N° LMC 133 Review by Rating Claude nederlands Review Its amazing and also very pity that a group like Artension has escaped from our attention, because this is really a super group with top notch musicians, just read their biography (and accompanying discography) on their site. Kuprij had especially attracted my attention for his co-work on the project Ring of Fire from Mark Boals, maybe the promotion of the record label for the group could have been better in the past, but hopefully this will change in the near future with the release of the seventh album Future World. The group Artension has risen from the cooperation between Ukrain Kuprij and Swiss Staffelbacher, both studying at a music school in Switzerland. Especially Vitalij has always been a musical genius, he was really a master in classical music at young age. Mike Varney has searched for musicians like singer John West (Royal Hunt), drummer Mike Terrana and bass player Kevin Chown to complete a new symphonic metal band. The question is naturally how you could describe their music, anyway the basis is a neo-classical symphonic (speed) metal with progressive roots, also based on classical music. Add to this multiple references to Uriah Heep because of the choruses and you will have a good idea of what this music is all about. It is obvious that song composition was well thought of, unless many other band in the same vein.

This is a five piece super project that has been around for nine years and its release number seven for them. The band is headed by keyboard God Vitalij Kuprij and he could go head to head with Jen Johannson. Also in the camp is vocalist extraordinaire John West (Royal Hunt), Roger Staffelbach wows us all on his guitar work, Mike Terrana (Yngwie, Rage, Axel Rudi Pell) on drums and a newcomer who needs no intro, Steve DiGiorgio. What sucks most about this band is that they have never toured once under this moniker and its a damn shame because this is the finest music you will hear on plastic. With all that said, lets jump into the songs. Overall, I love the music. Each member plays tightly on their own and as a cohesive unit. The solos from Vitalij and Roger and grade A. Its just the vocals that dont measure up here. I hope the band releases another record next year and John can redeem himself. I would say that this record is for completists only like me and those who just love prog metal.

The band is lead by the virtuoso keyboard player Vitalij Kuprij, which gives the music a weird an unusual drive and is really a seldom configuration for a metal band. Indeed, the Ukrainian is the prominent figure, his melodies and solos soar above the rhythm section. This doesn't mean that the other band members are mere second choices: the singer displays a clear and mighty voice, with a broad range, reminiscent of Jeff Scott Soto and Graham Bonnet. The guitar on this album is rather a background instrument and its main function seems to be to add a metal depth and dimension to the sound. Extractions: Slam MTM Records 2001 A huge step back. After 2000's powerful "Holy Man" , new Turner 's work looks lame. Trying to squeeze it out before joining forces with Glenn Hughes was a mistake. Album done by the same team, the difference's shocking. Opening "Bloodsucker" comes fragmented due to its rawness, as if Joe recorded his vocals over a demo rather than proper backing track, even Akira Kajiyama's guitar and Paul Morris' organ solos feel like sketches. Early spell's difficult to cure, so "Cover Up" and "Hard Times" might be RAINBOW out-takes and "Dark Days" the "Death Alley Driver" rip-off. A real hero here is bassist Eric Czar, his groove pouring a life into laid-back "Posession" and helping Joe out with "Show Yourself". Good advice, latter, and a good song: embryonic rocker slowed down to rhythm-and-blues to gain a weight near the end. Yes, currently Turner wins on bluesy turf of "Eye For An Eye" and in "Deliver Me" he goes further into that soulful ground and then balladeering he's always been impressive at. "Heart Of The Night" is cut off the same cloth as "Love Conquers All" and equally heart-wrecking. In any case, the impact's stronger than that of the title track, jazzy yet tuneless and pseudo-experimental. OK, it may be better than "Stormbringer" riff re-used for "Evil", dull to the bone. Still, lest not forget Turner's not so young now yet he always leaves a hope for a change, this time as well, in wonderful "Always Tomorrow". Let it be so, though goods would be more preferrable today.
