Extractions: April 18, 2005 Program to be announced Is it possible to speak of an authentic artistic personality in the case of a pianist who is only recently turned 22? Not really, one would think. The years a young musician needs to establish an unmistakable profile have at that stage only begun. With Yundi Li, however, this notion seems not to apply. At 22 he is already a pianist capable of deciphering the message of a work and conveying it to his audience in a completely original and convincing interpretation. Yundi Li made his US debut at Carnegie Hall in June 2003 as part of Steinway's 150th anniversary gala concert. In July 2003, he made his American concerto debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra performing Chopin Piano Concerto No. 1 in a performance remarkable for its subtlety, sensitivity and mature artistry. That summer he was honored at a special reception at the home of the Ambassador of China in Washington, DC, where he performed Liszt for US State Department officials and guests, including former Secretary of State Alexander Haig. During this period he also gave recitals at Paris, Verbier, Salzburg, and Hong Kong, and appeared with NHK Symphony in Tokyo and Osaka.

Luke Ma [blog.lukema.net] yundi li, of course, plays it with majestic grace, rendering the piece pianist at an average music school and ask, Ever heard of this li yundi fellow? http://blog.lukema.net/archives/000368.html
Extractions: February 21, 2004 I already raved about the Yundi Li - Liszt CD a while back. Go out and get it now. I'll wait. In any case, here is a snippet from that CD. It's Liszt's transcription of one of Schumann's (Robert) Liebeslied (love song), Widmung . I think it's one of Liszt's better transcriptions. It's not too over the top dramatic but has enough distinctive flair and drama to be worthy of being a separate piece from its inspiration. In short, it's stupendous schmaltzy Liszt, despite the fact that the tune isn't Liszt. Yundi Li, of course, plays it with majestic grace, rendering the piece exciting both emotionally and academically. What a rare talent... Anyway, a little bit of music can evoke what an infinite number of words can't so here it is: Yundi Li - Libeslied.mp3 [5MB mp3 file] If anybody is interested (and don't know it), I can send you Yundi Li's playing of the Liszt B Minor Sonata, which is, well, I can't describe it with words. It's not a piece limited by some sort of emotional response (like "happy" or "sad"). It's raw emotion, but yet elegant and refined. It's that good. Despite all this, it's a piece that is hard to fall in love with right away. It takes, usually a couple of hearings to really get into it. But once you do, my god, almost nothing is more fulfilling...
Luke Ma [blog.lukema.net] yundi li is the child prodigy who is like a mature master pianist in a child sbody (they re both younger than me!). I think that li may very well become http://blog.lukema.net/archives/000248.html
Extractions: I have been listening to Yundi Li's (or Li3Yun2Di2 for Chinese people) Liszt CD for a while now. Included in this all-Liszt recital is the Sonata in b minor, La Campanella, Liszt's Transcription of Schumann's Liebslied: Widmung, the oh-so-cheesy Liebstraum No. 3, Tarantella, and a transcription from Rigoletto. Li's rendition of the b minor is without a doubt one of the best I've ever heard, and could rapidly become my personal favorite. The emotional depth of the b minor is balanced out quite evenly by the other show pieces such as La Campanella. Besides the technical achievements of such a program (no small task), Li also excels at elegance. This elegance is perhaps most evident ,ironically, in La Campanella. There is real thinking here. I have never heard La Campanella played so convincingly in both an academic sense and a visceral sense. Structurally, all the B sections transform, one after another, from elegant, to assertive, to a torrent of explosive sound, giving the piece a kind of coherence which I've never heard. Li's dynamic and expressive range, while we're at it, may be his most impressive skill. In every piece, especially the b minor, he uses his full range to spectacular effect. Never a dull moment.

Two years later and already filled with the ambition of becoming a professional pianist, he studied under Dan Zhao Yi, one of Chinas most renowned piano teachers.
