SERGEI KOPTCHAK, the bass from the Slovak Republic who made his Met debut as Boris Godunov in 1983, appeared on PBS on December 27 in the televised Met production of "Don Giovanni" in which he sings the role of the vengeful Commendatore. In The New York Times review of the opera, which opened the Met season in September, music critic Bernard Holland wrote that "Sergei Koptchak (was) a deeply eloquent Commendatore." Mr. Koptchak, who comes from the town of Dacov in Slovakia's Rusyn/Ukrainian region, readily acknowledges his Ukrainian ancestry. Canadian-born TANNIS KOWALCHUK and the company of the new "Arca Nova" production were delighted to receive rave reviews from The Village Voice and The River Reporter in the Catskills. Produced in October by NaCl (North American Cultural Laboratory), an experimental theater company founded in 1997 by Ms. Kowalchuk and her husband, director Brad Krumholz, "Arca Nova" is the company's most ambitious performance project to date, incorporating acrobatics, stilt-walking, dance, chanting and surreal costuming as it explores the text of "The Book of Genesis." Now boasting a new office in Brooklyn, NaCl is preparing an original performance for young audiences and children, "Beware!" which will premiere on February 11 at the Brooklyn Art Exchange's Groundhog Festival.

Extractions: Encyclopedia harpsichord, stringed musical instrument played from a keyboard. Its strings, two or more to a note, are plucked by quills or jacks. The harpsichord originated in the 14th cent. and by the 16th cent. Venice was the center of its manufacture. At that time its prevailing shape was winglike, similar to that of a grand piano. The square harpsichord, often called spinet , became more common in the late 16th cent., when harpsichord making in the northern countries surpassed that of Italy. Perhaps the greatest craftsmen were the Ruckers family of Antwerp (late 16thâ17th cent). Varying the touch in harpsichord playing does not alter the quality or volume of tone; to provide dynamic variety, octave couplers and various stops that change the tone were introduced. Contrast in volume and in tone color is made easier by the addition of a second keyboard, or manual, found on German harpsichords from the late 16th cent. and on Italian ones from c.1665. The instrument provided the basic support of virtually all the various combinations of instruments as chamber music and orchestral forms developed. In the 19th cent. the harpsichord, which required frequent tuning and replacement of quills, was superseded in general use by the piano. Since the mid-20th cent. however, the older instrument has had a revival in popularity.

Variations on the Orange Cycle The millennium brings us to a renewed awareness of time, since this unique moment is simultaneously an end and a beginning. The light of the sun represents the continuation of life - and the hope for a better life - against the fears, superstitions, prophecies of doom related to the millennium. The symphony is an expression of both sets of elements, in two types of musical gestures that appear throughout the movements. According to a correspondence between the frequency of each pure color of the spectrum and its musical equivalent, there are seven short movements, with ascending tonalities.

Extractions: There are no greater pleasures in the song repertoire than shared recitals of these 46 miniature masterpieces, which seem to bring out the best from lieder singers and their pianists. Reviewing the first in the series, Adrian Jack, writing in The Independent, was glad that the two singers disappeared when not singing, instead of being expected to "sit about onstage, pretending to appreciate their colleague". No such problems with Dame Felicity Lott and Olaf Bär, who stood together and sang alternately from memory to their sold-out audience, with only one break for the interval. (John Steane, in the March Gramophone , wonders "what has happened" to Bär, a 'brand leader' 10 years ago; the answer is, he lives in Dresden and is singing very well, if not so often here!). Both these favourites were in excellent voice, in accord with their pianist, and did indeed appreciate and strike sparks of affection and gentle rivalry from each other, covering the gamut of emotions from amorous hyperbole to petulant derision of unfaithful and inadequate lovers. In depth exposure to Hugo Wolf's songs, many of them infrequently heard, promises to be a rewarding experience and this 2003 centenary a welcome opportunity for a timely celebration.

Having begun his collegiate study at the Eastman School of Music, he earned his bachelors degree from the Oberlin College Conservatory and his masters degree from the University of Wisconsin.
