Since then he has progressed from one triumphant appearance to the next. In 2001 alone he made his sold-out Carnegie Hall debut, travelled to Beijing with the Philadelphia Orchestra on a tour celebrating its 100th anniversary, during which he performed to an audience of 8,000 at the Great Hall of the People, and made a wildly acclaimed BBC Proms d¨¦but. During the 2004¨C05 season, Lang Lang will be heard with orchestras including the Vienna Philharmonic, Staatskapelle Berlin, Munich Philharmonic, Orchestre National de Lyon, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and Philadelphia Orchestra. Extractions: Born in Shenyang, China, Lang Lang (pronounced like Lohng Lohng ), started taking piano lessons when he was just two years old. At fifteen, he moved to America to attend the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Today he has a #2 album on the Billboard music charts, recently recorded a song for Joan of Arcadia , and is in the middle of a worldwide concert tour. He took time out of his busy schedule to talk to IML about growing up in China, his favorite sport, and why classical music is worth a listen. IML: First things first: What does Lang Lang mean in Chinese? Lang Lang: Shenyang is the fifth largest city in China, so its very cultured. Our family lived in a two-room apartment in a big building with lots of musicians and actors. It was a very lovely place to live because every family had an instrument and every child studied music. My father played the ehru, which is kind of like a two-stringed violin. But my favorite thing about Shenyang is the food. My favorite dishes are the big dumplings my mom makes and cabbage, which is kind of like sauerkraut, mixed with meat and seafood. I get so hungry just thinking about it! IML: What did you and your friends do for fun back then?

Extractions: At age 20, Lang Lang is in the first stages of a high-powered career. Three years ago Daniel Barenboim celebrated the 50th anniversary of his professional debut as a 7-year-old pianist in Buenos Aires, Argentina. But the close rapport between the current and former young piano phenoms was obvious throughout their recording sessions in Chicago in February. Huddled over the keyboard to work out a problem, Barenboim's arm around Lang Lang's shoulder, their respect for each other was obvious. Barenboim didn't so much correct Lang Lang as simply offer bits of expertise gleaned from more than 50 years at the keyboard. Lang Lang nodded with the immediate comprehension of someone confident of his own technical and intellectual resources. Barenboim doesn't have students per se, but after meeting Lang Lang after the young pianist's New York Philhar-monic debut last fall, Baren-boim agreed to coach him for their upcoming recording. Lang Lang traveled to Vienna and Chicago for approximately 20 hours of work with Barenboim, focusing on the Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn concertos. Given Lang Lang's exuberant personality and Barenboim's fondness for jokes and teasing when he's relaxed, they developed into a convivial pair. During a break in the final recording session, they listened intently to a playback of the Mendelssohn. Barenboim teased Lang Lang about his trademark swaying and ecstatic heaven-gazing.
Extractions: It is good that Julian Anderson, as the LPOs Composer in Focus, is getting the attention he deserves: a disc of his music has been recorded by the BBCSO under Oliver Knussen, to be released on Ondine, and the current London exposure can do him no harm. On this occasion we heard The Crazed Moon Stations of the Sun was played last November and Khorovod will be performed by the LPO on June 12 th Anderson was due to give a pre-concert talk, in conjunction with Anthony Burton. An ear infection meant he could not fly back to London from the US in time, however (presumably he was stuck on a boat, somewhere in the mid-Atlantic), so it was up to Burton and the pianist Huw Watkins, a pupil of Andersons, to provide the requisite background for the uninitiated. The decision to include performances of three of Andersons piano pieces as an aural starter to the orchestral main course was a good one. Watkins gave eminently musical accounts of Etude No. 2 (a study in monody with Eastern European inflections), Etude No. 4 (entitled, Misreading Rameau) and
Extractions: When it was first released, I gave Lang Lang s debut disc (Telarc CD-80524) a positive review that highlighted the more sensitive side of this young pianists persona. His Wigmore debut was an eagerly awaited event (the place was packed out) and was recorded by www.andante.com : it largely confirmed the impressions given by that disc and certainly gave much pleasure and delight. In an interview with Marc Bridle, Lang Lang stated that he had heard the Wigmore Hall was one with great acoustics. He was cautioned not to over-project, counsel he wisely heeded (at least most of the time). There were a couple of instances in an otherwise delightful account of Haydns Sonata in E, Hob. HVI:31

This was the annual Gala Benefit concert, a night of charitable fundraising when the generally relaxed atmosphere of the park is permeated by donors dressed to the nines, fresh from a black tie dinner, and the Pavillon stage features a slew of headliners. That year featured, among others, pianist Leon Fleischer and mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade. It had been announced that the pianist Andre Watts was ill, and the young Lang Lang (he happened to be in town for an audition that day) would be filling in, with the first movement of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1.
