Extractions: by David Salvage Whenever I mention Maurice Ohana s name to fellow composers or musicians, I learn they either havent heard any of his music or havent heard of him altogether. The utter lack of attention paid to this great French master in the United States must rank as one of the more significant scandals in contemporary music, and a retrospective of his work here is long, long overdue. In the meantime, Naives recently released 2-CD set of Ohanas choral music (#782171) offers a good opportunity to get to know this overlooked (and absolutely first-rate) composer. Ohanas cultural roots are as complex as his music is eclectic. Born in French Morocco to parents of Spanish/English decent, Ohana remained a British citizen until 1976 despite living in France for most of his life. In 1932 he left for Paris to study architecture but soon abandoned his studies to pursue a career as a pianist. While studying at the Schola Cantorum, he began to turn his attention to composition, and, after service in the British army during World War II, he turned to writing music full-time. In 1947 he founded a composers circle called the Groupe Zodiac which foreswore all aesthetic dogma. Even though the group had dissolved by the early 1950s, Ohanas adversity to aesthetic programs and agendas left him on the margins of French musical culture for the rest of his life. (In France, to not be affiliated with Boulez and IRCAM is to go against the grain of the establishment.)

Extractions: L ee Hyla, the American composer who lives now in Boston is as brilliant as he is unknown outside new music circles. At the age of fifty, he is going strong, utterly captivated with music and with his work as a composer and yet, it must also be noted, not yet the recipient of the resounding recognition as a truly great composer on the world scene that he deserves. Hyla is somewhat of an enigma in that he doesn't fall neatly into any category or school of the modern/new music movement and seems not to really need to do so. He lives in the eclectic American music landscape that encapulates everything from pure classical forms to punk rock and what sounds likebut isn'tfree form jazz. Extractions: University of Iowa News Release Jan. 19, 2005 Katherine Eberle Will Perform Dramatic Cantata 'Eleanor Roosevelt' Feb. 6 One of the legendary figures of American history will be recalled in a performance of Libby Larsen's dramatic cantata "Eleanor Roosevelt," part of a faculty recital program that will be presented by mezzo-soprano Katherine Eberle at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6 in Clapp Recital Hall on the University of Iowa campus. The performance will be free and open to the public. For the cantata performance, Eberle will be accompanied by cellist Anthony Arnone from the UI School of Music faculty, clarinetist Heather Bynum and a vocal ensemble of UI music students. The performance will be conducted by Timothy Stalter, the UI director of choral activities. For the remainder of the program, Eberle will be accompanied by pianist Alan Huckleberry. Together they will perform Larsen's song cycle "Love after 1950" and three songs by Elinor Remick Warren: "When you walk through Woods," "By a Fireside" and "God be in my Heart." "For years I have been researching women composers and have been a fan of the music of Libby Larsen," Eberle said. "When I found these two major works for mezzo soprano composed by Ms. Larsen, I felt compelled to add them to my repertoire. Since Alan Huckleberry is especially gifted in performing American music, it was only natural to want to perform these pieces with him at the piano.

Extractions: ASCAP/IAJE Commissioned Works Honors Marian McPartland in Toronto ASCAP member Marian McPartland, the innovative and prolific jazz pianist/composer and award-winning host of Piano Jazz, the NPR radio program which is celebrating its 25th year, was feted at this year's IAJE (International Association of Jazz Educators) conference in Toronto. McPartland was a featured artist in a concert and was interviewed by Tim Owens during a session of the conference. In addition, two new jazz works composed in celebration of McPartland's birthday and commissioned by the annual ASCAP/IAJE Commissions program, were premiered at the conference. The commissionees are Robin Eubanks in the Established Composer category and John Hollenbeck in the Emerging Composer category. McPartland was present for the premiere of both works in her honor: Full Circle (Eubanks) and Folkmoot (Hollenbeck). The ASCAP/IAJE commissions program, now in its sixth year, has previously honored Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Carter, the Duke Ellington Centennial, the Louis Armstrong Centennial and Dr. Billy Taylor, respectively. 2003 Guggenheim Fellowship Awards Results of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation's seventy-ninth annual United States and Canadian competition have been announced. Chancellorville Houghton Mifflin Company, 1996 Drawing upon news sources and personal accounts by soldiers on both sides, Stephen Sears has written about one of the most dramatic battles of the Civil War, and the event historians consider to be Robert E. Lee's military masterpiecetaking Chancellorville. Lee violated a cardinal rule of military strategy by dividing his small army, sending Stonewall Jackson on his famous 12-mile march around the Union flank, destroying one entire corps of the Union army, while Lee drove the rest across the Rappahannock River. Jackson was killed by friendly fire eight days later, and the triumph of the Chancellorville assault led Lee to launch an aggressive campaign resulting in his greatest defeat at Gettysburg. An influential alto saxophonist, a brilliant arranger for big bands, and a key figure in the integration of the Hollywood soundtrack studios, Carter has also made a quiet yet persistent mark as a tunesmith. Extractions: Three of the area's top young jazz pianists will compete this weekend for scholarships and a club performance date. This first annual competition for students age 16-18 is sponsored by the Dakota Foundation for Jazz Education (J-Train) and The Schubert Club. Established to reward excellence among students of America's great indigenous art form, three scholarships, totaling $1500, will include the David Paulus Memorial Scholarship, the Marie Froelich Memorial Scholarship, and the Dakota Foundation Scholarship. A selected finalist will also be invited to perform at The Dakota Jazz Club and at a Schubert Club Courtroom Concert later in the year. The Three Finalists Jacob Siegel , 16, of East View High School, Apple Valley, is new to Minnesota, arriving this year from Maine, where he studied with Tony Boffa. He plays in Eastview's Jazz Ensemble I under the direction of Bill Henry. For the competition, Jacob will perform Miles Davis E.S.P.; John Coltranes Naima; and Chick Coreas Armando's Rhumba.
