Extractions: FRANCK Sonata; PROKOFIEV Sonata No. 2 Grigory Sokolov I was, as so often before, given to wonder again why half this great and versatile pianist's recital was given over to Bach on a Steinway, or to Bach re-invented? He did not seem to have anything special or coherent to say in this music. It was romantic, with build-ups of crescendi, as if an organist was using (anachronistically) a swell box; the audience seemed to have loved it, which must be the main thing. I should have been more sympathetic and interested if Sokolov had opted for historic Bach arrangements, perhaps some of Busoni's or Siloti's; an area explored so fruitfully explored by Angela Hewitt.

Rachmaninov: The Piano Concertos to Earl Wild, to zoltan kocsis, to Argerich, Rubinstein, Richter, Rodriguez, Stephen Hough is a pianist of immense finesse, who is incapable of http://www.hyperion-records.co.uk/details/67501.asp
Extractions: Ever since we started working with Stephen in 1996 recording these concertos has been on the agenda: its probably been the project closest to his heart. But it took several years before we found the orchestra and conductor that we felt would do justice to this important project. The combination of Dallas and Litton offers a conductor who adores Rachmaninov (he has recorded all the symphonies) and understands the works from a pianists perspective, an orchestra with a glorious and old-fashioned string sound of the kind with which the composer would be familiar, a hall to record in which is one of the best in the world, and lets not forget Stephen Hough who has already won two Gramophone Record of the Year accolades for his concerto recordings. As the results here triumphantly show, all our hopes have been fulfilled, and more. Apart from the Paganini Rhapsody, recorded after a concert performance, these are essentially live recordings. Over a period of eighteen days eleven concerts were given, with each concerto being played several times. From these we have pieced together an ideal performance free of coughs, noises and the few musical mishaps which occurred, but still capturing the excitement of what was, by common consent, a sensational series of concerts.

The NMS members were not prosecuted as political instigators, however, thanks to the fact that the works they performed had no explicit texts whatsoever.

Gulda's forays into jazz spilt over just a little into his classical playing, meaning that there is a certain unbridled assertiveness that, in the case of the three last sonatas (a highlight of this set), will bring you to the edge of your seat. The earlier performances tend to be crisp, sprightly and rather formal, polished playing that is also warmly conscientious, the work of a man who both loves and respects the music but who also senses its divine madness. r.cowan@ independent.co.uk

Extractions: Suddenly the doorbell rang. An elderly and rather agitated woman stood in the doorway. Dispensing almost entirely with the niceties of polite conversation, she made it clear that there was to be no more rattling of the ivories, because she wanted to have her afternoon nap in peace. I managed to calm her down, not without difficulty, and she duly left. When I went back in to where Richter was, he asked immediately: Sto? Sto?" (We communicated in the curious mixture of Russian and German he seemed to find most comfortable). Nyevazmozhno igraty", I answered. What then took place seems unbelievable even now. Richter began swearing loudly and flung his spectacles onto the floor (my mother, who was also there, still has a piece of the frame), where of course they smashed to smithereens (Bruno kept finding bits of glass for months afterwards). Then he ran out. By the time we had recovered from the shock of this, he had disappeared. Which was all very well, but we had to rehearse; we were not yet ready for our performance. I thought I would find him in his hotel that eveninghe always stayed at the George V, the best hotel in Parisbut evening came and he was still nowhere to be found. By then, of course, it was not only me who was looking for him; his agent, his doctor and a considerable crowd of admirers were all concerned as to his whereabouts. At the reception they said he hadn't been seen since the night before. We were at a loss. What could we possibly do? Added to that, the Metro had shut down and there were no longer any buses running, so it was about 3 a.m. before I managed to get home. The following day, about midday, the telephone rang. It was the Maestro in person. He said we really must rehearse that afternoon; and that I really must go and see the show at the Moulin Rouge if I possibly could. He hadn't had such a good time in ages.
Extractions: has become associated with the music of the Second Viennese School through a succession of recordings, chief amongst them the angst-ridden Erwartung and a highly regarded (by some) Wozzeck . The Romantic excesses of Mahler also seem to suit his temperament. And if there is one piece that exemplifies this late-Romantic energy, it is Mahlers first symphony. Quite an achievement, then, for pianist Alban Bergs Passacaglia Wozzeck , prefiguring passages following Maries murder, and is characteristically Bergian: immediately after the first statement of the theme, the texture becomes chromatically saturated. It is true that it lacks the finish of the approved works of Bergs canon (some brass imitative passages are contrived), but it nevertheless is a fascinating part of the jigsaw of this elusive composer and his output. tutti . It was the brass which rescued the day, with a fine peroration (horns standing as they blared out the final statements) which certainly met with the audiences approval.
Extractions: Zoltan Kocsis has always gone his own way. His forceful musicality and faith exclude all possibility of compromise. His aim at perfectionism elicits respect in his environment. His boldness and revolutionary spirit stem from his belief that the basic requirement of performing art is the continuous endeavour of sounding the works in the spirit of the composer.
