Extractions: Vitalij Kuprij - 3 (2000) Artension are the band that in my opinion have stolen Dream Theater's crown as Kings of Progressive Metal and are not far away from Symphony X as the Gods of this genre. The multi national and talented line-up of John West (Vocals), Vitalij Kuprij (keyboards), Roger Staffelbach (guitars), John Onder (bass) and Shane Gaalaas (Drums) are all at the top of their fields and this shows throughout the recording. However, not only are the members masters of their instruments, they are also damn fine songwriters. While Dream Theater seem intent in either going all commercial or starking bonkers with confusing concept albums, Artension have simply stuck to what they know well and get on with doing it even better. Which is not to say this is simple a case of more of the same, oh no, it takes the highly progressive feel of their debut, and mixes it with the solid songwriting and production of the excellent 'Forces Of Nature' album and all in all this is another worthy addition to the prog bands belts.

Quite a bold statement to open this review but this is album is so good I will defy anyone to argue otherwise. Based around the vocal talents of John West, Ukraine Keyboardist extrordinaire Vitalij Kuprij and Swiss guitar wonderkid Roger Staffelbach, Artension are a match for any of the genre big guns. They blend the perfect mix of Symphony X, Dream Theater and even some Rising Force influences into a package that is fresh and unique. Intense riffing collides head on with odd time signatures, wailing solo trade offs, superb vocals and melodies that are to die for are the name of the game here. 1. THE FORCES OF NATURE [6.29]

PROGRESSIVEWORLD.NET: REVIEWS BY MARCEL HASTER Ferrigno, Leal, kuprij Promised Land Released 2003 Label Lion Music Cat. No . Javier Leal - guitars (right channel) vitalij kuprij - keyboards http://www.progressiveworld.net/ferrignolealkuprij.html
Extractions: Reviewed by: Marcel Haster , May 2003 Vitalij Kuprij was born in the Ukraine and has an impressive career in classical music, as he studied the piano and won numerous prizes with his performances. But, besides his composing and piano playing, this multi talented performer has another side that is of interest. Vitalij Kuprij and his friend and guitar player Roger Staffelbach founded the neo-classical progressive rock/metal band Artension, and released five albums with this band, as well as three solo albums. Although classical music is his main focus, he still has time for rock orientated projects. For Promised Land , Vitalij formed an interesting line up with Philip Boyce (Ring of Fire, ex-Steve Vai, Genius - A Rock Opera) on bass and Jon Doman on drums. But the most interesting is the fact that Kuprij teamed up with no less than two guitarists in an unusual set up: Marco Ferrigno plays guitar on the left channel and Javier Leal plays guitar on the right channel! This creates a very peculiar effect, which can be enjoyed best if you listen to the album with headphones. It is no surprise that Promised Land is a very guitar oriented album, but there is a lot of room for keyboards and despite the very technical play of Ferrigno and Leal, Kuprij brings in many classical elements with his play. The guitar and keyboard parts intertwine throughout the album and in turn they have their solos. The album is entirely instrumental and I think that is the main reason why the music is a bit too technical. The two guitars and the keys, all three demand the lead in the songs, although they have a solid backing by the drums and bass. The song "Eternal" is a moment of rest (in the album) as this begins with a church organ sound, followed by a bit more laid back keyboards and less guitar than most of the songs. The final track on the album, "The Prohecy," has an epic sound to it, with a bit of a classical melody in the keys and in the second half of the song, a heavier guitar riff.
PROGRESSIVEWORLD.NET: REVIEWS BY STEPHANIE SOLLOW vitalij kuprij s keys are mostly very sharp and cold piercing runs, very shrill . Musicians John West - vocals vitalij kuprij - piano and keyboards http://www.progressiveworld.net/artension3.html
Extractions: Reviewed by: Stephanie Sollow, August 1999 Artension are, in some respects, a more typical metal band. There is a hint of Dream Theater here, but really any prog metal band that has come down the pike since say, 1991, is going to be compared to DT, whether the comparision is apt or not. Even I've fallen into that trap, as a shorthand to give a clue to a band's sound. But really, DT isn't really apt, except from a stylistic perspective. Really, they are a harder edged Kansas...a shriller Kansas. There are occasional classical influences...most apparant towards the end of "The Truth," with guitarist Roger Staffelbach guitar solo. Vitalij Kuprij's keys are mostly very sharp and cold - piercing runs, very shrill. When he plays piano, there is a total change - warmth, pleasant without sounding weak. The examples for both extremes are the title track and "Tall Ships," respectively. In fact, this latter may be my favourite track on the disk. He plays keys well, but the tone would sound better with less shreek. Track six, "Shape Shifter" is sludgy and plodding compared to the rest of the album, though it begins with atmospherics and what sound like strings...James Murphy (Testament) plays guest intro guitar solo on this track. This may be their most Dream Theater-like moment; however, in trying for dark and mysterious, it comes across as...well, sludgy. Actually...comes across as Soundgarden, really. Sludgy Soundgarden.

Extractions: On May 1999 I've recorded a sort of demo, on CD, to testify my change of ideas; it was called "Seven Magic Arts". It was only for me... but it wasnt what I really wanted to hear, so in September I recorded my new CDdemo "Mind Boggling". Ive sent it to a lot of guitar magazines, I was reviewed on Guitar Nine On Line Magazine on Internet, in fact I had been chosen as one of the undiscovered artist for December 1999 and January 2000 on their web site and I've know a lot of great players and nice email-friends as Rusty Cooley and Tony Smotherman. After this, my CDdemo has been requested to be reviewed by a lot of web magazines. Meanwhile my musical ideas had changed and when these reviews were released I had recorded a new CDdemo, called "Suspension", and the last demo, "Mind Boggling", was too old now. "Suspension" , recorded at the beginning of January 2000, contained 3 songs that are included in my full album with the same name, but with more arrangements. Ive never had a band where I used to play my music (instrumental shred and prog), because Ive never found musicians with my same ideas, so I usually program a drum machine and, it is, in my opinion, the best way to solve this problem also because it helped me to appreciate, in an instrumental work, drums at the same level than guitar or keyboards. In June 2000 I was also reviewed by a lot of guitar magazines as Chops From Hell, Whiplash , Guitar Mania, Insane Guitar, Shredders, The Shred Zone, HHGI Guitar Magazine, Guitar Heroes, Guitar 9, Used CD Shop and a lot paper magazines. During July 2001 finally I've released my first instrumental album called

Extractions: Review The audience was excited by his [Philips] excellent playing Without doubt, the audience was bubbling with joy. The band played the high speed song Ring Of Fire which was on Marks solo album to finish their 110 minute show. At the show the day before, there were an impression of all great musicians but the band lacked unity as a whole because of the keyboard trouble and the bad sound. They were fired up for their last show and balanced the books. But it will be more effective if they make their show more tight although I think its not a problem to have each members solo time because each members technique is the selling point of this band. Also, its dull to be honest when the band plays mid-tempo epics which The Oracle mostly makes up from. From that point, I think they may need to write rhythmic and catchy songs such as Death Row and Bringer Of Pain from the solo albums which they played for Ring Of Fire. In any case, its rare that such talents gather in one band. By all means I hope that theyll get their act get off the ground not only in Japan and come back to our place again.
