" Without his support, I can hardly imagine how I would have survived the two rounds of taped auditions and the live audition afterwards. He encouraged me. Thats the most important thing. He also taught me some relaxation and arm strength techniques that helped me overcome the physical difficulties." Han says that he will use these techniques for the rest of his life. " Its such a pleasure to work with a student who is both talented and highly motivated," says Takács. "Mudi has had to work very hard to regain the time and the mobility he lost due to his accident, so winning this competition is even more of an achievement. He also has become a very skilled Mozart player, which is not a very easy thing for a young performer to do. I really look forward to his concert in Ann Arbor." Born in Wuhan, China, he began his piano studies at age 5 with the chair of the piano department of Wuhan Conservatory of Music. Later, while a middle-school student, he frequently traveled to Shanghai and Beijing to study with top conservatory professors there. He also studied with Zhaoyi Dan in Shenzhen, the teacher of Yundi Li, winner of the International Frederic Chopin Piano Competition.

Li Yundi, the 20-year-old musical prodigy, made the remarks plainly to Xinhua in the music room of the five-star Peninsular Hotel in Kowloon, when he gave a media interview to a selected group of reporters. Li was asked how he would respond to remarks from a renowned Hong Kong pianist, who recently commented that Li's success might have contributed substantially to the increasing number of young people taking the dive in the art of piano playing on the Chinese mainland, ever since Li won the 14th Chopin International Competition in 2000.

Extractions: Died December 5, 1791 in Vienna Probably the finest pianist of his time, Mozart exerted, both by his playing and through his compositions, a tremendous influence on the later technique of the keyboard. He insisted that it was a mistake to play too fast, although his digital dexterity was remarkable, and emphasized always a clean execution and a delicately controlled touch. To play Mozart well is perhaps the greatest test of a pianist, for his music mercilessly exposes any slipshod methods and genially refuses to succumb to the mannerisms of mere "personality." Among the twenty-seven Mozart piano sonatas, the Sonata in C major, K. 330 is one of the best-known and loved and is considered by many musicologists to be one of the finest. A good example of Mozart's early works, this light-hearted sonata consists of three movements, fast-slow-fast, in the style of the early classical sonatas. Throughout the piece a thematic statement is heard, reiterated in a slightly modified, yet fully recognizable form. A contrasting theme is then introduced, followed by the return of the familiar theme. This recurring pattern gives the sonata the classical sense of balance and unity. The first movement

Extractions: Main Stairway This is actually a long overdue post. I watched Li Yundi's interview on CNN TalkAsia sometime last month. Pretty much the first thing that struck me was that he bore a fleeting resemblance on TV to Takuya Kimura. Then of course what he said was even more interesting, "I feel that Chopin is of the East, not of the West" (what?!). Also his interesting allusion to Chopin being 18/19 on composing his first piano concerto (i.e. the one we now know as Piano Concerto No. 2) - Li Yundi was 17/18 I think on being the first winner of the International Chopin Competition in 15 years. Amazing. Past winners I like have been Martha Argerich and Krystian Zimerman (again I think). But, other than those views, the rest were pretty usual interview stuff, like inspiration from mentor, which Chopin pianist he most admires (Rubinstein which keeps popping up don't know why), and which other composers he wants to play (we have Liszt, Bach, Beethoven ... okay, not exactly my favourites). He almost, and I emphasise almost, said that Hanover (where he's currently based) is boring. But yeah the rest of the interview was a little boring, must say. Which leaves one with no more fruit for thought other than to go to HMV and grab a listen to an album. There is a

Chinese Piano in Tune with Chinese Style The piano, which was still a novelty to most Chinese people half a century ago, has struck a chord with millions of families and become a new fashion symbol much sought after by both young and old. "You can always hear splendid music in China as long as you open your ears," said French maestro Michel Bourdoncle, "Even some young children can play the piano well." Indeed, music is frequently heard in China, from big cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou to the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and further on to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The popularity of the piano, whose presence in China goes back just 80 years, was first triggered by the enthusiasm of Chinese parents in encouraging their children to have a pastime in the 1980s. They spent heavily in those years, when a piano cost years of the average salary. But those pioneering parents helped nurture a large pool of musical talent, among whom was China's first international gold medallist Li Yundi. Li was only 18 when he won the gold medal at the 14th Frederic Chopin International Piano Competition in 2000, the first Chinese national to have that honor, but by no means the only one.
