She presented a paper titled ââWhy Not?â: Negotiating Old and New World Culture through Basque American Songâ at the National Society of Ethnomusicology conference. J. Anthony Allen (Ph.D. candidate, composition) was awarded several honors in the past year, including the Susan and Ford Schumann Award (Aspen Music Festival, 2004); University of Minnesota College of Liberal Arts Technology Fellowship (2004); ASCAP Standard Award (2004); SCI/ASCAP Student Commission Prize (finalist, 2004). Several of Allenâs works were performed throughout the country including the SCI National Student Conference, Electronic Music Midwest Festival, International Computer Music Conference and the Spark Festival of Electronic Music and Art. Extractions: December graduates listed GREEN BAY - Trumpeter Melton Mustafa will perform on several of his own compositions with the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Jazz Ensemble at the University's 30th Jazz Fest set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan 15. The UW-Green Bay Vocal Jazz Ensemble and an outstanding high school jazz ensemble also are on the program set for the Weidner Center on the campus at 2420 Nicolet Drive. Tickets are $12 at the door or $10 if purchased in advance through the Weidner Center box office, 465-2217 or 1-800-328-8587. Mustafa's performing experience includes eight years with the Count Basie Orchestra and stints with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, the Charlie Mingus Epitaph Orchestra, Gunther Schuller, the Woody Herman Orchestra, and others. In the early '80s, he performed in the Fats Waller musical, "Ain't Misbehavin'." The guest artist is a composer, arranger, band leader, and teacher, in addition to being a renowned performer on the trumpet. Mustafa's contributions to the Count Basie Orchestra include several compositions. His own Melton Mustafa Orchestra, inaugurated in 1989, has two compact discs, "Boiling Point," and "St. Louis Blues." Mustafa continues as an active composer and arranger, and serves as director of jazz studies at Florida Memorial College, and as director of instrumental music at the African-American Cultural Arts Center, both in Miami.
