Extractions: THE 2ND EDITION OF THE CLASSICAL FESTIVAL STARTS TONIGHT WITH MONCTON SINGS HÄNDEL (Moncton, NB) March 18, 2004 - The second edition of the Classical Festival starts tonight at the Capitol Theatre with the presentation of Moncton sings Händel, a unique local production featuring almost 80 local musicians and singers, including pianist Roger Lord as well as soloists Aurélie Cormier and Dion Mazerolle. Also on stage tonight as part of this exceptional performance, a 14-piece brass ensemble and 18 violins. The highlight of this performance will be the unique interpretation of Georg Friedrich Händels Dettinger Te Deum, a masterpiece for alto, tenor, bass solo, choir and orchestra. Dettinger Te Deum was composed to celebrate the victory of British and Austrian armies over the French on June 27, 1743, at Dettinger in Germany. This performance by Acadian musicians and singers more than two and a half centuries after the battle has an ironic twist. The failure of the French forces at Dettinger led to the decline of the Nouvelle France and contributed to the Acadian deportation. Tomorrow, world renowned pianist Ludmila Knezkova-Hussey will present a magical evening of classical music. Brilliant, dynamic and extraordinary are some of the words used to describe the performance of Ludmila Knezkova-Hussey. Her unique musical talent was recognized at an early age. At age six she entered the Special Music School in Lvov, Ukraine and she studied there for eleven years. She then continued her studies in piano at the prestigious Music College of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory (Russia). Following her studies in Moscow, Ludmila moved to Czechoslovakia where she won first prize in the Czechoslovakian National Piano Competition and later won the Smetana International Piano Competition.

Extractions: Renowned pianist and composer LUDMILA KNEZKOVA-HUSSEY has travelled the globe to perform with some of the greatest orchestras of all time. She has been showered with countless awards and accolades. Yet it is here, in New Brunswick, that she has achieved perhaps the greatest success of her career. In 1993 the Ludmila Knezkova-Hussey International Piano Competition was established in Bathurst, her newly-adopted hometown. For one week every second year musicians and judges from around the world flock to this northern city. This competition is a precious gift, renewing the creative spirit of local musicians and giving the community an economic boost. In return, New Brunswick has provided Knezkova-Hussey with the inspiration for some of her original compositions. Traversées, an opera based on the history of the Acadian people, premiered during last year's 400th anniversary of the founding of Acadie. The libretto is by none other than the Lieutenant-Governor himself, Herménégilde Chiasson.
