BY LLOYD SCHWARTZ As opposed to the high-powered duo of Evgeny Kissin and James Levine in mid April, it was only half of the most recent Bank of America Celebrity Series chamber-music team who filled Symphony Hall: superstar violinist and late-night raconteur Itzhak Perlman, returning for his 14th Celebrity Series appearance. His excellent partner, Sri Lankan pianist Rohan De Silva, is not a famous soloist but a specialist in "collaborative arts" in other words, an accompanist and one who works with many of the best-known violinists. The problem with celebrity chamber recitals is that the accompanist takes a back seat to the star, even when theyre both playing parts of equal weight. It didnt look promising that the lid on De Silvas piano was almost closed ("short-sticked") for Mozarts Sonata in E minor K.304, which the score calls, as Steven Ledbetters program note pointed out, a work for keyboard "with the accompaniment of a violin," and for Beethovens Kreutzer Sonata, one of the most intricately collaborative works in the chamber-music repertoire.

Stephen Kovacevich, world-renowned Beethoven interpreter. Yoel Levi is Music Director Emeritus of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra for whom he built an enviable reputation. He conducts throughout Europe, Canada and the US, including the New York Philharmonic. He made his NZ debut in 2001 to fine reviews. The sorcery of Mussorgsky's famous Night on Bare Mountain, which was written to celebrate the witches Sabbath, can only be surpassed by the immense, unforgettable score of Shostakovich's Eleventh Symphony, which depicts "Bloody Sunday" - that shameful day of 9 January 1905, when the Tsar's troops fired at will upon unarmed demonstrators in Palace Square, St. Petersburg. Both works complement the high spirited, fast-moving Mendelssohn Piano Concerto. This concert will be performed on Friday, 2 July at the Auckland Town Hall. Diedre Irons was born in Winnipeg, Canada. She made her first solo appearance with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra at the age of 12. After graduating from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, she taught there and toured extensively in Canada and the United States. She moved to New Zealand in 1977 and has since become a vital part of the New Zealand music scene, performing with the NZSO, Auckland Philharmonia and the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.

Stephen Kovacevich hat einen Exklusivvertrag mit EMI Classics und spielt zur Zeit den gesamten Zyklus der Klaviersonaten von Beethoven ein. Seine Aufnahme der Sonaten op. 31 wurde von Robert Layton so kommentiert: "... wenn das so weitergeht, wird der Kovacevich-Zyklus einen ähnlichen Referenzcharakter erreichen wie die Aufnahmen von Schnabel in der Glanzzeit der 78er Schallplatte oder die von Kempff in den frühen Jahren der LP." Extractions: University of Iowa Peter Boyer won the 1997 FIRST MUSIC national composers competition, for which his prize is a commission to compose an orchestral work to be premiered in Carnegie Hall by the New York Youth Symphony on 5/17/98.
