey, Gwynedd, recorded his new album at Nimbus Studios at Monmouth. This was the first CD recording on a Stuart outside Australia. Welsh College of Music and Drama bought the piano back in May this year following a visit to Australia by the college's Chairman of Governors, Sir David Rowe-Beddoe. It was the first export sale of a Stuart and Sons piano, and the College was able to secure support for its purchase from the Government of New South Wales. Iwan Llewelyn-Jones is a professional pianist and studied at Balliol College, Oxford and the Royal College of Music where he won the Chopin Prize, the Hopkinson Gold Medal, and the Instrumental Duo Prize. Success followed in many major international competitions in Britain, France, Italy and Spain, whilst continuing his studies with Noretta Conci and Cécile Ousset.
Extractions: John Pickard is a man committed to looking at the great scheme of things, posting bad reviews as well as good on his website. His latest composition, a Presteigne Festival commission, is a one-star piece only in the sense that, astronomically speaking, its subject is Orion the most splendid constellation. The three-movement work for trumpet and organ is partly programmatic: Nebula presents disparate strands, their gradual coalescence creating rising tension out of which a dramatic trumpet statement emblazons the air. In Alnitak, a short hunting scene for the mythological Orion is framed by lyrical sections, which Pickard shrewdly sets for flugelhorn, giving a richly burnished sound in the context of St Andrew's Church. Betelgeuse (part of Orion's belt) depicts that star's eventual fate "dispersal into the depths of space" with paroxyms of virtuoso trumpet reaching a climax but, in response to fading chord clusters in the organ, then becoming more and more faint. Having soloist Alison Balsom remove to the Chapel for these dying moments risked being stagey, especially since organist Jonathan Scott was in full view, but luckily it created a spatial effect which made a musical point. Orion did not match the impact of Pickard's song cycle The Borders of Sleep, sung the previous day by baritone Damian Thantrey with pianist Iwan Llewelyn-Jones. The cycle, a setting of nine poems by Edward Thomas deals with death, its dark and often raw emotion vividly expressed and most senstively realised here.

Extractions: A Starlit Dome was composed in 1995 in response to a commission from the Criccieth Festival in association with the Arts Council of Wales. It was written for the pianist Iwan Llewelyn-Jones, who gave the first performances and to whom it is dedicated. In 1997, shortly after its London premiere, I revised the end of the work. When one looks through a telescope at the Great Nebula in Orion, for example, the image is at first faint and unclear (hardly surprising, as it lies some 1600 light years away). It seems little more than a patch of grey mist in the night sky, silent and apparently quite still. But the longer one looks, the more detail emerges: a greenish tint to the mist and a recognisable structure, which, after a few observations, can easily be drawn from memory. At the centre of the nebula lies a trapezium of bright new stars. It is by their light that the nebula appears to glow. In fact the whole thing is a whirling mass of gas and dust, gradually coalescing into new stars and perhaps new planetary systems.
